Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Friday, 9 March 2012 23:00 (fourteen years ago)

Bono is one of the world’s worst war criminals and I support the international effort to arrest him.

buzza, Friday, 9 March 2012 23:04 (fourteen years ago)

Festival au Desert! I would love to go to that thing, but I would be so very cheesed off if Bono took the stage for fifteen minutes of bellowing.

Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Friday, 9 March 2012 23:05 (fourteen years ago)

LEAVE BONO ALONE

tylerw, Friday, 9 March 2012 23:17 (fourteen years ago)

haha that's really the thing though isn't it...he honestly thinks it's a "special treat" for the people like they should be SO PSYCHED BONO SHOWED UP to fuck around onstage with an actual good band

why did you guys encourage me to watch this it is horrible h8 u all

unlistenable in philly (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 9 March 2012 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah totally. From what I can tell of the audience it's 80% Malians who might well have no idea who U2 are (is this a false assumption?) and 20% tourists who certainly didn't travel all that way to watch Bono ruin Tinariwen's set. xp

Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Friday, 9 March 2012 23:29 (fourteen years ago)

yeah man if you were like a mega african music fan that traveled for that god i'd be soooo pissed off

Having said that, this is some of Robert Plant's set at that same festival a few years back and I think it really works...

Robert Plant is really into this stuff though I would guess & knows a good deal about it

unlistenable in philly (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 9 March 2012 23:39 (fourteen years ago)

what's he doing at 13:00 where he yells, throws his hands up then does a weird hand move, then keeps repeating this?

JacobSanders, Friday, 9 March 2012 23:40 (fourteen years ago)

plant has been proven to be way cooler and have way cooler taste than bono a million times over though, i could dig seeing him

a little tiny crunk person (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 9 March 2012 23:40 (fourteen years ago)

now that i think about it, it's kinda surprising and awesome that plant has kinda evolved into one of the coolest and dignified and most comfortable in his own skin down-ass brother type classic rock icons...which, given his zep image and persona, wouldn't have seemed like it would be the case

a little tiny crunk person (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 9 March 2012 23:41 (fourteen years ago)

saw Plant at a festival last year and was startled by how good his set was

Chris S, Friday, 9 March 2012 23:42 (fourteen years ago)

My uncle sat next to Robert Plant on a flight once a few years back and said he was a great guy. Talked about football the whole time cos they were both massive Wolves fans.

Plant's Austin City Limits performance is just fantastic

unlistenable in philly (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 9 March 2012 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

Been saying for years that Plant is THE guy when it comes to that generation of rock performers who actually want to keep exploring and doing different things old and new from around the whole damn world. Seriously an impressive figure.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 March 2012 23:55 (fourteen years ago)

In retrospect, this event seems completely inevitable. The right people should've been able to put protections in place to prevent this from transpiring. At some level our collective complacency is to blame.

Scott, it's 15 minutes long and it involves Bono. There is no way.

Yeah, I saw the length on this video and didn't even attempt it. It would bring nothing but misery.

important article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/oct/23/mali-militants-declare-war-music

coincidence, or the direct sociopolitical impact of the performance which began this thread?

An official decree banning all western music was issued on 22 August by a heavily bearded Islamist spokesman in the city of Gao. "We don't want the music of Satan. Qur'anic verses must take its place. Sharia demands it," the decree says.

...

This year in January, no doubt the last festival to be held in Timbuktu for a while occurred in an atmosphere of high alert after recent kidnappings and the murder of a German tourist by al-Qaida. The event was attended by Tinariwen, a host of other Touareg and Malian musicians and Bono.

one year passes...

for posterity's sake

The following poem was left by U2 frontman Bono in the King David Hotel's guest book in 2012:

In Jerusalem, hope springs eternal
Hope is like a faithful dog
sometimes she runs ahead of me to check the future,
to sniff it out and then I call to her:
Hope, Hope, come here, and she comes to me.
I pet her,
she eats out of my hand and
sometimes she stays behind,
near some other hope maybe to sniff out whatever was.
Then I call her my Despair.
I call out to her.
Here, my little Despair, come here and she comes and snuggles up,
and again I call her Hope.
