weird bill for Hurley to play on...

one dis leads to another (ian), Friday, 9 March 2012 17:07 (fourteen years ago)

I love every band on that list (my blind spot is White Fence), but I think I would agree that The Mantles are my favorite of all of 'em.
My other favorite amazing Mantles tune is "Raspberry Thighs." They're seriously due for another LP!

Walter Galt, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

the Mantles are on Spotify so I've got my afternoon-at-work listening lined up

White Fence is cool lo-fi psych, recommended if you like Sic Alps et al. I like the first self-titled record better than the second ("White Fence Is Growing Faith")

dmr, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

never picked up that mantles LP, cuz i wasn't convinced by the "burden" single from aught-seven (reverb-jangle burnout). "don't like" is fucking great!

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

lol "don't like"

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

but yeah, dig basically every band in that lineup, and several are among my very favorites CIA (ohsees! hurley! arrows!)

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

Out of all those bands Mantles are the least active and rarely tour so they are even more of a "get" IMO. White Fence albums are very nice, but their live show is a lot more aggressive (full band) and I dig it. If I was in Cali I would definitely go to this. Maybe Hurley is gonna do an album on Woodsist? Only thing missing is Some MV/EE or Matt Valentine solo action.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:25 (fourteen years ago)

man, they should really do a WC tour w that shit. this summer. daytime shows @ outdoor venues. would fly a kite.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:29 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe Hurley is gonna do an album on Woodsist?

In the press release it said something like "this year we invited some of our favorite bands to come hang out"

dmr, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:30 (fourteen years ago)

meaning Hurley and Pierced Arrows I think

dmr, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:31 (fourteen years ago)

They did it 2 summers ago, there were a series of "Woodsist Festival" shows in addition to the Big Sur fest. Saw Real Estate, Woods, Kurt Vile, Sun Araw, Mantles, Art Museums, Nodzzz and some Vivian Girls one-off at The Echo in LA. For selfish reasons I wish they would do a freaking New York Woodsist Fest again.

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

y'all should come down to Big Sur, esp. northwestern folks

sarahell, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

btw anyone going get campsites now it is a nightmare

haha when i pitched going to this to my bf this morning he was like 'is there camping' and then made a face

Lamp, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:40 (fourteen years ago)

i have family nearby -- so i'd either crash there, go for a charming cheapish motel, or just drive down and do only one of the days

sarahell, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:42 (fourteen years ago)

camping in big sur is kind of glamping any way you slice it imo <---- this could be wrong

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:43 (fourteen years ago)

what is glamping?

sarahell, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:43 (fourteen years ago)

ok this thread has convinced me to get tix for this

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:43 (fourteen years ago)

my family would camp in Big Sur for a weekend or so every summer when i was a kid. it was pretty much normal camping.

sarahell, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:44 (fourteen years ago)

glamour camping
yea it's pretty much normal camping, but with like burrito places down the road

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:46 (fourteen years ago)

there weren't any burrito places anywhere nearby when i was a kid! we had peanut butter & jelly sandwiches and campfire hotdogs and s'mores and stuff.

sarahell, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

lol at burrito places making something glamourous. especially when in big sur there are super fancy places to eat.

mizzell, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

i think there were bathrooms with running water, but that was about it for amenities

sarahell, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

mizzell, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:51 (fourteen years ago)

I've never been able to eat at the fancy places, anyway I'll see ya'll there

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

when you are camping, burritos are the height of decadent glamour. wet, hot and wearing pumps.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:56 (fourteen years ago)

^ referring to myself, oc

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:56 (fourteen years ago)

you wear pumps to go camping?

sarahell, Friday, 9 March 2012 19:01 (fourteen years ago)

glumping

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 9 March 2012 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

btw anyone going get campsites now it is a nightmare

do you have a rec. of which one to shoot for?

dmr, Friday, 9 March 2012 19:03 (fourteen years ago)

wait i thought the burrito was wearing pumps

mizzell, Friday, 9 March 2012 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park

mizzell, Friday, 9 March 2012 19:05 (fourteen years ago)

also recomend making a reservation for the public bath hours (1 am to 3 am only) at esalen institute

if you head up to big sur early or want to just try for it I would rec that you get a first come first serve site at andrew molera. This is prob the cheapest option and while the sites themselves are just like in an empty meadow its right next to a beach and close to the library.

Fernwood is pretty alright for a private campsite so I would hop on it if there aren't any state park options. Pfeiffer's incredible if you can get a spot in the redwoods, but this fills up super quick, may be some availability now. These three are all pretty close to the venue. Kirk creek is generally considered the best park to camp at of all of these but it's about 40 mins to an hour from the venue and not easy to get a site there. There are couple other public and private places that are cheap that I've never stayed at, but I know some of the other state ones are kind of inland and a bitch to get to.

I am prob not as well versed as a lot of other people here but that's what I got

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 9 March 2012 19:13 (fourteen years ago)

I AM THE BURRITO!

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Friday, 9 March 2012 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

uh, anyway, i have been listening to "don't lie" over and over again for quite a while. nice accidental (?) fringe benefit of lofi gleverb camping style is that it sounds boss through shitty computer speakers.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Friday, 9 March 2012 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

super helpful, thanks

if I'm able to swing it I'd probably be getting in fairly last-minute so I think I'd need something I can reserve in advance

dmr, Friday, 9 March 2012 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

then I would say Pfeiffer #1 and Fernwood or whatever other private site around there (there are a couple right next to it) #2

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 9 March 2012 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

wish I could go to this

fuck deathcore and metalcore (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 9 March 2012 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

Pfeiffer is already booked up through October if I was filling out the online rez thing right

dmr, Friday, 9 March 2012 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

flopson, Saturday, 10 March 2012 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

personal & the pizzas are like only the fifth best pizza punk band

flopson, Saturday, 10 March 2012 20:20 (fourteen years ago)

i was disappointed that when i saw them they didn't do very many songs about pizza, like they might have done one.
