and what, Friday, 9 January 2009 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

speaking of manes, did Maino's album ever come out? if, so was it good?

i loved hi hater and then after that i heard him on some mixtape song kicking some conscious political anti-government shit and i was o_O

ie: BANGING (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 9 January 2009 21:30 (seventeen years ago)

nah, Maino is one of those deluded guys who thinks their one hit is just setting the stage for something bigger, so he dropped another single w/ Trey Songz and is waiting patiently for his Neveruary release date. the title If Tomorrow Comes... could take on some lol Greatest Story Never Told-type connotations if he's still on the shelf in 2010.

some dude, Friday, 9 January 2009 21:35 (seventeen years ago)

lol @ trey songz

lol @ "Neveruary"

Et tu, Crut? (The Reverend), Friday, 9 January 2009 21:42 (seventeen years ago)

seriously what is up with release dates and rap?

i mean some stuff will get pushed back in like rock or whatever but usually it seems to be more on some artist side stuff, where i get the sense there are albums totally in the can that just sit there for years.

ie: BANGING (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 9 January 2009 21:44 (seventeen years ago)

yeah...in rock (and even pop) labels still just put out a single, drop the album a few weeks later, and hope for the best. in rap and R&B, basically since at least '04 or so, the single has to get x number of BDS spins before they'll even put the album on the schedule, and pretty much until the day the CDs start being pressed nothing is certain. rap's been in kind of a fear-based vicious cycle like that for years, with first-week sales scrutiny and the concept of "mixtape buzz" feeding into that system and making it more deeply entrenched.

^^^you kids have probably discussed this upthread, but if not: why the fuck is Fiddy rhyming over an Alkaholiks instrumental?

The boy with the Arab money (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Friday, 9 January 2009 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

Matt, seriously, hunt down the original version of Hi Hater ('money dollar dollar bill y'all') and tell me if you just love the hook or you like him; apologies if you already have done this.

I never cared much for gorilla zoe, but I think I like this?

I'm always a sucker for depressed rap songs.

lyrics sound like high school yearbook poetry tho.

@stickman

suits that slurred delivery?

He did a mixtape with whookid last year all over old funk and disco tunes, so not such a surprise to hear him over basically the "seven minutes of funk" break.

subroc back to haunt, Friday, 9 January 2009 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

i mean it's just some mixtape type "freestyle" thing, right?

I never cared much for gorilla zoe, but I think I like this?

that gorilla zoe mixtape had a surprising number of great tracks on it - i can pretty much jam it start-to-finish. he's got a knack for a good hook.

that busta track is HOTT.

in rap and R&B, basically since at least '04 or so, the single has to get x number of BDS spins before they'll even put the album on the schedule, and pretty much until the day the CDs start being pressed nothing is certain.

do u see this changing any time soon?

lex pretend, Saturday, 10 January 2009 11:23 (seventeen years ago)

fuck i was just headbanging to that busta shit

some dude, Saturday, 10 January 2009 14:31 (seventeen years ago)

it started changing a little when labels like Def Jam realized they could just dump an album with no buzz into the marketplace with very little promotion, watch it flop, and blame it on the artist (Freeway, LL Cool J, etc.). but with really new artists and anything that stands to make a profit yeah I think labels will keep fearfully holding things back thinking that the right song to launch it is always just around the corner. for a while it seemed like Koch having big hits could change the climate but now Koch is working more like the majors than vice versa.

some dude, Saturday, 10 January 2009 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

so pharrell has been listening to dubstep...

aggy new year (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Saturday, 10 January 2009 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

is that the title of a thread from 2003?

some dude, Saturday, 10 January 2009 18:29 (seventeen years ago)

upon first impression i found it to be kind of unlistenable

aggy new year (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Saturday, 10 January 2009 18:55 (seventeen years ago)

pharrell doing a weird nu-wayne impression is some epic fail shit, but worth it for how crestfallen it must make the clipse feel.

i kinda knew RB was going forward w/ "drop" considering how much radio's been playing it. i just don't understand -- wtf is the voice in the sample saying? it's so annoying.

some dude, Sunday, 11 January 2009 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

"I wanna be on you"!? Ne-Yo on some Ron Burgundy shit

some dude, Sunday, 11 January 2009 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, "Embedding disabled by request" is one of those classic jams I find myself checking out on almost a daily basis

some dude, Sunday, 11 January 2009 22:11 (seventeen years ago)

major labels disabling embedding is some of the funniest shit in its misguidedness
