Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

From I can gather from what Niel's been sayin is that the NYArchvie boxes will contain EVERYTHING he ever recorded.

So you know the difference. Some of it is good, some of it is crap that wasn't released-there's a reason. Take a look, see what it is. That's what a fuckin' archive is about, not "Here's Neil Young in all his wonderfulness-the great, phenomenal fucking wonderfulness." That's not what I want.

I want people to know how fuckin' terrible I was. How scared I was and how great I was. The real picture-that's what I'm looking for. Not a product. And I think that's what the die-hard fans want - the whole fuckin' thing." -Neil Young

Grazia Ed!

J, Friday, 16 March 2007 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

okay, to answer some questions:
- my guy at the studio says yes, Massey Hall and Fillmore are going to be included on the box set. He also sez: "wow yer in for a treat, espesh the ealy 60s guitar inst. serf stuff ya think I kid, but no."
- As for Neil and Rick James in the Mynah Birds

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks for the updates. I'm kinda pissed now that I just shelled out for Fillmore and Massey tho.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 16 March 2007 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

this will probably be one of the only boxed sets I've ever shelled out money for (the other one being BACK TO MONO)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

this will be the first box set i've ever bought. i'm dreading finding out how much this'll cost.

modestmickey, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

shakey, would you mind inquiring about journey through the past, album or film or both? no worries if you've pressed yr luck, don't want to turn this thread into a flood of q's for you. I'm just way curious about that.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

haha - no worries, he's a close friend/bandmate/neighbor and we will be getting drunk and karaoke'ing later today as a matter of fact. I'll ask

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

scraping together a few amazon.com gift certificates and getting in on the pre-order price will probably take the edge off this one.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

wow, thanks man.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

this will be the first box set i've ever bought. i'm dreading finding out how much this'll cost.

don't worry I'll hook you up with an illegal download just like you like

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

Back to Mono goes for like $15 these days

sexyDancer, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

timely

modestmickey, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

This sounds fantastic. Just hope I don't have to sell a pint or two of blood to afford it.

leavethecapital, Friday, 16 March 2007 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

thx for all the info shakey...i couldn't get the link on the mynah birds response to work...

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 16 March 2007 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

its supposed to be a link to the iTunes store entry for the Motown Box Set, which contains a few Mynah Birds singles. I think it comes up if you search for "Mynah Birds" in iTunes.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

(btw I have not listened to them yet meself)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

so just to backpedal a bit, does anyone else think it's kinda lame that the Fillmore and Massey Hall shows are apparently going to be included in the big box set? i mean, most hardcore Neil fans (who this archives box is almost certainly aimed at) are going to have already bought the single disc editions on the day they came out--even though the nerds (like, uh, me) already have them on bootleg! So if I get the 8 cd/2 dvd set later this year, I'll have three versions of the same show? I guess I'd rather just have a six disc/2 dvd set, if it'd be cheaper. anyway...

tylerw, Monday, 19 March 2007 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

EBAY

Edward III, Monday, 19 March 2007 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

more updates: Journey Through the Past is not gonna be included in the box set, either in music or film form. The DVDs are primarily home videos and unreleased live footage, young Neil driving his gear around in a hearse, etc. Stuff that was made for official release (like Human Highway or Rust Never Sleeps or Journey Through the Past) are not in there.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 19 March 2007 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

that's kind of lame

akm, Monday, 19 March 2007 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

was it confirmed that massey hall and fillmore are on this? Iwouldn't assume they are and have seen nothing to indicate taht they are

akm, Monday, 19 March 2007 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

I think Neil said something like there would be spaces for them in the box design at least

sexyDancer, Monday, 19 March 2007 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

I'm hoping there's a lot of mis-information floating around this thread because, to be perfectly honest, the more I'm reading the less I actually care about ever seeing these things. Releases I've already paid for? Home movies? Come on Neil.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 19 March 2007 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

thanks shakey

NEIL WHY U BRAEK HEART ALL TIME

Edward III, Monday, 19 March 2007 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

i would love to have a good copy of that 1974 bottom line show, but it's probably not up to neil's audio standards. er, and i guess it would go on massive box vol.2.

scott seward, Monday, 19 March 2007 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

vol 3. is gonna rule with 9 discs of NY classics done in "Trans" fashion

Edward III, Monday, 19 March 2007 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

hmm, yeah that 74 Bottom Line show is probably the best Neil Young bootleg ever (which is saying something). It ought to have been included as a bonus disc with the On The Beach reissue. But it's an audience recording (I think), so it probably won't be officially released. Still, I'm glad it exists in any form. That opening "Pushed It Over The Edge/Citizen Kane Jr. Blues" is up there with his finest never-released tunes. Wonder if there's a studio version of that song in the archives...I've heard the sort of wonky CSNY live rendition. Good, but not as good as the song deserves.

Anyhoo, don't mean to be ungrateful or anything. Regardless of what's on these Archive box sets and what's not ME LOVE NEIL YOUNG.

tylerw, Monday, 19 March 2007 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

News from Billboard:

"Massey Hall" and last fall's "Live at the Fillmore East" will be included in the box as bonus discs. The remainder of the chronological collection features material cut with Young's early Canadian band the Squires, recordings from the period during which he lived in Topanga Canyon, Calif., scores of previously unreleased studio tracks and a live disc drawn from a week's worth of concerts from the Toronto venue the Riverboat.

"This really is an audio biography, not a boxed set," enthuses Standish, who says three additional "Archives" boxes will follow. "The photos in the book are unbelievable. Those in and of themselves are incredible pieces of art."

The notoriously press-shy Young is expected to do some interviews in support of "Archives" but for now is not planning a tour around the release. "A lot of people don't realize how extensive and intense the Freedom of Speech tour he did with Crosby, Stills & Nash was," says Standish. "I think Neil is taking a little bit of a break at the moment. But you never know what's around the corner. If the muse moves him, anything can happen."

tylerw, Thursday, 22 March 2007 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

soooo, the Fillmore and Massey Hall shows are in addition to the 8 discs? Or what?
Also: "Notoriously press-shy?" I mean he doesn't give interviews every five minutes, but he's not exactly Dylanesque in this regard.

tylerw, Thursday, 22 March 2007 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

can anybody help me obtain the 74 Bottom Line show?

QuantumNoise, Thursday, 22 March 2007 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

btw,

if anyone were to email me at m@tt@[email protected]

there's a possibility you might end up receiving a yousendit link to the legendary "lost neil album" chrome dreams

When I read a story about this thing, I take whatever is said, especially if it's by Neil, and I add a "not" in front of it.

But I want to believe.

really been liking Early Daze, it's funny sometimes even a song I've heard a million times I suddenly get that feeling like damn Neil you didn't have to drop bars that hard on em

Blue, blue windows behind the stars,
Yellow moon on the rise,
Big birds flying across the sky,
Throwing shadows on our eyes.

They probably won't include it, but back in '16, when Fathom Events did a satellite to theatres double-feature of Human Highway and Rust Never Sleeps, they had between the films a special live audience of fans thing with Neil & Cameron Crowe. After a brief interview about the films, they took audience questions, one of the last of which was this older woman who started talking about how much Neil's songs and outspokenness about addiction meant to her because all of her children were addicts (IIRC, one had just died), and she asked about solutions/coping, to which Neil offered very sage advice about to not blame yourself and that, after a point, only the addict themselves can make the decision to stop.

It was so shocking, because up to that point the show had been so fanservicey (Crowe introduced Neil as "The man who got us to buy Ponos so we could own Time Fades Away again!"), and then suddenly everything <GOT REAL>

The important thing is that Archives III had been blocked from non-NYA streaming in favor of a sampler (shades of some of the bigger Dylan Bootleg boxes).

I read a couple posts on the Hoffman forums which were not entirely pleased with the new mix on Mirror Ball , but more that were thinking it sounded pretty good. Since I’m not nitpicky, I’m not too concerned. Going to try to pick that box up this weekend since I’ve been waiting for these to show up for years. Though apparently harvest moon is the same cut as the RSD release from a few years ago.
