+ Speaking about "Permanant Vacation" mix (which is great, but then I love anything in which the first adjective involved in describing it is "pretty" - see love for any Ewan Pearson set as well), Vahid, you have to check out Permanant Vaction's Kathy Diamond 12" "All Woman" (produced by Fulton) which is the first single of her coming album "Miss Diamond To You" (which hopefully includes "Sunshine" and other Fulton productions).

Jedmond (Jedmond), Thursday, 16 November 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I definitely get a Ewan Pearson vibe off of Permanent Vacation (the first half of his Resident Advisor set is like a proggier version of the same). The Joakim remix also is absolutely stunning.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 17 November 2006 01:57 (nineteen years ago)

the alice smith remix is not as craaaaazy as we've come to expect but is still great.

the realness of Colonel Sanders (H2-H4), Friday, 17 November 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

only halfway thru but the resident advisor mix is inspired and interesting and kinda scary.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 20 November 2006 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

For the love of god HOW DO I PRONOUNCE LADYVIPB

Telephone thing, Friday, 3 August 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

hehe, I say Lady VIP B, easy to say I guess hehe

gigabytepicnic, Friday, 3 August 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

This is of course a purely academic question, as no one I talk to (with my mouth) knows what the hell a "ladyvipb" is, but dammit, enquiring minds want to know.

Telephone thing, Friday, 3 August 2007 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe it's an anagram.

Syclops record? new MU record??

Dominique, Saturday, 17 November 2007 03:04 (eighteen years ago)

Reasonably late response, but there are some quotes from Fulton regarding Ladyvipb here http://www.allbusiness.com/retail-trade/miscellaneous-retail-retail-stores-not/4645368-1.html On the other hand I swear I read him saying somewhere that Ladyvipb stood for Lady V.I.P. Bitch aka ex-girlfriend.

Nice to here that there'll be some new Syclops soon.

syclops record "i've got my eye on you" out in april ... looks like it's got some of the tirk singles on it, "where's jasons k", no "monkeypuss", and other new tracks ...

deej - "that barbra streisand re-edit is a must own!!"

were you referring to the RA podcast or is this a maurice fulton edit?

Crackle Box, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

listened to syclops "the fly" the other day, still gives me the chills when that pad synth sound comes in, turns this slightly grating, gimmicky track into something else entirely.

Crackle Box, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

picked up 'stress why put me through it' for cheap yesterday. recognised 'my gigalo' (2manydjs no?). surprised this hasn't had a mention on ilm. no love?

Crackle Box, Friday, 29 February 2008 11:44 (eighteen years ago)

i've posted a bunch about it but i can't find my old posts on it.

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 29 February 2008 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

I was looking for that thread, when this one got revived. What was it called? Maybe not a specific Fulton thread?

I have Stress, the second Mu album, Where's Jason K, the I:Cube, Rapture, Hot Chip and !!! remixes (and I only just found out that he produced that !!! album) and the RA mix, as well as some of those Bubbletease Communications things. Oh, and Kathy Diamond All Woman and Alice Smith Love Endeavour.

I LOVE all these things - but especially the last two. I saw him DJ at that Lovebox weekender thing last summer and it was great. It all sounded like the Alice Smith remix. Gospel piano house-type stuff. It was amazing.

Erm, so what else do I need?

been listening to the stress record a bit lately, it is fantastic. i need to hunt down all the singles from it - chicken lips did a pretty mental dub of 'my gigolo'!

still yet to see syclops record in the shops unfortunately.

haitch, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 02:38 (seventeen years ago)

would really like to hear that chicken lips version. i should listen to them more.

got syclops today. it's amazing. like he figured out how to accentuate every good part of all his old albums while simultaneously ditching the goofy aspects (flute solos, aimless ambient interludes, creeping un-tunefulness) that held albums like "boof: life is water for gerbadaisies when they're dancing" back.

really, really hard to believe that it's a band, though.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 06:43 (seventeen years ago)

he was pretty insistent upon it, even in person

jaime, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 06:48 (seventeen years ago)

i think syclops is not very good. it's like an untuneful IDM album. reminds me of Squarepusher's "Music is Rotted One Note". lots of cool sound effects with no substance. no songs. no melodies. the only 2 songs that are any good are The Fly (when those keys come in near the end is really nice) and Where's Jason K.

then again, i'm not a fulton fanboy. didn't really like the Mu album and thought the Kathy Diamond album was just ok. never heard anything else.

jaxon, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 06:57 (seventeen years ago)

if you think this is untuneful you should hear older fulton songs. it gets annoying at times. incredible production, amazing beats, but the synth squiggles are just all over the place.

maybe it's a concept thing. on a certain level it's not so different from ornette coleman's "free funk" albums, where dudes are just vamping all over the place with no regard for anything like a hook.

syclop at least has some hooks?

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 07:51 (seventeen years ago)

The Bubbletease podcasts are packed full of incredibly tuneful, melodic and hooky stuff, supposedly all Fulton originals (I've rarely noticed a sample at least). Most of that never sees a release, so I wonder if he just thinks the skronky, squiggly style is what the world wants from him?

jng, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 14:06 (seventeen years ago)

God, reading back through this thread has reminded me how badly I want an ID on that awesome fuzzy ambient techno track that comes before the Streisand edit on the RA podcast.

jng, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 14:10 (seventeen years ago)

on a certain level it's not so different from ornette coleman's "free funk" albums, where dudes are just vamping all over the place with no regard for anything like a hook.

haha. funny. i'm currently listening to a Jamaaladeen Tacuma album :D

jaxon, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

Definitely hear the Music is Rotted One Note, Jaxon, but in a good way, for me at least.

Great variety to the productions, more than I was expecting. Holds up to multiple listenings in a variety of contexts.

this guy is really such a great DJ

autogucci cru (deej), Monday, 15 June 2009 01:03 (sixteen years ago)

at least, when making mixes -- never seen him live. but the new BiS one is great, as was the RA

autogucci cru (deej), Monday, 15 June 2009 01:04 (sixteen years ago)

i saw him once live, it was wicked. not really as floaty as the RA mix or the bubbletease podcasts though, very high disco tempo to the whole thing. seemingly endless edit of that old philly soul classic 'only the strong survive' that just went on and on and on while he abused the EQ will live long in the memory!

Executive Producer Wolf Dick (haitch), Monday, 15 June 2009 01:32 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i saw him once and i drank waaay too much but his set was awesome! really fun house & disco. didn't realize he had done a mix for RA, must grab that now..

one time, Monday, 15 June 2009 01:49 (sixteen years ago)

he's one of the deejays i most want to see live that i haven't seen yet. his online mixes are all outstanding.

also for track reccomendations, i see no one has mentioned Cyclops' "Where's Jason's K?" which is insanity of the highest order.

It's been 0 days since I've discovered that Maurice's remix of My Heartbeat, by Annie (which I was searching for after 18 years listening to it!), is, in fact, an early version of Syclops' Mom, the Video Broke

oh this is v topical, I was just telling my friend abt Maurice Fulton a few weeks ago and have been slowly assembling him a playlist, and I rediscovered the Kathy Diamond album and JESUS CHRIST is it good!!! All the little snippet interludes give me big Gwen Guthrie "Padlock" (not to mention the music itself) vibes which I feel like had to be deliberate??
