Seeing 'em again tonight (first time through was opening for Depeche at Staples Center, tonight is the Detroit Bar -- a rather smaller affair).
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:23 (nineteen years ago)
...and that was a pretty good set, a bit static but the highs were highs. Also, nice job covering both Sonic Youth's "100%" and the Gun Club's "Sex Beat," I'd say!
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 8 June 2007 07:54 (nineteen years ago)
I loved Whip It On, but I never exactly fell in love with the second one. I really should check out the third one after reading this thread. Is there a new one on the way or something?
― I know, right?, Friday, 8 June 2007 10:35 (nineteen years ago)
a new album is TBA for this year, according to some upcoming releases lists.
― StanM, Friday, 8 June 2007 10:40 (nineteen years ago)
There's some new songs on their MySpace page. Going to see them tonight at the Echo.
― Elvis Telecom, Friday, 8 June 2007 14:38 (nineteen years ago)
Opening act Midnight Movies is pretty good too -- their set started as basic Velvet/Can worship (no complaints, but that's all it was) but as things went on they kept bringing all sorts of other stuff to bear, and ended on a fine high note.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 8 June 2007 14:46 (nineteen years ago)
Opening act Midnight Movies is pretty good too
Agreed. I've seen them a couple times before (including the Stereolab show you were at). New album is worthy
― Elvis Telecom, Friday, 8 June 2007 14:48 (nineteen years ago)
including the Stereolab show you were at
THAT'S how I know them. It was really bugging me last night!

New album is out this month! This Dead Sound song is good.
― I know, right?, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)
In other words, why was I not informed?
because they've got an indie budget now
― electricsound, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 20:59 (eighteen years ago)
They've been steadily posting about it on their MySpace page + playing some of the new songs at their shows this year.
Gut reaction: it's not hitting me as immediate as Pretty In Black did, but I'm liking it a lot.
― Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)
Really, I completely missed out on Pretty In Black after I was told it pretty much sucks ass. But I only ever loved Whip It On. Lust is filthy.
― I know, right?, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)
The opening track on this is pretty amazing.
― baaderonixx, Friday, 30 November 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)
This is really really good. First indie album I've heard in a long time that I've liked.
― Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 7 February 2008 06:45 (eighteen years ago)
They remind me a bit of Black Tambourine.
― Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 7 February 2008 06:52 (eighteen years ago)
this is somewhat of an appealing thing to me
― electricsound, Thursday, 7 February 2008 07:44 (eighteen years ago)
did calum start this thread?
― jabba hands, Thursday, 7 February 2008 08:14 (eighteen years ago)
The new disc -- Lust Lust Lust -- appeared on eMusic today. I'm very curious based on the review, which says it's better than 'Psychocandy'.
― Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 19 February 2008 15:12 (eighteen years ago)
^^ rong obv
― Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 15:18 (eighteen years ago)
Probably so, but the favorable comparison still speaks well of the disc. Others upthread seem to like it, too. Is it just a JAMC knockoff?
― Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 19 February 2008 15:30 (eighteen years ago)
goddamn, two days after i buy a copy and FP finally fucking get off their ass to put it on emusic. typical. anyway it's a very fun record, if not up to the standards of the last two
― electricsound, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 22:42 (eighteen years ago)
evidently i can't access it on emusic so no harm done
― electricsound, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 22:45 (eighteen years ago)
I am happy with the recent JAMC-type indie releases - Raveonettes, A Place To Bury Strangers, Magnetic Fields, etc. It's a very welcome return of sonic depth to iPod-quality indiepop.
― Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 22:45 (eighteen years ago)
Man that APTBS disc is good. The way a record oughta be.
― Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 19 February 2008 22:48 (eighteen years ago)
I'll probably be crucified for saying it, but Lust Lust Lust is exactly what I was hoping to get from the disappointing Magnetic Fields album.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 23:41 (eighteen years ago)
i haven't heard distortion but i'm sure that's entirely fair
― electricsound, Thursday, 21 February 2008 00:03 (eighteen years ago)
The Black Tamborine comment is very astute ... it has a strong Aislers Set feel to it. It sounds like it belongs on Slumberland, not Vice. Extremely strong album, but will it be remembered at the end of the year?
― zaxxon25, Thursday, 21 February 2008 00:42 (eighteen years ago)
It's getting only fair reviews (72 METASCORE on about 17 reviews), so chances are it won't be remembered in many Year-End Polls.
― Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 21 February 2008 00:48 (eighteen years ago)
i'm digging lust lust lust. plenty of fuzz on the guitars, but very pretty soundscapes nonetheless. nice, dreamy songs
― Charlie Howard, Thursday, 21 February 2008 07:52 (eighteen years ago)
Lust Lust Lust is great, I like it better than the previous records (which were good, but kinda samey very quickly).
Seems like there's more of a groove to the songs this time around.
― milo z, Sunday, 24 February 2008 22:25 (eighteen years ago)
i'll have to check this out
― The Brainwasher, Sunday, 24 February 2008 22:33 (eighteen years ago)
My favorite rock disc of the year, so far.
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 24 February 2008 22:37 (eighteen years ago)
Great!
― I know, right?, Sunday, 24 February 2008 22:39 (eighteen years ago)
Two follow-ups. First, the disc really does have a sonic imprint similar to Psychocandy, tho I'm by no means saying it's as good (some have, however, e.g., the eMusic review). I mention it because L3 is one of the more strongly nostalgic discs I've heard since the 80s revival began this decade, and so it touches certain nerves with me. Second, L3 is, to me, a nice companion piece to the growing indie noise rock sound I've been enjoying more and more over the past few years. I think of it and two other discs as three sides of the nu-Indie Noise Rock: L3 representing darkly romantic noise rock; A Place To Bury Strangers' self-titled debut last year representing angry, industrial-type noise rock; and TNV's new disc representing light-hearted, raucous noise rock. I'm sure I've missed a lot of other equally worthy noise rock discs, but there it is. Anyway, L3 is a very, very good disc.

Brilliant show tonight. Loved their cover of Stereolab's "French Disko" too.
― Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 08:36 (eighteen years ago)
I kinda regret being so drunk when I saw them, I can't remember much about the gig, and lots of people are saying they were great live!
― Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 11:24 (eighteen years ago)
Eh, this is okay. The way they use vocals to balance the mood/sound out strikes me as an improvement on JAMC, but some of these songs (and it's a relatively short album) aren't holding my attention.
― _Rockist__Scientist_, Sunday, 16 March 2008 22:13 (eighteen years ago)
Best album of the year, so far.
― stephen, Monday, 17 March 2008 00:41 (eighteen years ago)
Raveonettes cover I Wanna Be Adored. It's for some sort of silly Doc Martens anniversary comp, but the cover is great and worth the hassle to download.
― Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 29 August 2010 23:51 (fifteen years ago)

― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 29 August 2010 23:56 (fifteen years ago)
raveonettes are a sorely underappreciated band.

One of those 'where did the time go' PR mailouts:
THE RAVEONETTES CELEBRATE 10TH ANNIVERSARY
New album, Observator, out in the fall.
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:06 (thirteen years ago)
neat. their last album is probably my favourite since their proper debut
― relatively joan rivers (electricsound), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:56 (thirteen years ago)
i think Observator is a bit thin on proper songs, not to mention i like 'em better in full-on shoegaze mode, or full-on pop mode, than this moody, in-between land of minor key songs with fewer hooks and less guitar noise... opening track is a dagger, tho.
― ilxor, Monday, 17 September 2012 02:39 (thirteen years ago)
man i'm p in love with the new one!
opening track is one of their all time songs for sure
― the best Laid jams (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 17 September 2012 22:03 (thirteen years ago)
i don't think it's quite as good as raven, which was one of their best, but no disappointment certainly
― upset and upsetting (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 00:49 (thirteen years ago)
the lush-u-like guitars in sinking with the sun are glorious
― bansplain (electricsound), Friday, 19 October 2012 11:04 (thirteen years ago)
never heard these guys until observator. I can imagine younger me getting properly obsessed with this record if it were, like, 1986. As it stands it's fantastic alone-in-the-house stuff

insanely beautiful song from the newest album.

― a cheese has occurred (electricsound), Friday, 12 September 2014 05:46 (eleven years ago)
observator is amazing, it's true.... but so is lust lust lust. and so is pe-ahi. i feel like this band is underrated. burying lush melodies under mountains of fuzz and laying ehtereal, sometimes cryptic vocals on top of it all is seen as an easy, tried and true formula. i'm not sure it is though. the raveonettes aren't my bloody valentine, but still there aren't many other bands who do what they do as well.
― Hot Drexel Students (Treeship), Saturday, 13 September 2014 11:40 (eleven years ago)
Yeah, they're MBV + JAMC.
― Hakeem Olajuwon Howard (Leee), Sunday, 14 September 2014 00:53 (eleven years ago)

I was lukewarm on Observator, but their set at Austin Psych Fest last year was a big highlight and last night's show upped even that. I hadn't really given Pe-ahi a chance yet - but the new songs sound great live. I'll just go ahead and say it - they aren't MBV, but Curve 1993. Their sound is just that unstoppable. Do not miss.
― Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 25 September 2014 11:04 (eleven years ago)
so true
surprised there's never been a "best of"/introduction sort of comp but it would probably be a licensing nightmare
