― teledyldonix, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 22:00 (fourteen years ago)
i can't stop playing the closing track
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 29 February 2012 00:30 (fourteen years ago)
J0rdan if you haven't already you should definitely listen to the Blondes album.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 00:35 (fourteen years ago)
You crack me up ILM, you'll rep for dergy retro indie tech house like John and the Blondes then get all upity about anything that isn't poppy UK funky :')
I guess we're dealing with a forum still in the shadow of DFA, hey...
― jimitheexploder, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 00:38 (fourteen years ago)
yeah i have been, it doesn't play to my sensibilities as much as this does but i'm trying to find an in there cuz so many ppl like it
xp
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 29 February 2012 00:39 (fourteen years ago)
John and the Blondes is a much better name than the Blondes imo
no 'the'
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 29 February 2012 00:40 (fourteen years ago)
or just Blondes
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 29 February 2012 00:41 (fourteen years ago)
i have trouble a lot of the times really getting moved by dance music that doesn't overtly try and MOVE you (via a big beat drop, or some big build up or w/e) but one of the great things about this album is that very small changes in the beat feel very big and powerful
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 29 February 2012 00:45 (fourteen years ago)
Jimi I am not "ILM".
― Tim F, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 00:46 (fourteen years ago)
very small changes in the beat feel very big and powerful
this is basically how i got into dance music via minimal and electro house ca. 2006
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 29 February 2012 00:49 (fourteen years ago)
i didn't know j0rdan had favourote dance albums in general!
i got into dance music entirely through going out clubbing, not sure i would have if i hadn't
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 01:02 (fourteen years ago)
i mean like ~proper~ dance music not just the big boshing chart hits of the 90s
ha, from time to time
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 29 February 2012 01:05 (fourteen years ago)
"favourote"? fuck typos so much
i can't really think of a dance album from the past deacde or so you'll like more than ellen allien & apparat's orchestra of bubbles
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 01:11 (fourteen years ago)
Ay up Tim I know you aint ILM, you're Tim. I just see a lot of cross over from this thread and the Blondes.
John and the Blondes
And it makes my head scratch. Don't see where its coming from at all and I'm a sucka for old DFA, shity tech house and a bit of indie in my time way back a sa teen...
Its just loopy slightly heavier The Field innit?
― jimitheexploder, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 01:31 (fourteen years ago)
I meant your idea that there are posters who like the Blondes and Talabot and poppy UK funky and not other stuff you like seems like a strawman of me that couldn't possibly apply to any other ILM poster.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 01:36 (fourteen years ago)
I was just trying to draw a reaction, to see what the deal was with John and the Blondes. Since you funky goons are pretty much the only goons on ILM worth taking a poll of. Maybe I'm missing somingthing with John and the Blondes? Just playin' about. Wouldn't tease if I thought you lot where shit or anything.
― jimitheexploder, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 01:42 (fourteen years ago)
Liking Blondes and Talabot has very little to do with liking DFA, and a lot to do with liking tech-house IMO, and in particular I suspect liking the golden age of electro-house into big room minimal circa 2004-2006.
I don't think there's anything particularly indie sounding about either album, except for hipster house associations with Blondes that have no real bearing on the sound of the music, and the Delorean guy's vocals on the on the one Talabot tune.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 02:40 (fourteen years ago)
Off two exposures this is really nicely put together, smooth, head-nodding, but it's lacking a little something... alien, or unique, or really idiosyncratic. It just seems "really good" rather than "special", which is fine and dandy, and will probably turn out to be more than enough after continued exposure, but I've not gone "wow" at it. Yet.
― Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 07:56 (fourteen years ago)
blondes and talabot aren't very similar at all
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:04 (fourteen years ago)
the best bits of the talabot album feel like coming up, that's what's special about it
I wouldn't know what that feels like...
― Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:53 (fourteen years ago)
i wouldn't use the words 'dirgy', 'retro', 'indie' or 'tech house' to describe either of the records under question, nor would i lump them together at all. and yea calling blondes 'indie' is hella frustrating after all the circuitous discussions in the h****** house thred
― psychgawsple, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 09:36 (fourteen years ago)
well i guess 'retro' might be applicable. but no more so than with any other house record in 2012
― psychgawsple, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 09:38 (fourteen years ago)
This is how I approach most dance music, I've realised. Like, a little 'tish' noise coming in at the right time or a melodic loop that changes the whole complexion of the sound does so much more for me than a massive drop or whatever.
Blondes and Talabot are pretty similar in their approach and sound palette I think. Blondes are a bit hazier, druggier, later in the party maybe.

^^^
Entire post.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 09:41 (fourteen years ago)
idk the blondes record feels more like a grouping of refined jam sessions, more fluid and less deliberate in approach imo. which is not to say that they don't know what they're doing, i mean this in a respective sense
― psychgawsple, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 09:55 (fourteen years ago)
blondes appeal to me more because of sound design and mood, talabot because of melody and structure (build-and-release etc)
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 11:04 (fourteen years ago)
not my favorite thing he's ever done but this is pretty solid actually

was listening to fin on spotify today and was like "damn, this album is finally clicking with me!" when i realized i was already 4 sounds through the families ep :-\
― ⚓ (gr8080), Tuesday, 6 March 2012 00:11 (fourteen years ago)
ya, that's funny cause the families ep never really clicked with *me*
― psychgawsple, Tuesday, 6 March 2012 04:58 (fourteen years ago)

Adore this remix, as good as anything on the album I reckon:
― Tim F, Sunday, 18 March 2012 16:47 (fourteen years ago)

Err... those remixes are just posted above, Tim!
But yes, they are both lovely.
― MikoMcha, Sunday, 18 March 2012 17:52 (fourteen years ago)
haha I even scrolled up to check and somehow flew skipped right over them... Sorry for cluttering the thread.
― Tim F, Sunday, 18 March 2012 17:57 (fourteen years ago)
despite the vocals, "journeys" is the track i find myself revisiting the most
― teledyldonix, Monday, 19 March 2012 07:28 (fourteen years ago)
I love the stutters that Talabot puts into the rhythms of tracks like that, there's a real carefree swing to them.
― Tim F, Monday, 19 March 2012 09:28 (fourteen years ago)
"matilda's dream" is incredible. made me cry.

It's a warm night in Brooklyn, and I have the windows wide open even though it's perhaps a little chilly for that kind of abandon. I've spent maybe five nights this entire month in NY, having been traveling a ton for work and spending five nights in Jamaica last week. I went a little crazy at Other Music today, and this record is now spinning on my turntable. Granted I'm a little drunk on a beautiful red Burgundy, but this is just AMAZINGLY lovely and delicious. It feels perfect for this exact moment, a sort of drunken wistfulness, the coolness of the air a little biting but the reality of open windows so sweet...

i have avoided hearing anything by that band because of their name for at least a year now. talabot why are you making me break this policy
― lex pretend, Saturday, 31 March 2012 14:01 (fourteen years ago)
The band name alone is awful.
― MikoMcha, Saturday, 31 March 2012 16:33 (fourteen years ago)
Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs are pretty good though. There's an excellent Joe Goddard mix of one of their tunes out there as well.

yeah "tapes & money" is fantastic
