huh?

DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Monday, 27 February 2012 14:18 (twelve years ago) link

Uh, if there's a "favorite citrus" ballot poll, I don't want Gravenstein Apple in the nominations list. "Marquee Moon" is a great song, but it doesn't fall in the Classic Rock canon. I kinda like the Classic Rock idea and cutting through a lot of the preliminaries with straight radio science.

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Monday, 27 February 2012 14:45 (twelve years ago) link

Normally I'd say let the community decide via its votes, but the community being ILM that'd likely produce some classic rock consensus in favour of The Fall.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 27 February 2012 14:51 (twelve years ago) link

pretty much, yeah

DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Monday, 27 February 2012 14:51 (twelve years ago) link

Well, pfff, let's see the 500 list.

If there's 50 worth nom, then yes.

Mark G, Monday, 27 February 2012 14:53 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I mean, I love Marquee Moon, but we had the 70s Trax poll already...this would really be, yknow, BTO and Heart and Bad Company and so on. Probably some overlap with other polls (esp Stones and Zep).

Seems like the right historical moment too, since a lot of CR stations have been changing formats - the one here calls itself ''the next generation of classic rock'' and basically shifts the timeline up until Use Your Illusion. It'd be fun to survey the CLASSIC classic rock canon.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 27 February 2012 15:11 (twelve years ago) link

As long as "American Pie" doesn't place, I'm down.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 27 February 2012 15:15 (twelve years ago) link

I have little classic rock radio songs bouncing around in my bloodstream. Would vote, would vote for "Sultans of Swing" as my #1 song, though so consider yourselves warned.

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Monday, 27 February 2012 15:28 (twelve years ago) link

Nowt wrong with Sultans Of Swing, though Fleetwood Mac have this poll all sewn up.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 27 February 2012 15:57 (twelve years ago) link

poll hasn't even been organized yet and the results are already in dire straits

DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Monday, 27 February 2012 15:58 (twelve years ago) link

I would throw a couple points to "Walk of Life" maybe, although perhaps that's a bit late in the game.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 27 February 2012 16:00 (twelve years ago) link

seems like a big enough poll concept to fall outside the artist polls, like Postwar Jazz Albums or Alltime Rap Tracks

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Monday, 27 February 2012 16:02 (twelve years ago) link

PS. Steve Miller Band and/or "Rock & Roll Hootchie-Koo" for the win.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 27 February 2012 16:24 (twelve years ago) link

ok, i got the top 500 spins for classic rock in 2011/2012 -- casino did you want to run the poll? i can send you the data i just got but i'd be happy to sign up to run the poll myself.

DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Monday, 27 February 2012 17:25 (twelve years ago) link

Do it! Start the thread.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 27 February 2012 17:33 (twelve years ago) link

it was DC's idea, i'm not gonna yank it from him w/o permission, also shouldn't it go in the queue with all the other ballot polls?

DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Monday, 27 February 2012 17:35 (twelve years ago) link

― Steamtable Willie (WmC), Monday, February 27, 2012 10:02 AM (1 hour ago)

But I'm just one opinion in a Costco-sized variety pack of opinions, so --

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Monday, 27 February 2012 17:41 (twelve years ago) link

well the idea of the queue is to kind of streamline ballot polls so there's not a bunch going on at once, right? i don't see why single-artist polls would be excepted from that.

DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Monday, 27 February 2012 17:45 (twelve years ago) link

I agree, it should go in the queue - there are so many more of these things now compared to a year or two ago, it seems like.

I'm into doing it, if nobody minds the fact that my REM poll took like a year to get all the results out...

Would definitely want to preface it with a rules/debate thread to work out the best mechanism for noms. I'd definitely be interested to see the 2011 list - but I feel like the 2011 idea of a classic rock playlist is different than what I have in my head. Who knows? Would be an interesting poll regardless, I do like the "objectivity" of a given list to work from. Hmmm.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 27 February 2012 18:11 (twelve years ago) link

i agree w/ that -- looking at the 500, i'd be tempted to throw out anything post-1990, if not earlier, for poll options. i could try and get some data from earlier years but i kinda feel like there wouldn't be a huge difference other than some of the newer stuff creeping in.

if you think you'd take a long time compiling results, people tend to get impatient about that sort of thing, if you want help or would rather hand it off, but it's totally your call.

DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Monday, 27 February 2012 18:19 (twelve years ago) link

I'd love to compare today's Classic Rock 500 and the same list from 2000. xposts

(the list in progress)

gospodin simmel, Monday, 27 February 2012 18:46 (twelve years ago) link

can we restrict these to one week-long nomination periods or something? seems like they're taking 4ever

ploppawheelie V (k3vin k.), Monday, 27 February 2012 19:12 (twelve years ago) link

at the very least we should get back in the groove of 1 voting + 1 revealing

iatee, Monday, 27 February 2012 19:13 (twelve years ago) link

we literally JUST got back on track with the first couple after the sandbox/year-end-lists hiatus so "seems" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in k3v's post

flagellated

iatee, Monday, 27 February 2012 19:26 (twelve years ago) link

Is there special correlating software, or is it just a spreadsheet? If it's relatively simple, I'd run a Cover Version poll

kornrulez6969, Monday, 27 February 2012 19:52 (twelve years ago) link

I used notepad & pencil, I don't think there's a set format.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 27 February 2012 19:56 (twelve years ago) link

someone has an xls upthread, if you have basic knowledge of excel it shouldn't be too hard

iatee, Monday, 27 February 2012 19:57 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, here's finefinemusic's xls template from upthread -- Thread for coordinating the order and timing of ILM ballot polls

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Monday, 27 February 2012 20:00 (twelve years ago) link

last year someone asked about doing a cover songs poll and i really have no idea how it would work: Thread for coordinating the order and timing of ILM ballot polls

DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Monday, 27 February 2012 20:02 (twelve years ago) link

Put me down for Elvis Costello

kornrulez6969, Monday, 27 February 2012 20:06 (twelve years ago) link

DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Monday, 27 February 2012 20:07 (twelve years ago) link

looking forward to this classic rock poll! in the UK we never had rock radio like you guys get so there's no radio overkill on a lot of these songs

Thanks guy!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Monday, 27 February 2012 21:06 (twelve years ago) link

yay, i'm stoked to do the classic rock canon! I think I can probably stick to a more reasonable timeline now that I really know what I'm in for...I also moved from the US to India and back during the course of the REM poll, so there was a lot going on.

somedude, would definitely love to see the 500 spreadsheet - donutdisturbed AT hotmail DOT etc. Thanks!!
