Ummm Tuomas fyi Europe in itself has many seperate MTVs.
Not until the late 90s, IIRC. Certainly not when I started watching it.
― Tuomas, Friday, 24 February 2012 14:24 (twelve years ago) link
hell I hadn't heard "Lovely One" until two years ago.
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 24 February 2012 14:25 (twelve years ago) link
In late seventies America the Jacksons weren't a major pop force; the success of Off The Wall eclipsed his bros' records.

oh shit yeah 1997... which is when i started paying attention to music and videos and whatever. Did they just show everything in English then or were there shows in Finnish shown in Greece etc. etc.?

It was just one English language MTV for the whole Europe. It was produced in Britain, though many of the hosts were from other countries.
― Tuomas, Friday, 24 February 2012 14:28 (twelve years ago) link
I guess it was just vids+beavus and butthead/real word repeats at the time

Watch out for 'Janet in Super Bowl Boob Mishap' straight in at #3.
CYFI is dope and as a Europeaner it does seem odd people would know it. Seems like such a ubiquitus (sp?) song. Also I now need to go find a dictionary after finding out I'm not sure how to spell ubiquitus (sp?).
― a hoy hoy, Friday, 24 February 2012 14:48 (twelve years ago) link
Also Tuomas the happy-sounding thing discouraging votes in this poll is crazy considering how many of these songs are just downright =) type jams.
― a hoy hoy, Friday, 24 February 2012 14:49 (twelve years ago) link
would NOT know it, xpost to myself.
"ubiquitous"
― Tuomas, Friday, 24 February 2012 14:52 (twelve years ago) link
Took me a few tries before I learned to spell that one right.

Yeah, despite chart rankings, obv CYFI's stock in the Jackson canon has risen considerably.
Because it's killer, mostly.
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Friday, 24 February 2012 15:10 (twelve years ago) link
i'm listening to it right now and...eh. might be more into it w/o the backing vocals singing the title over and over.

― DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Friday, 24 February 2012 19:05 (twelve years ago) link
wow @ 50+ point differential between #8 and #7
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 24 February 2012 19:09 (twelve years ago) link
"If" is just the motherfucking greatest. My #1.
― prolego, Friday, 24 February 2012 19:10 (twelve years ago) link
michael looks so sad when he sings "no one wants to be defeated" sitting on his bed in the beginning
― horseshoe, Friday, 24 February 2012 19:11 (twelve years ago) link
i am obsessed with the "beat it" video
― horseshoe, Friday, 24 February 2012 19:12 (twelve years ago) link
Damn, Janet's highest ranking is #8?!
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Friday, 24 February 2012 19:12 (twelve years ago) link
(I was the other 1st place vote for "If," obv.)
not surprised tbh
― DNRIYHM NATION 1814 (some dude), Friday, 24 February 2012 19:13 (twelve years ago) link
Still, I can only think of one song that's going to place in the top 6 that's going to make me wish it was lower than "If."
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Friday, 24 February 2012 19:14 (twelve years ago) link
Beat It was my no.1. Perfect record (like that distinguishes it in this poll).

seems ridic to complain about "rock with you" placing too low and yet
― horseshoe, Friday, 24 February 2012 19:46 (twelve years ago) link
there should have been like a 10-way tie for #1
Damn, "Billie Jean" lower than "Human Nature"?
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Friday, 24 February 2012 20:12 (twelve years ago) link
Fingers crossed "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" and "Wanna Be Startin' Something" are tied for 1st.
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Friday, 24 February 2012 20:13 (twelve years ago) link
not only is "human nature" better than "billie jean," but i believe that's ilm orthodoxy at this point
