this is a stacked comparison. the thong song was over a decade ago!

OK, fair enough. This time I looked up Sisqo on People's own search. It appears he was profiled or mentioned in the magazine five times in 2000, the year "Thong Song" was released. Kreayshawn still mentioned zero times in 2011.

Ascot Fitzgerald (jaymc), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:27 (fourteen years ago)

even her one hit is only by a much looser definition of "hit," though. to give a more modern comparison, she's probably about 2% as famous as nicki minaj.

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

wtf how is this an argument i can't even

kreayshawn is less famous than sisqo NOW let alone then

lex pretend, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

i'm pretty much with lex on this one

pre-tennis ball head-era chris brown (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

she is more famous than Nokio

dave coolier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:32 (fourteen years ago)

lol

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:33 (fourteen years ago)

it's funny how this "debate" immediately devolved into minutiae - I just listed some random one-hit wonders off the top of my head. the music industry has always had these kinds of figures, and has always been willing/eager to devote disproportional amount of attention to them. given the massive changes in the media landscape over the last decade, it's not really that surprising that a media outlet in a dying format (ie, GQ) is willing/eager to jump on a new media (ie "internet sensation") bandwagon. I do not find this in the least bit surprising. They're just trying to stay "current" as their readership/income dwindles away.

erotic war comedy pollster (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:36 (fourteen years ago)

I think there is a point here - that once you get into tens of millions of views on youtube you are pretty well known to some percentage of the population, way more well known than if you toured the country playing showcases and doing radio interviews for 2 months.

multimillion views for a musician can lead to mainstream media coverage and you become something of a household name (a la rebecca black), or it can be parlayed into a successful niche career (like em or not, odd future are going to be around for a while), or they can get you onto SNL and target end caps (see LDR).

in comparison, anybody remember joey quits? I know some of the folks in this band from the local scene. their viral vid lead to some broader national and international exposure for what cheer and a headlining slot at a CMJ event that prolly wouldn't have happened otherwise, but they stalled out around 3MM views.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9A4UGtM4hDQ

the mighty azealia banks hasn't broken 5MM views yet. so while kreayshawn isn't a mainstream media figure, she's definitely more high profile than either of those folks and can't be classified as some viral oddity. I mean, her shitty "bumpin bumpin" vid has over 7MM views.

plus I bet her marketing budget was a lot smaller than sisqo's. I think it's important to couch this discussion in terms of people who were getting little-to-no PR push via the standard channels.

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:38 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah, i totally get that

but what i've been saying is that the hype cycle is so fast these days that it's actually kind of odd that all these places are still lingering on kreayshawn that you might've expected to move onto lana del rey or azealia banks or whatever by now (xpost)

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:38 (fourteen years ago)

like if you asked me a few months ago whether kreayshawn would be still getting this kind of press coverage in feb 2012, i'd say "sure, if she had another big single and her album had a release date," which neither of those things have happened

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:39 (fourteen years ago)

maybe it's just a trickle-down (up?) thing where the more mainstream outlets are just getting around to her? she does seem to have a weird crossover appeal that's not quite mainstream but not underground. apparently the college show she did here was just jam-packed craziness (and then everyone left when neon indian went on).

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

so "rich whores" wasn't an official single? i thought that was the follow-up

lex pretend, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:43 (fourteen years ago)

i mean pre-tennis ball head-era chris brown, any tv show or movie could show a black guy with blonde or silver hair acting a fool and everyone on earth would know they were parodying sisqo without any further context clues.

yeah I don't know about this - I'm having trouble picturing what sisqo even looked like, and guaranteed most attendees at a wedding would recognize the song but if you showed them a pic of sisqo and andre 3000 and asked who performed the song you'd prolly get a lot of false positives.

anyway there's no good way to quantify this stuff and I'm not even sure what we're arguing about but I'm pretty sure you really like the thong song

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:45 (fourteen years ago)

it's actually kind of odd that all these places are still lingering on kreayshawn that you might've expected to move onto lana del rey or azealia banks or whatever by now

LDR doesn't really have an edgy cachet any more now she's fully mnstrm; AZB has, i think, battened down the press hatches for now, with her album actually in the pipeline, with a title and everything - i assume her people want to focus the press then

lex pretend, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:46 (fourteen years ago)

well i mean she got to some mainstream outlets pretty quickly -- she was showing up on the VMAs and my local mainstream R&B station within the first 3 months of blowing up on youtube. i just didn't think the publicity train would keep rolling this far without either a) the song become an actual bona fide pop hit or b) a steady stream of more new music, neither of which has happened.

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:46 (fourteen years ago)

the 'random people at a wedding'/12 CDs a year argument doesn't really mean anything unless you genuinely think THOSE people know all about kreayshawn

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:47 (fourteen years ago)

if i had to guess, it'd be that these outlets must be taking a punt on kreayshawn being a good long-term bet to stick around in the public eye - and for that not necessarily to involve her music (whereas you can imagine AZB, if she doesn't cross over fully, just ending up being someone music people care about)

lex pretend, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

also, hacks and their clueless editors drooling over a juicy 'angle'

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:49 (fourteen years ago)

yeah but again azealia banks doesn't have the mainstream appeal that kreayshawn does. shes an alt star at this point

D-40, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

cf edward's 3 million views vs. 30 million views

D-40, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

my post was re: kreayshawn, not azealia banks, i think we all know who is more famous betweent hose 2

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:55 (fourteen years ago)

the 'random people at a wedding'/12 CDs a year argument doesn't really mean anything unless you genuinely think THOSE people know all about kreayshawn

yeah see I don't, but we're getting into some "who is bonnie bear" area here

when justin timberlake mocked on bon iver on SNL there were prolly as many ppl saying WTF as there would have been if nasim pedrad had walked in decked out as kreayshawn

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:58 (fourteen years ago)

no, nasim will be v-nasty when abby elliott stars in the sketch about kreayshawn performing at the 2014 super bowl

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

hope she drops a deuce on the 50 yard line

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 23 February 2012 20:00 (fourteen years ago)

people will be elated, not shocked, by that in the aftermath of "do the prairie dog" becoming a worldwide dance craze

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 20:02 (fourteen years ago)

I love you man but you're starting to sound like the morbz of rap music

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 23 February 2012 20:07 (fourteen years ago)

i don't know how you get morbz from those last few posts, unless you're misreading some dramatic 'society is in the gutter' undercurrent to them

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 20:08 (fourteen years ago)

lol yeah I was picking up a vibe

by 2016 everyone will be a kreayshawn fan covered in their own feces voting for obamaclown's 3rd term GOOD RIDDENS

never mind me

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 23 February 2012 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

haha

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 20:12 (fourteen years ago)

how popular is SNL?

D-40, Thursday, 23 February 2012 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

he asked completely seriously

D-40, Thursday, 23 February 2012 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

it's seemed really popular to me in the past few seasons

pre-tennis ball head-era chris brown (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 23 February 2012 20:31 (fourteen years ago)

Jimmy Fallon: A new poll says that if there was a vote for first lady, Laura Bush would beat Teresa Heinz Kerry in a 2 to 1 landslide. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus total irrelevance.

^^ the SNL joke i thought of when trying to express how completely pointless deej's question is

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

like whether someone is famous enough to be parodied on SNL has nothing to do w/ how many people watch SNL. you can substitute "is famous enough to be a popular Halloween costume."

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 20:33 (fourteen years ago)

to answer the irrelevant question, SNL almost on par with american idol ratings

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 23 February 2012 20:38 (fourteen years ago)

lonely island is definitely a far more popular satirical white rap act than kreayshawn

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 20:43 (fourteen years ago)

they are better rappers too

dave coolier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 23 February 2012 20:45 (fourteen years ago)

yes but is kreayshawn more famous than andy samberg's harpist girlfriend

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 23 February 2012 20:47 (fourteen years ago)

hard to say, they have the exact same fanbase

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 20:48 (fourteen years ago)

this was more a joke about lol no one watches SNL than a serious inquiry into the relative popularity based on SNL appearances or w/e thus the sarcastic follow up post but keep up the good fight

D-40, Thursday, 23 February 2012 21:35 (fourteen years ago)

also, i didnt get any of the jokes you guys were making b/c i don't watch SNL

D-40, Thursday, 23 February 2012 21:35 (fourteen years ago)

none of the jokes we made require any context beyond knowing what SNL is (or who lonely island are)

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 21:42 (fourteen years ago)

all this shit should've been posted in the rolling sisqo thread

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Thursday, 23 February 2012 21:43 (fourteen years ago)

can't find it w/ search function...let me see that thread

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

time to reevaluate

i think i'm siding with thong song these days to my considerable surprise.

i think you have to know more than the fact that SNL exists to get whats going on here

D-40, Thursday, 23 February 2012 21:51 (fourteen years ago)

those are just the names of 2 female cast members, i thought that was easily inferred, oh well

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 21:52 (fourteen years ago)
