I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

that was just from a single youtube video, there are definitely a lot more. do you want me to aggregate them and do some statistical analysis or something

xp

erotic war comedy pollster (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

can you cook me up a coefficient of variance on kreayshawn youtube views? also be sure to factor in campus utility data

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:38 (fourteen years ago)

just curious, where did you get this? i never know where to look for tv figures

Tiny Tim's wikipedia entry, which cites an interview he gave in 1974, which has (of course) been lol removed for a copyright claim. I suspect those are Nielsen numbers tho.

erotic war comedy pollster (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

that single youtube video is pretty much kreayshawn's entire career, though

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

no, I meant that that's the view count on a single upload of the video - there are a whole bunch of other uploads of the same video, each with their own view counts

erotic war comedy pollster (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:40 (fourteen years ago)

There is a fairly diverse demographic in my office of about 120 or so and I can guarantee that none of these people know who Kreay is. all of them know the words to the thong song tho

Aerosol, Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

tiny tim used to live in the penthouse suite of the hotel fort des moines

Critique of Pure Moods (goole), Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

my only point is that novelty songs have always generated celebrity, there is nothing that unusual going on here

erotic war comedy pollster (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

his ukelele got stolen out of the lobby! it made the news

Critique of Pure Moods (goole), Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:42 (fourteen years ago)

this is the best argument on ilx right now. riveted.

max, Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:43 (fourteen years ago)

all of them know the words to the thong song tho

I demand a youtube video as proof

erotic war comedy pollster (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:44 (fourteen years ago)

also u.s. population was 202M in 69, 311M now, so the percentage for kreayshawn shrinks as well

dave coolier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

how much has GQ's readership shrunk lol

erotic war comedy pollster (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

but 12.4MM viewers saw kreayshawn on the MTV video awards so you have to factor in at least a 37% halo effect SCIENCE

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:52 (fourteen years ago)

im really confounded by this piece as well or the continual coverage & I'm not clear why she's not releasing music

that said i think you guys are really underestimating how popular she is

D-40, Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

not that i'm convinced that popularity will turn into fans

but she's certainly a known celebrity at this point

D-40, Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

yeah but comparable to who? the bar for 'celebrity' is pretty low these days, everybody is famous to somebody etc.

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

no i think we are estimating her popularity with terrific accuracy

goole, Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

I have a pie chart

erotic war comedy pollster (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 23 February 2012 18:56 (fourteen years ago)

impossible to answer but i dont know why you're so confident that sisqo was more known

D-40, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:01 (fourteen years ago)

are you crazy? sisqo was, between his group and solo records, the lead voice on like half a dozen huge pop hits and several platinum albums. there's no comparison.

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

more fans =/= more known. im just saying, she's famous

D-40, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

if we agree sisqo was more popular then than kreayshawn is now, can we all go home?

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:06 (fourteen years ago)

the thing is that Sisqo was even more famous in a punchline/meme way at his peak than Kreayshawn is now, it's not like he was some unassuming R&B radio darling who never crossed over

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

ok... so what's your point again?

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:12 (fourteen years ago)

just that shakey and deej are dumb for thinking she's as famous as sisqo. not a very epic cause, i suppose.

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:13 (fourteen years ago)

im just saying, kreayshawn gets covered by like gossip blogs & gawker'd about and similar such shit, its a much larger audience than music fans

D-40, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:14 (fourteen years ago)

since when did sisqo become some bellwether for popularity

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:15 (fourteen years ago)

the sisqo test

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:15 (fourteen years ago)

he puts the q back in q score

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:15 (fourteen years ago)

i mean pre-tennis ball head-era chris brown, any tv show or movie could show a black guy with blonde or silver hair acting a fool and everyone on earth would know they were parodying sisqo without any further context clues. if someone on a sketch show dressed up like kreayshawn, 95% of the audience would think they were supposed to be ke$ha, gaga or amy winehouse.

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:16 (fourteen years ago)

I'm mostly on Al's side in this debate, but I'm hesitating b/c my wife is a big fan of "Gucci Gucci."

Ascot Fitzgerald (jaymc), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

yeah but...your wife was familiar with "thong song," right?

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

i mean having an article in a mag as big as GQ that spends its whole length explaining who you are and how you became known basically = plenty famous but not really all that famous

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:20 (fourteen years ago)

yeah but...your wife was familiar with "thong song," right?

Oh, of course.

im on al's side about how ridiculous it is that she gets that level of coverage i just think her famous-ness w/ the 12-CD crowd is being way underestimated. the fact is she's crossed over to non-music pubs so talking about how she doesnt have platinum albums or more than one hit in the span of nine months is kind of beside the point w/r/t her famous-ity

this is a stacked comparison. the thong song was over a decade ago!

D-40, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

Kreayshawn and Sisqo get an equal number of hits (three) on usmagazine.com, but to be fair, I don't think Us's archives don't go back as far as People's, and all of the references to Kreayshawn had to do with the VMAs.

Ascot Fitzgerald (jaymc), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

this is a stacked comparison. the thong song was over a decade ago!

OK, fair enough. This time I looked up Sisqo on People's own search. It appears he was profiled or mentioned in the magazine five times in 2000, the year "Thong Song" was released. Kreayshawn still mentioned zero times in 2011.

Ascot Fitzgerald (jaymc), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:27 (fourteen years ago)

even her one hit is only by a much looser definition of "hit," though. to give a more modern comparison, she's probably about 2% as famous as nicki minaj.

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

wtf how is this an argument i can't even

kreayshawn is less famous than sisqo NOW let alone then

lex pretend, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

i'm pretty much with lex on this one

pre-tennis ball head-era chris brown (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

she is more famous than Nokio

dave coolier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:32 (fourteen years ago)

lol

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:33 (fourteen years ago)

it's funny how this "debate" immediately devolved into minutiae - I just listed some random one-hit wonders off the top of my head. the music industry has always had these kinds of figures, and has always been willing/eager to devote disproportional amount of attention to them. given the massive changes in the media landscape over the last decade, it's not really that surprising that a media outlet in a dying format (ie, GQ) is willing/eager to jump on a new media (ie "internet sensation") bandwagon. I do not find this in the least bit surprising. They're just trying to stay "current" as their readership/income dwindles away.

erotic war comedy pollster (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:36 (fourteen years ago)

I think there is a point here - that once you get into tens of millions of views on youtube you are pretty well known to some percentage of the population, way more well known than if you toured the country playing showcases and doing radio interviews for 2 months.

multimillion views for a musician can lead to mainstream media coverage and you become something of a household name (a la rebecca black), or it can be parlayed into a successful niche career (like em or not, odd future are going to be around for a while), or they can get you onto SNL and target end caps (see LDR).

in comparison, anybody remember joey quits? I know some of the folks in this band from the local scene. their viral vid lead to some broader national and international exposure for what cheer and a headlining slot at a CMJ event that prolly wouldn't have happened otherwise, but they stalled out around 3MM views.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9A4UGtM4hDQ

the mighty azealia banks hasn't broken 5MM views yet. so while kreayshawn isn't a mainstream media figure, she's definitely more high profile than either of those folks and can't be classified as some viral oddity. I mean, her shitty "bumpin bumpin" vid has over 7MM views.

plus I bet her marketing budget was a lot smaller than sisqo's. I think it's important to couch this discussion in terms of people who were getting little-to-no PR push via the standard channels.

I GUESS THAT CINNABON GETTIN EATEN (Edward III), Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:38 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah, i totally get that

but what i've been saying is that the hype cycle is so fast these days that it's actually kind of odd that all these places are still lingering on kreayshawn that you might've expected to move onto lana del rey or azealia banks or whatever by now (xpost)

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:38 (fourteen years ago)

like if you asked me a few months ago whether kreayshawn would be still getting this kind of press coverage in feb 2012, i'd say "sure, if she had another big single and her album had a release date," which neither of those things have happened

some dude, Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:39 (fourteen years ago)
