And did the Cure, furthermore, ever have drums as tight as the ones on that song or a bass line as energetic as the one in the chorus?
I find things like this to be startling, frankly.

"My blood sugar is low / this music sucks / you guys suck" vs. "I just ate an orange / this music is awesome / you guys suck"
― real life is no dave cool (Ówen P.), Thursday, 23 February 2012 01:25 (fourteen years ago)
I'd have to call this music indie-pop or something cause it's better than "riyl The Knife"

lol an ilm thread about a record on slumberland 2012
― 99x (Lamp), Thursday, 23 February 2012 01:54 (fourteen years ago)
"Night Swim" has a genuine Feelies groove, but it's a couple of other entirely different awesome things on top of that.
― timellison, Thursday, 23 February 2012 06:44 (fourteen years ago)
this is currently my favorite album of 2012.
― ⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 23 February 2012 09:28 (fourteen years ago)
Sorta sounds like the most restrained side of Stereolab minus the synths and communism
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 23 February 2012 11:58 (fourteen years ago)
Pitchfork review referenced the Cure and surely you hear that in "Know Me," but are those Cure chords? I don't think they are (unless they're similar to some Cure songs I don't know).
It's more like Cocteau Twins or "This Charming Man" than The Cure, but you can hear similarities all over Seventeen Seconds and Faith.
"Primary" has TWO basslines that are just as energetic throughout the entire song, and the Boris Williams era of the band is pretty much defined by the precision of his drumming and the crispness with which it was recorded. Also, the beat pattern of "Know Me" is almost identical to "Close To Me".

Album just showed up in today's mail...this thing looks 100x as sweet irl.

You know, what the chords remind me of on that song is Felt.

did any fans of this rec get into the Blouse album from last year?
― ~=(,,_,,):3 (electricsound), Friday, 24 February 2012 03:12 (fourteen years ago)
The Blouse album was okay imo, but it was never in constant rotation. However, I think I'll give it another go now.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 24 February 2012 05:22 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, I thought the Blouse album was best in small doses. I've only given this Frankie Rose record one listen so far, but it hits my sweet spot.
― Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 24 February 2012 16:33 (fourteen years ago)
I only have one song from that Blouse album - "Videotapes," which I loved. What are the best songs?
― Walter Galt, Friday, 24 February 2012 17:10 (fourteen years ago)
If anyone sees the pretty vinyl anywhere, can you send up a flare? It's not even on Discogs or eBay or anything.
― Walter Galt, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:50 (fourteen years ago)
this thread got me jazzed up for the album, but the few songs i've heard have been quite dull :(
― Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 22:00 (fourteen years ago)
it's a pretty dull album
― 3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 22:01 (fourteen years ago)
I still like it, so whatevs. But it's no secret that I'm dull too.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 22:04 (fourteen years ago)
This is pretty nice actually, like most of it more than the single.
― Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 22:06 (fourteen years ago)
Pulled this out for the first time in a few months. Nice.

I was mostly neutral on the previous album but I'm totally on board for this one.
― a dessicated quasi-tsunami of gut-busting cosmic - tech (DJP), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 15:51 (twelve years ago)
This album is fantastic. Sorrow was one of my big discoveries on the Spotify playlist but there's probably a couple of songs on here I like even more. Didn't really get into Interstellar when it came out but only played it once, should probably go back and give it another chance.
― Kitchen Person, Thursday, 16 January 2014 02:14 (twelve years ago)
I love this album so, so much, but that's not really a surprise considering how much I loved the last one. Definitely a progression between the two, this latest one strays less into pretty confectionary (not that I have anything against pretty confectionary textures!) and adds a slight "spooky goth" element which is like catnip to me. Less Smiths, more Pornography-era Cure, which can only be a good thing.
She reminds me a lot of ways of my sisX0r, so there is a lot of that kind of nostalgia thing going on.
But, alas, I love her... so she's dooooooomed to be underrated forever.
― Branwell Bell, Thursday, 16 January 2014 10:03 (twelve years ago)
she's dooooooomed to be underrated forever.
with her hook-y, poppy, goth-y retro-80s sound, i actually think she could be someone who breaks-out of the indie ghetto, with the right song.
― Daniel, Esq 2, Thursday, 16 January 2014 12:42 (twelve years ago)
I really hope so!
But I also know from experience School of Seven Bells things that tend to be so tightly and closely aligned to "OMG, this was *made* for meeeeee!" tend to end up with a cult appeal.
Please let me be wrong, though, because this stuff is wonderful.
― Branwell Bell, Thursday, 16 January 2014 12:53 (twelve years ago)
This album!
We don't sleeeep we dreeeeeeaaaaaaaaammmmmmm...

she is terrific.
― Daniel, Esq 2, Sunday, 9 February 2014 21:44 (twelve years ago)
No, no, no, my favourite song is actually falling from Cliffs As High... those bitter sweet strings!
But yeah. She is amazing.
I have never heard clouds of cotton candy guitar sound quite so edge-of-menacing.
― "righteous indignation shit" (Branwell Bell), Sunday, 9 February 2014 21:52 (twelve years ago)
I saw her live a few weeks ago and she was delightful. I bought a tie-dye tshirt from her at the merch table after.
― |$̲̅(̲̅ιοο̲̅)̲̅$̲̅| (gr8080), Sunday, 9 February 2014 21:53 (twelve years ago)
I should give this another go. I was quite unimpressed by this when I first heard it though. I found it too overtly retro perhaps.
― everyday sheeple (Michael B), Sunday, 9 February 2014 21:55 (twelve years ago)
Oh, it is very very retro, but the only way you could possibly make "wibbling spacerock with super girly harmony vox" any better at all, would be "add Pornography era Cure basslines."
(I have never and will never wear tie-dye but I would *almost* make an exception for Frankie Rose.)
― "righteous indignation shit" (Branwell Bell), Sunday, 9 February 2014 21:59 (twelve years ago)
anyone seen her play live? she's here on Friday. didn't even know about the new album, thought it would be on Slumberland.

I probably should have read this thread to the end, huh.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Monday, 10 February 2014 04:49 (twelve years ago)
Haha, OK, grey tie-dye is probably the most ~Frankie Rose~ thing I have ever heard of, so now I am super jealous not just of your show experience, but your shirt, too, Gr80.
f.hazel, yes, it's very good, you should go.
(She played in London but she was supporting someone terrible so I didn't go.)
