Hey! Something I voted for! The way MJ hits and holds those top notes on "Got To Be There" is just awe inspiring.
― Jeff W, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 16:45 (twelve years ago) link
lol I somehow completely forgot about "Thriller" the song when voting.
― Big Mr. Guess U.S.A. Champion (crüt), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 16:46 (twelve years ago) link
i made sure to vote for "Thriller" the song because i love it and feel like it tends to get overshadowed by "Thriller" the video and Thriller the album
― TERMAINTOR 2 (some dude), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 16:49 (twelve years ago) link
i made sure i gave 'thriller' top spot because i just *knew* it'd get overlooked by ilx. surprised it was overlooked that much though. the bassline and the bridge are just undeniable. it's one song that i've heard a million times that i can still get along with, in fact i probably like it more now than i did back then.

Got to be There really is one of the most beautiful songs I can think of, such an amazing vocal too.
― Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:04 (twelve years ago) link
'Thriller' placing so low is why I tend to think these rundowns should ideally be top 20 only - it'd be quite exciting to reach the top five and find all these classics that hadn't shown yet.
(no criticism intended btw Jamie, I always err on the long side myself)
― Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:13 (twelve years ago) link
Almost sure that nothing from the Motown era made my ballot, but it was at least in part a strategic move.
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:14 (twelve years ago) link
I didn't mention a single pre- or puberty hit song.

how is "I'll Be There" so low
― (thinks and smiles) (DJP), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:36 (twelve years ago) link
just started listening to the Spotify playlist, 50 may have been too much...huge improvement starting in the high 30s. great countdown so far though!
― skip, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:37 (twelve years ago) link
because either "Centipede" or "Diamonds" will be #1 with a bullet
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:40 (twelve years ago) link
i would've been surprised if "I'll Be There" placed higher tbh
― TERMAINTOR 2 (some dude), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:41 (twelve years ago) link
Not if my ballot box stuffing on behalf of "Hot Potato" has anything to say about it.
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:44 (twelve years ago) link
Might as well get this challops out of the way now. If "ABC" and "I Want You Back" place above "If" and "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough," I'll be pissed.

listen, "i want you back" has to be reckoned with
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:49 (twelve years ago) link
also, regarding "if":
here is my janet jackson challop: "rhythm nation" and "if" are essentially the same song, except "rhythm nation" is better.

that's not a challop, that's true
― (thinks and smiles) (DJP), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:52 (twelve years ago) link
It's not a challop!
I like "If" fine though, especially her feral tone on the verses.
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:52 (twelve years ago) link
"thriller" didn't even make my ballot but it seems too low. everything on this poll is too low.
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:53 (twelve years ago) link
i thought it was a challop because "If" is such an ilx fave
ha I was just about to post that the main thing "If" has going for it is Janet singing in a low tenor register for most of the verse and the rising scale out of it that leads into the pre-chorus
― (thinks and smiles) (DJP), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:53 (twelve years ago) link
her outfit in the "if" video is the cutest thing she's ever worn, maybe
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:54 (twelve years ago) link
it actually shocked college-aged me that I was taken aback at Janet Jackson cooing "your silky smooth/It feels so good against my lips, sugar" at me
― (thinks and smiles) (DJP), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 17:56 (twelve years ago) link
I mean, I got over it in like 5 seconds but at first I was all "well I guess we're done with waiting!"
"Got To Be There," "Never Can Say Goodbye," and "I'll Be There" are pretty much the alpha & omega of music

haha rich juzwiak had a good summary at some point of the evolution of janet's thematic concerns, album-by-album. i tried to find it to link on the nominations thread. even when it becomes and sort of stays the sex chronicles with janet there's a lot of variation of focus in the later albums.

21. Janet Jackson - Got ‘til It’s Gone (161 points, 8 votes, 1 1st Place Vote) Tied with 22 from The Velvet Rope, 1997
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uznTHSEgx4U
"I'll Be There" was my #1; would've expected a Top 10 finish.
― clemenza, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:09 (twelve years ago) link
yay "what have you done for me lately"!!! that has aged better for me than "nasty." is also a much better song than "got 'til it's gone" imo, though i love velvet rope.

"empty" should be higher than "got til it's gone," y'all
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:14 (twelve years ago) link
Awesome songs today on the whole.
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:22 (twelve years ago) link
Really not hearing "Rhythm Nation, Part 2" in "If." If there's a zero-effort "Rhythm Nation, Part 2," it's the two songs that follow it on the RN1814 album.
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:23 (twelve years ago) link
The main thing "If" has going for it is that psycho-intense filtering on the Supremes sample that turns it into some sort of android killing machine.
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:24 (twelve years ago) link
Uh-oh. Woulda figured at least one of those two Janet songs in the top 10 - and I wouldn't have even been surprised at "What Have You Done" going top 5. Guess I really should've voted for more Janet tracks.
― wolf cola, everyone (thewufs), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:29 (twelve years ago) link
So are any Janet songs gonna place top 10?
― wolf cola, everyone (thewufs), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:30 (twelve years ago) link
Aside from maybe "That's the Way Love Goes," I mean?
― wolf cola, everyone (thewufs), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:31 (twelve years ago) link
Right now, it's looking like "If" is it for the top 10. Maybe "Pleasure Principal."
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:39 (twelve years ago) link
omg, new (old?) pron title
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:40 (twelve years ago) link
Would love "Throb" or "What About" to place, but I think it's probably too late for that now.
― prolego, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:52 (twelve years ago) link
Is this going to turn into the Stevie Wonder poll all over again, with Innervisions (or, in this case, Thriller) taking up over half the top 10?
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:55 (twelve years ago) link
I can see "Don't Stop Till Tou Get Enough" winning though.
― prolego, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:03 (twelve years ago) link
The way these results have been going, it's too soon to make calls, but I'm starting to feel an "I Want You Back" triumph over "Billie Jean."
― dead-trius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:07 (twelve years ago) link
"Billie Jean" didn't even win the Thriller poll: THRILLER POLL
i really think "Don't Stop" is gonna take it all, since it's kind of THE Off The Wall hit where most of the other big Michael/Janet albums will kind of have votes split between a bunch of different songs
