Emmylou is amazing, probably my most listened track of the year, though I'm slightly ashamed about it

dave coolier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 17 February 2012 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

Go Polica! I will always root for local bands to do well on the national stage.

monster_xero, Friday, 17 February 2012 17:48 (fourteen years ago)

Finally listening to this Cloud Nothings.

This is exactly like the kind of cd I would've bought in 1995 for $2 in a cut-out bin because it looked neat or was on a cool label, and then I would listen to it once and never again. There's really no meat on this bone.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 17 February 2012 18:10 (fourteen years ago)

I couldn't disagree with that more, I've listened to that about 10 times so far and I keep going back for more. Its fantastic.

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 17 February 2012 21:20 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, um I kinda expect to be in the minority re: Cloud Nothings.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 17 February 2012 21:24 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think it's as good as the earlier stuff

are you ready for a little spittle? (electricsound), Friday, 17 February 2012 22:06 (fourteen years ago)

any thoughts on the terry malts lp on slumberland?

too many tracks from the singles imo but a fun black tambouriney kinda vibe prevails

Liking this new 2:54 song. Kind of Lushy, kind of Warpainty.

Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Friday, 24 February 2012 23:14 (fourteen years ago)

I like the Terry Malts on one listen all through, not had chance to absorb it quite yet though.

Tunabunny were ridiculously good the other night, looking forward to digesting 'Minima Moralia' in full now I've finally got a copy.

Cragenham Craig (Craigo Boingo), Saturday, 25 February 2012 23:50 (fourteen years ago)

not really feeling Terry Malts, too much Ramones sound and not enough Ramones hooks.

skip, Sunday, 26 February 2012 19:07 (fourteen years ago)

I figured out Terry Malts sounds like Smoking Popes vs. Jay Reatard.

Also, I've decided that Memoryhouse is one of the lamest "cool" bands going right now.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 26 February 2012 20:20 (fourteen years ago)

I just noticed that the press release for the Lincoln Center thing way upthread claims that Bill Callahan has earned the nickname "the John Wayne of indie-rock." I've never heard that, and can't find any reference to it aside from press releases. I wonder if Bill Callahan is trying to claim the nickname "the John Wayne of indie-rock."

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 26 February 2012 20:48 (fourteen years ago)

i've decided that new slumberland is just not for me. apart from the lodger I am not much for anything they have released in their new incarnation. it's all pretty decent but it doesn't seem like anything that bears repeated listening. but then i don't like anything on captured tracks either and everyone loves that stuff so maybe it has all passed me by.

keythhtyek, Monday, 27 February 2012 00:11 (fourteen years ago)

for me CT has put out a lot of very very good records but nothing classic yet.

surprised you don't like gold bears and sea lions. seems like they'd be up your alley.

‎~=(,,_,,):3 (electricsound), Monday, 27 February 2012 00:21 (fourteen years ago)

i thought the neverever ep was trash. cannot stand her voice anymore.

‎~=(,,_,,):3 (electricsound), Monday, 27 February 2012 00:22 (fourteen years ago)

Also, I've decided that Memoryhouse is one of the lamest "cool" bands going right now.

i thought their earlier stuff was really lovely, but the hype is out of control and i would say that sub pop is not the label for them.

‎~=(,,_,,):3 (electricsound), Monday, 27 February 2012 00:23 (fourteen years ago)

I have to agree - the LP does not live up to the promise of (the first release of, smdh) The Years. Also, why keep "Heirloom" for the LP but discard "Caregiver"?

Simon H., Monday, 27 February 2012 00:59 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah gold bears, i liked them. and of course i am looking forward to allo darlin but they aren't really a slumberland thing. but i listened to the devon williams and big troubles and it was meh. the new princeton record is pretty nice for rich guys making posh pop, one might have minor flashbacks of the push kings which may not be a good thing for many people. i think i may only like the lodger records because they remind of sneaky feelings.

keythhtyek, Monday, 27 February 2012 03:37 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, um I kinda expect to be in the minority re: Cloud Nothings.

― Johnny Fever, Friday, February 17, 2012

I still haven't made up my mind. I like some of 'em of it, but yep it sounds so 1995 and even 1985 at times. I need to listen a bit more and decide what they do or don't add to those sounds

curmudgeon, Monday, 27 February 2012 13:15 (fourteen years ago)

that 2:54 song is grebt!

I have one thing to say: "Roxanne Shanté" (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

"Free Time!" by Pinkunoizu yall. i want this band to catch on

caulk the wagon and float it, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 16:26 (fourteen years ago)

Pitchfork and the Washington Post love synth-pop indie entity Grimes. I have not given it a listen yet. Anyone? Or maybe they're for a different thread?

A new Keith Canisius ep just popped up, sooo good!

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:09 (fourteen years ago)

can't remember if i mentioned them but i've been digging Cue Fanfare a lot lately, though their current release was from last year. similar to the likes of ashby, birdie etc but without so much of the loungey tinges that unpleasantly colour much of the marina groups that they loosely resemble

gobbie billespie (electricsound), Thursday, 1 March 2012 06:17 (fourteen years ago)

thanks for the canisius tip, enjoying that EP.

^ could be good, could be shit, who knows?

Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Friday, 2 March 2012 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

Worth documenting perhaps, but could do without another rehash of the Tony Wilson/ Alan McGee/ Geoff Travers Stories TBH.

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Friday, 2 March 2012 16:47 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, looking at the guy's blog, I think that might be the bulk of it.

Thank you so much to whoever nominated this song in the 2011 tracks countdown - has turned into one of my three or four faves from the whole year:

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Friday, 2 March 2012 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

that whole single is great imo. so much better than their previous thing free loan investments

gobbie billespie (electricsound), Friday, 2 March 2012 23:16 (fourteen years ago)

Lies and slander. It is pretty good though

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Friday, 2 March 2012 23:21 (fourteen years ago)

Favourite Roger Gunnarsson thing is The Garlands, but that Pushy Parents EP is 100% gold.

Cragenham Craig (Craigo Boingo), Saturday, 3 March 2012 02:20 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I have the Garlands split single with someone and it's great, got it when they played London Popfest a couple of years ago

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 3 March 2012 09:37 (fourteen years ago)

Goddamn I wish I was 16 and could get fucked up to that Clound Nothings.

Besides being a great Godz song, they're a great Chicago band who just released their self-titled album. "Miracle" is on it, though this is technically from the single from last October.

ma ck ro ma ck ro (mackro mackro), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 08:55 (fourteen years ago)

They're like a fuzzy hybrid of The Bats and Outrageous Cherry.

ma ck ro ma ck ro (mackro mackro), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 08:56 (fourteen years ago)

after that description i was actually disappointed to find out i'd already heard of them

their LP is really good

new amy linton song--

the new megaphonic thrift album on club ac30 is a thing of shoegaze beauty

marty donald demo-

http://soundcloud.com/lost-and-lonesome/last-leaves-the-nights-you

sounds a lot like the lucksmiths obviously. new band 'last leaves' with 3 of the 4 lucksmiths and a new drummer.

keythhtyek, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 00:50 (fourteen years ago)

do you actually like it?

groanland (electricsound), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 00:52 (fourteen years ago)

(not a trick q)

groanland (electricsound), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 00:52 (fourteen years ago)

yeah. is that the wrong answer?:) i like everything marty though. besides, it's a demo, i am sure when they finish it it will be free jazz skronk and beats.

keythhtyek, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 01:00 (fourteen years ago)

ha no not wrong, but yeah it's probably my least favourite song of his thus far. will be v interested to see how it goes with the full band treatment. choosing to sing his own songs was an interesting idea

groanland (electricsound), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 01:11 (fourteen years ago)

feeling this and playing it a lot lately:
