They all use the same in-house producers for the most part, fwiw.

There should be an annual award for best mockery pf Jay-Z's BP3 aaaauh adlib

Raymond Cummings, Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:51 (fourteen years ago)

Yea you know what I'm rocking on today's drive home

Raymond Cummings, Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:52 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't heard the new Schoolboy Q album, but the production on Setbacks seems pretty slight compared to Section.80 to me. And Kendrick is a lot more charismatic and a better songwriter imo.

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Friday, 10 February 2012 02:44 (fourteen years ago)

the production on the new schoolboy is pretty cool and even tho i wouldn't agree i'd hear an argument that from that standpoint it trumps section.80, but in any other facet i think it's kendrick by a pretty large margin

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 February 2012 02:47 (fourteen years ago)

kendrick is just a much better songwriter... q hits on some good stuff on a few songs on the album but it's still pretty amateurish in a lot of places to me

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 February 2012 02:48 (fourteen years ago)

and not amateurish in a way that i guess i'm attracted to... just sorta skating by on 'vibe' and all that

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 February 2012 02:49 (fourteen years ago)

how was the production 'slight,' like what do you mean by that?

the production on section80 was kind of hokey to me in parts, v grandiose & all that

D-40, Friday, 10 February 2012 04:48 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i agree with that

diln (k3vin k.), Friday, 10 February 2012 04:49 (fourteen years ago)

yeah kendrick made some real corny choices on section.80 but i don't think it's a huge deal

J0rdan S., Friday, 10 February 2012 04:51 (fourteen years ago)

cosign n/a's post. otoh most of the music I listen to is dudes talking about who they're going to kill & with what gas-powered garden tool so glass houses I guess

haha

diln (k3vin k.), Friday, 10 February 2012 05:14 (fourteen years ago)

"And Kendrick is a lot more charismatic"

This is basically what it boils down to for me. His voice is v engaging/unique.

Having said this, SQ's new album is probably my favorite release so far this year.

yeah, likewise

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 10 February 2012 17:53 (fourteen years ago)

He reminds me SO MUCH (especially in the grain of his voice but even his flow) of a mid-'90s MC I used to listen to a lot that I cannot recall... I only had his stuff on some now long-lost mixtapes my buddy made me...

Clarke B., Friday, 10 February 2012 17:59 (fourteen years ago)

best thing i've heard from any of these dudes

flopson, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 07:13 (fourteen years ago)

I know I wasn't that hot on Setbacks, but Habits and Contradictions is awesome.

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 07:29 (fourteen years ago)

hella on board w/this

bear, bear, bear, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 07:32 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, love this album too. Really dig how expressive Q is, even most of his adlibs feel like the pitch and aesthetic has been just so carefully considered. And the production is sick pretty much top to bottom.

sleepingbag, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 07:33 (fourteen years ago)

good lookin to q on dodging xxl freshmen bullet

u wrong for this

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 07:45 (fourteen years ago)

The two albums strike me as both good and quite similar.

Tim F, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 07:50 (fourteen years ago)

xp ok you're right, the new album sux

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 07:56 (fourteen years ago)

god it feels like every rap thread i go in contains deej telling someone they're rong or their opinion is weird for enjoying rapper x or preferring album y

lex pretend, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 07:59 (fourteen years ago)

i also preferred habits & contradictions slightly, setbacks took a few listens to settle while H&C was pretty immediate

lex pretend, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:00 (fourteen years ago)

thats completely backwards though. sorry for telling you you're wrong but ... H&C is a much less immediate record

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:19 (fourteen years ago)

they're both good obv

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:20 (fourteen years ago)

but whatever makes you feel better about sleeping on the 1st one & justifying it in retrospect

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:20 (fourteen years ago)

people have different responses to music

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:26 (fourteen years ago)

sorry to blow your mind but

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:26 (fourteen years ago)

dog cmon. lex accusing me of this is clearly some kind of practical joke -- his entire argumentative style is 'i'm right you're wrong' so i just went w/ it here

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:29 (fourteen years ago)

but if you want to discuss the contents of the record, joints like 'kamikaze' and 'fantasy' have much more traditional pop sounds to them than pretty much anything on this record, which goes in a much more oblique / abstract direction, IMHO

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:30 (fourteen years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjOkdZVj98A

there's def more of a traditional, IMMEDIATE banger feel to these joints than the trippy kinetic weirdness of

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oYwf5y9DFg

thats not saying one is better than the other inherently, i just happened to prefer the former approach personally, although I like both records. I do have trouble understanding how you can hear the weirder approach of this record as being a step towards 'immediacy' though, or i'm at least going to need you guys to explain more clearly what you mean by that term b/c i think its kind of self-evident how the two records split along these lines

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:33 (fourteen years ago)

xp that may be my problem with them? both those sound pretty rote to me compared to what's on this album

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:34 (fourteen years ago)

what song you know sounds like 'fantasy'?? thats a completely unique & amazing track

D-40, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:35 (fourteen years ago)

i dunno what in particular, but it definitely has that "non-mainstream rapper makes begrudging and half-assed attempt at mainstream song" vibe that always has put me off, even if the particulars might be a bit different, and the hook falls stupid flat.

marissa explains it all (The Reverend), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 08:40 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah this was my feeling as well

new album out today--it felt like there was a weird lack of hype for this one, idk why.

mourning joe (voodoo chili), Friday, 26 April 2019 14:52 (seven years ago)

gave it a full listen this morning. feels low-stakes and fragmented compared to Blank Face. some good moments and cool production but weirdly unambitious. some grating hooks, too.

Simon H., Friday, 26 April 2019 14:57 (seven years ago)

yeah, i figured from the pre-released tracks that it wouldn't be as ambitious or eclectic as blank face, but whatever, every artist reserves the right to make minor works every once in a while.

mourning joe (voodoo chili), Friday, 26 April 2019 14:58 (seven years ago)

I don't think he's charming enough to coast through bang average material or something. what a disappointment :(

calzino, Friday, 26 April 2019 15:17 (seven years ago)

yeah, this is pretty listless, with a couple exceptions (5200, Numb Numb Juice, maybe the Cudi collab).
