Phibes Kartel (NickB), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:14 (fourteen years ago)

judging by the trax poll i'd guess we can also anticipate destroyer, ema, m83, gang gang dance, tune-yards, cass mccombs (whose album i've now heard after "county line" placed and i really like it!)

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:14 (fourteen years ago)

peaking lights better be in there

^^^oh yeah, i almost forgot.

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:16 (fourteen years ago)

Did Nicolas Jaar place yet?

Number None, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:16 (fourteen years ago)

No he didn't.

Tim Hecker is the only one of my votes that I'm quite sure of (nothing else has made it so far, boo hiss)

Phibes Kartel (NickB), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:17 (fourteen years ago)

Planningtorock and Iceage might be outside bets. Would love to see Julianna Barwick, but am braced for heartbraek.

Phibes Kartel (NickB), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:18 (fourteen years ago)

did ilx precovers lulu show up already? because thats prob a lock

Thu'um gang (jjjusten), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:20 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, that was on here already

Phibes Kartel (NickB), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:21 (fourteen years ago)

iirc i voted Julianna Barwick pretty high, and Phaedra was my #4

Cosmo Vitelli, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:25 (fourteen years ago)

there are two good songs on the cut copy album -- the first two iirc -- and then it falls off a cliff more or less

sucks cuz 'in ghost colours' is one of the best albums

loutallica is a lock for top 5

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:31 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think goon cru consensus is really what drove e-40 at this pt, he's certainly crossed over to the regular ilx crowd

idg why contenderizer thinks overtime shift is 'relatively weak' tho

#YOLO #NAMASTE (D-40), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:33 (fourteen years ago)

i'd say there's been a low goon cru impact on this list so far, not sure what's going to make it other than grandfathered in teflon artists like Quik & E-40

#YOLO #NAMASTE (D-40), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:34 (fourteen years ago)

anyway back to cut copy, 'hanging onto every heartbeat' and 'pyramids and pharoahes' are both >>>>> the first two tracks

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:43 (fourteen years ago)

Very pleased that Dawn Richard made the list, my number 2 choice. Top 40 feels a respectable outcome for a low-fi mixtape. Lamp OTM upthread, i feel there's something very modern (though not in a flashy or self-conscious manner) and unique about its stripped back rhythmic attack.

If Tropical 2 cracks top 20 I will be ridiculously pleased and smug.

Tim F, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:44 (fourteen years ago)

i'd say there's been a low goon cru impact on this list so far

yeah esp compared to last year. this also seems like the strongest outer zones influenced eoy list ilm has ever had?

i'd say there's been a low goon cru impact on this list so far

just piggybacking on lex's comment from tracks thread how lol it is that you take the time to chinstroke abt this but not to vote

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:48 (fourteen years ago)

dunno if there's less goon cru stuff per se

2010: gucci mane, curren$y, big krit, tyler the creator, rick ross, earl sweatshirt, e-40, waka flocka flame, diddy dirty money, yelawolf, kanye west, big boi (12)
2011: jay-z & kanye west, big krit, drake, danny brown, kendrick lamar, clams casino, death grips, araabmuzik, e-40, shabazz palaces (and at least dj quik to come) (11)

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:50 (fourteen years ago)

not already mentioned as possible top 20: Kurt Vile, Wild Beasts, Raphael Saadiq, Marsha Ambrosius (actually have no idea how popular she was here this year)

Cosmo Vitelli, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:51 (fourteen years ago)

my point wasnt that there was less rap but that the rap/tone of the list seemed much less interested in what the goon cru was championing last year. i think not having their own top w/e preceding this poll hurt w/ that

like death grips, clams casino, araabmuzik and kinda danny brown are the sort of indie rap stuff that i associate much more closely w/cassette label blogs and avant/weirdo posters than goon cru. did most goons even like these acts last year? and jay and kayne and drake are way more pop than goon i guess...

the parable is the parable of the (Lamp), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

didn't even know araabmuzik was considered hip hop personally

Full Frontal Newtity (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:57 (fourteen years ago)

i don't even know what the other rap posters even loved this year - it seems they spent much more time talking about stuff they didn't like but was being hyped. didn't feel there was much rallying around anything or enthusiasm à la WAKA, apart from like dj quik and e-40

my fav hip-hop came from unexpected directions in 2011, quik apart i don't think i'd heard of any of the rappers who made my favourite rap albums at the start of the year

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:58 (fourteen years ago)

Danny Brown has good standing amongst the goons.

yeah lamp is OTM & even the ones this year (quik. krit. e-40) that goon cru do like are ones that we had already championed in years past

part of it at least from my perspective is that for the most part my 'champion-ing' moved off-board & onto my blog & paid writing. I am a bit disappointed no one jumped onto boldy james, which i even made a thread for on the sandbox & thought would appeal as much to younger goons like brainwasher as old heads like m@tt

i think they do much better pop songwriting than most of the groups championed around here. i heard that wu lyf shit yall listen to in the lana del rey thread smh

#YOLO #NAMASTE (D-40), Thursday, 2 February 2012 00:11 (fourteen years ago)

"Better than Wu Lyf" is pretty fucked up in terms of faint praise

Yeah Yeah Bohney (Craigo Boingo), Thursday, 2 February 2012 00:12 (fourteen years ago)

As an outsider my possibly way-off-base sense of goon crew heavy hitters last year was basically Meek Mill, Don Trip & Starlito, maybe Schoolboy Q, maybe 2 Chainz, and Kendrick to the extent that he counts?

It didn't seem like there was much consensus past Meek though?

But I don't read the thread closely enough to say for sure.

Tim F, Thursday, 2 February 2012 00:13 (fourteen years ago)

judging by the trax poll i'd guess we can also anticipate destroyer, ema, m83, gang gang dance, tune-yards, cass mccombs (whose album i've now heard after "county line" placed and i really like it!)

glad you liked the album! did you listen to just wit's end or humor risk too?

call all destroyer, Thursday, 2 February 2012 00:14 (fourteen years ago)

i don't even know what the other rap posters even loved this year

i only follow the thread intermittently but my sense was stuff like meek mill, the step brothers tape, killer mike maybe freddie gibbs in addition to the stuff everyone else liked.

just wit's end so far - "knock upon the door" was probably the one i liked best after "county line". he uses space really well.

i should've voted for meek mill but i didn't think the tape was quite consistent enough to make my ballot.

yeah i've started to wonder -- not so much here but w/ popularity more generally -- if my timing on the piece was a little weird, b/c a lot of early adapters like to be a part of the story, but right after i raised awareness he almost stopped releasing new stuff, so people were waiting to hear new shit before cosigning & then nothing new came out

i dunno trying to figure out the 'logic' of artists going viral is probably a mugs game
