<3 MAUS. Though, uh, there's a spelling mistake in that album title up there.

i don't really get the maus hate either, i listened to that track that placed and it wasn't the kind of thing i nec want to hear more of but it wasn't offensive in any way

It's so weird. I rather like that Panda Bear album, but it feels like it came out years ago
― Flag post? I hardly knew her! (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 19:48 (fourteen years ago)
that john maus title is a bit jenny holzer

it's from Badiou (so i gather)
― rob, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 19:48 (fourteen years ago)
panda bear really does fucking suck though
that "would you buy music by a convicted murderer" thread - if they were convicted of murdering panda bear i would be morally obliged to buy theior products
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 19:49 (fourteen years ago)
the maus hate is tied up in whatever nonsense he gave in that pfork interview right?
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 February 2012 19:49 (fourteen years ago)
Maus was my #1, by the way. I'm not sure if it's the best album of the year, but it's the album I'll go the most bonkers nuts about defending. Lex, 'Hey Moon' is not the most representative track, though it is a highlight of the album. I doubt you'll dig it, to be honest, but I think it is wonderful.
― emil.y, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 19:49 (fourteen years ago)
i like 'person pitch' well enough and dude has some utter classics b/w his solo work & animal collective, but i didn't really like 'tomboy' at all
Maus rubs people up the wrong way with all the critical/ pomo theory and performance art stuff presumably? I can happily ignore all that.
― good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 19:49 (fourteen years ago)

― good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 19:50 (fourteen years ago)
I loved Person Pitch and liked the Panda Bear album before that, but didn't even listen to this one as his performance at Primavera was so horribly disappointing I couldn't really be arsed.
― emil.y, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 19:50 (fourteen years ago)
love that john maus LP, highly recommend checking out the 'streetlight' fan vid cut to the climactic scene from 'ms. 45.'
― omar little, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 19:52 (fourteen years ago)
Julia Holter was my #1, John Maus my #2. Holter I keep liking more and more. I can appreciate Maus is a pretty instant like/hate. I kind of dismissed '..Censors..' as too much like the later tracks on the last Ariel Pink at first, then it kind of grew its own identity more and more and I can barely hear that in it now.
― Yeah Yeah Bohney (Craigo Boingo), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 19:52 (fourteen years ago)
Voted for Tomboy. Clearly it's a less inviting listen than Person Pitch and it doesn't cover a whole lot of musical territory, but it hits a groove I really enjoy and stays there.

i didn't listen to it a ton but something about that panda bear record feels pretty sterile. i went back to 'afterburner' a few times though.

weird thing is i hate this in critics/writers but kinda love it in artists. i'm intrigued. sadly i am more focused on rebuilding my entire music collection from scratch than checking out new stuff this week :(
it makes me shudder to see panda bear's name in the same sentence as the phrase "utter classics". bad bad bad no-good worthless artist

John Maus is an outstanding songwriter... The expansiveness and grandeur of something like "Cop Killer" is just, WHOA--complete, evocative, stately, creepy, but subtle (I'm talking mood here, not lyrics obviously). Listen to "Cop Killer" and then listen to something by Girls or whoever; it's like, on every leve--melodically, mood-wise, texturally, Maus shows it up, makes it sound like a finger painting by a remedial student.
― Clarke B., Wednesday, 1 February 2012 19:55 (fourteen years ago)
the best part of seeing panda bear on the tomboy tour was watching sonic boom rip a joint on stage throughout the set

xp to Lex yeah I'd rather musicians spout off theoretical justification for their half-baked ideas than having... nothing.

not a hater in general, love john maus, just do not care for we must become.... nothing on it appeals to me half as much as "rights for gays", "the silent chorus", "my whole world's coming apart", etc.

yeah, fantastic mix obv
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:01 (fourteen years ago)
if i'd thought it was eligible i'd have voted for it top 5.
it's a mix by an LA duo, asma and daniel, that weaves r&b vocals through a bunch of awesome beats from zouk to house - very tactile and emotional, the beats and the vocals really respond to each other. you can get it here http://dismagazine.com/disco/mixes/14817/nguzunguzu-the-perfect-lullaby/
nguzunguzu were also responsible for my favourite club moment of 2011 - they played night slugs and it was a night of THE BEST VIBES EVER. nicki minaj on top of wiley's "ice rink", their own remix of ciara's "deuces", diddy dirty money's "sade" segued into a bounce remix of sade's "cherish the day"

thought it was obvious that this would place. this being ILX and all. expected it to place higher, tbf. didn't vote for it, but like it a lot (probably should have, in retrospect).

I keep seeing the name Nguzunguzu on ILM but have neglected to check it out. This looks interesting at least.
― John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:06 (fourteen years ago)
The Games thing was so much more enduring than 'Channel Pressure'. Enjoyed the instrumental version more than the vocal one.

oh awesome, Channel Pressure was in my top 5. wasn't sure if ilx was on it this hard

'channel pressure' is ok but there were so many other, better records that did the same thing out this year
this is a v zeitgeist-y list so far today tho p cool
