Death Grips would've been my #1 if I had voted.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:09 (fourteen years ago)

i don't like girls, but "vomit" is p great as it turns out. except for the part at the end with the backing vocals, that sucks. if they'd just repeated the dino jr. guitar solo, i'd have been way happier. it doesn't matter though because i don't like girls.

What's a good showcase track for dg?

guillotine and takyon are both ace

I think if they don't like the first 2 tracks they're not going like the rest of it.

curious what the real indie insiders are stanning over?

Depends what you mean. Indie rock, indie pop, DIY? Certainly not bloody Girls, anyway. Though a fair amount of trü indie people like Real Estate, I guess (not me).

emil.y, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:13 (fourteen years ago)

I just listened to some Girls songs. I wish they had more tension, more meat; it feels like they lack a center, like there's no "there" there. I mean, that song "Honey Bunny"? I almost literally cannot process how someone thinks it's aesthetically okay to just put a little surf-rock lick in there like that. It feels so wrong on some deep level that I cannot articulate. And a song "Die" with, you guessed it, "angry guitars"! I think these guys just think of the whole idea of Music way differently than I do, like it's some neat little macaroni sculpture you'd make in third grade and bring home to your folks.

Anything on Woodsist or not not fun

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not particularly "excited" by Real Estate, but I found myself returning to the album often enough that I ended up with a great affection for it.

jaymc, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

all this debate about girls and like 3 people talking about dawn richard ;_;

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:16 (fourteen years ago)

i prefer the real estate album that was on Woodsist to this years

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:16 (fourteen years ago)

death grips remind me of like dälek or something

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:17 (fourteen years ago)

I'm really enjoying this Andy Stott. Reminds me of Actress a bit?

polyphonic, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:17 (fourteen years ago)

lolol @ the idea of real estate being "for rap dorks"...p much all the rap dorks i know stan for Real Estate, though some of the older heads are all like "damn this this shit is weak i ride for O.G. shit like Let's Active and Aztec Camera"

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:18 (fourteen years ago)

Death Grips is the closest I've heard to the late, lamented (by me) New Kingdom.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

hadn't heard the dawn richards mixtape but just listened to 'vibrate' which was gr8

the emancipation of me-me (tpp), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

TAKYONNNNNNNN

Prince Rebus (donna rouge), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

'ex-military' was like my 6th or something?

Prince Rebus (donna rouge), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

a few friends who don't listen to rap tried to put me onto death grips and i ignored them accordingly. will give it a listen now ILM has spoken though.

the emancipation of me-me (tpp), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

i like "takyon" much much better than "guillotine" which i couldn't get through

a bit tooooo much like being trapped in a dank basement venue for me to maybe incorporate into my everyday listening but admirable i guess. good beats, unsure about being shouted at

he has a beard like rick ross who also shouts at me in an unenjoyable way

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

and yet i can't get enough of WAKA shouting at me

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

rick ross don't shout! baby, he make magic!

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

i voted for both death grips and dawn richard so p happy to see those place. the dawn richard mixtape has an even dumber name cuz i think its supposed to have a hashtag? idk. i dont know how much appeal this will have to ilm posters but its v v modern sounding to me w/o being 'futuristic' stuff like 'broken record' works really well in a number of contexts for e.g. or the way 'runway' is like part yuppie club fodder and part bratrap eyeroll

the death grips tape is just really badass

it was not so long ago that you were complaining about "fatass rick ross" ruining mariah m@tt!

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

I thought it was Nick Cannon who ruined Mariah

lamp you should hear the kalenna song

that mariah remix my the dream is pretty nice, except having big fatass rick ross on a track sort of diminishes it's "wonderful space ballad drifting thru space"-ness IMO.

no one has ruined mariah yet though :)

i bought the real estate record for my bf cuz its the exact kind of music he really likes and its really nice, idk, the guitars do sound really good and its appropriately sweet w/o being cloying. 'it's real' is a total jam

haha i know! i don't like love him or anything i just think it's funny how much you hate him, plus i do think he's gotten better...

though that said, i pretty much HATE guest rap verses in R&B I think that's the #1 that sucks about R&B

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:28 (fourteen years ago)

I think Death Grips is more of a live act than an album act, sort of like Lightning Bolt. I posted this in the DG thread already:

"Broken Record" is great, though the audio quality is weirdly lo-fi as mentioned upthread

rob, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:30 (fourteen years ago)

all this debate about girls and like 3 people talking about dawn richard ;_;

lol wah. in order to demonstrate to myself that i don't like girls, i just listened to "honey bunny". holy fuck that sucks. nadir of the happy happy beach party funtime shit indie garage ppl went nuts for when they got tired of "weird punk" c. 2008. modern lovers via lemonheads via something even more horrid.

dudes i already redacted the "rap dorks" thing. i shouldn't talk about music. i won't post anything else today.

ciderpress, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:35 (fourteen years ago)

real estate is pretty swell but i don't get excited over them. i can see why some folks would, though.

Plato’s The Cave In Claymation (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:40 (fourteen years ago)

Holy Ghost! is decent but I dunno, I don't think the quality holds up over the length of a full album.

two lights crew (seandalai), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

omg! about that mariah/Rick Ross post! Didn't M@tt post another thing right after that about being high on mushrooms & not being to enjoy it bcz some linebacker was relaying his sexual conquests right next to your ear? Or something like that? Those posts were awesome!

Drugs A. Money, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

n/a, 'member when Dalek rocked our cawlidge? I think I could get into this Death Grips stuff, although I don't necessarily hear the Dalek connection that much. Dalek was more immersive, wash-y, sloppier and thicker; Death Grips operates on a final-scene-of-Clockwork-Orange level of alertness, like a transmission from a scary land where there's no drugs and kids kill woodland creatures for fun instead.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:43 (fourteen years ago)

Re Real Estate: I like pretty much everything that's come out of the Mondanile/Woodsist axis but Days is just so boring, like they've turned the chillometer up to 11 and given up on motion entirely.

two lights crew (seandalai), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 18:44 (fourteen years ago)

Back in the good old days you could just rely on your A&R man to push you around in a grocery cart.
