It's good stuff, just way too long and relentless for me to have ever heard the entire thing in one listening. Queen Of Hearts was one of my favourite tunes of the year, the rest does pretty much the same thing in different ways.

what in the world does the soft bulletin have to do with that fucked up record?
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:11 (fourteen years ago)
seriously these vox are no different to all the hardcore vox i listened to in the 90s. What is so off-putting other than the fact you maybe dont dig hardcore? Contenderizer im surprised at you re the vox.
I really like this so far
xp
oh cool Real Estate!
― Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:11 (fourteen years ago)
Love love that Real Estate album too! We're on a great run here.

Days is such a great little jangle rock record.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:11 (fourteen years ago)
xxxpost Sorry, that was about Fucked Up, not Real Estate who I don't think I really understand yet.
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:11 (fourteen years ago)
this is p4k indie right?

also no one who listens to black metal gets to complain abt hardcore vox― the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown),
― the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown),
who was that aimed at?
Nothing really sticks out on Days (the cover is appropriate) but what a great vibe. I found myself listening to it three or four times in a row at work.
― skip, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:11 (fourteen years ago)
Hmm...have to say I dug the previous album but this was a big let-down ("It's Real") aside.
― two lights crew (seandalai), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:12 (fourteen years ago)
if it is Lex, p4k is improving.
― Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:12 (fourteen years ago)
yeah it doesn't 'feel' like a #1 album of the year, but i returned to it a ton, and it's so, so good at what it does that i just played it more than anything last year
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:12 (fourteen years ago)
This is Feelies worship indie.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:12 (fourteen years ago)
like that real estate record, it feels slight but i think jangle pop is kinda slight by nature
also no one who listens to black metal gets to complain abt hardcore vox

no one in particular, just cutting it off before it starts

Not a bad band to worship.
― skip, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:13 (fourteen years ago)
my gf totally stole days and stashed it in her car so i haven't gotten to listen to it nearly enough
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:13 (fourteen years ago)

― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:13 (fourteen years ago)
:)
i like this record, didn't make my ballot but the first few tracks are especially nice, and i love the hypnotic groove the last track settles into at the end
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:14 (fourteen years ago)
well i like the fucked up record so far so you cant say it about me.but BM vox are different to hardcore and clearly some prefer one to the other (or hate both)
― Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:15 (fourteen years ago)
Man, "Green Aisles" totally stands out for me, but the vibe on the whole record is fantastic.
― Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:15 (fourteen years ago)
I hope they explore the sound of that last cut a bit further. Really nice evolutionary step.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:15 (fourteen years ago)
but I really dont get the hatred for this guys voice at all.
― Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:16 (fourteen years ago)
The Real Estate is another one I voted for. Very monochromatic, but for this type of music that's a compliment. Sort of early REM meets Unrest meets Heavenly. Nails that wistful-happy-sad vibe perfectly.
― o. nate, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:16 (fourteen years ago)
this is dreadful. i'm trying "it's real" and it's just so aimless and feeble...sounds like it should be soundtracking a tv advert for a washing powder called nostalgia. oh look the video is basically a fucking instagram tint stretched out and they look like complete douches.
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:16 (fourteen years ago)
Im hoping Woods might place now. That would be great. Always disappointed they didn't make it in previous years.
― Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:17 (fourteen years ago)
If Lex doesn't like it it's bound to be good.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:17 (fourteen years ago)
haha lex you're always saying things like 'feeble'. You prefer strong and muscular music?
Listening to "It's Real." Sounds more swedish than jangle to me -- I imagine that if I listened to this 10 times I'd find it really dug into me, the way those Club 8 records do, but I'd have to listen to it 10 times to find out. "Slight" is about right.
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

i like fucked up but the whole thing of people marveling about OMG A SHOUTY HARDCORE BAND GOT A BONER FOR THE SOFT BULLETIN gets a bit much

have heard tons of hardcore vocals over the years (love john brannon, for instance), but 9 times out of ten, "hoarsely bellowing angryman" is not a sound i enjoy. at least not in recorded music - can def be cathartic live. i'm more a punk than a HC fan, and when i do like HC, i like it in small doses & with the tuff-guy shit dialed down.
dying crow style BM vocals are much easier for me to digest, probably because they seem more weird than belligerent - the he-man testosterone frenzy isn't such a factor.

Sort of early REM meets Unrest meets Heavenly.
Lacks the urgency of early REM and Unrest, lacks the amiable amateurishness of Unrest and Heavenly
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:19 (fourteen years ago)
Marling was my #1, btw. I don't prefer this LP to her previous one, but I do think it is more of a piece, and I like the darker route she's heading down lyrically. She's probably the most interesting young singer/songwriter around atm.
Also voted for the Tom Waits and Fucked Up.
There was one track on the Grouper album I was quite taken with, but the album didn't find a place on my ballot in the end. Couldn't really get into it.
― DavidM, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:20 (fourteen years ago)
i like slight records when they're very still, like phaedra or mirel wagner
slight jangly guitar pop is my idea of hell though to be fair
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:20 (fourteen years ago)
like that real estate record, it feels slight but i think jangle pop is kinda slight by natureno way. lots of music i love, i mean LOVE, could be classified as jangle pop: the feelies, the smiths, the whole sarah catalogue etc. but it does not feel slight by any means. it may feel bright or light but not slight. not sure about that real estate yet, the vibe is great but i am not sure about the quality of the songs.

this fucked up album is really good. Why didn't I hear it earlier. It just missed out in metal poll top 125 I think.
― Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:25 (fourteen years ago)
a fucked up album cannot be good, it can only be fucked up. which it is by the way. q.e.d.
― alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:27 (fourteen years ago)
it's just so aimless
so wrong.
My number 1. Based solely on the fact that it was by far the most-listened to album of 2011 for me. First few times it felt like 'nice vibes' and great for driving on late summer days etc....but somewhere around the fifth or sixth time "Municpality" and the final track started clicking and I began to like every individual track. I think it's too straightforward to be considered some sort of paragon of P4k indie. Tellingly my mother asked if it was "easy listening". Lovely stuff.
― encarta it (Gukbe), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:27 (fourteen years ago)
Guilty as charged, though for me it's more of an evening background music album. If I focus on it too much, it can become slightly annoying.

oh right there was a radiohead record this year
found King of Limbs dull. then again it took two years for me to come around to In Rainbows so...ya never know.
