There's a band in Atlanta called Groove Stain, which is hilarious and the worst name I have ever heard for a band EVER.

Prefab Sprout just recently graduated from being an Artist I've Written Off/Pointedly Ignored Because of Their Name to an Artist I Play Around Other People With Great Trepidation Due To Fear That They Will Ask Me Who It Is and I Will Have To Say Their Name Out Loud.

Missing or superfluous letters automatically put bands on this list for me these days. Just tired of it already.

It's so you can Google them isn't it?
― hurricane weather (forapper), Thursday, 30 August 2012 04:54 (thirteen years ago)
That makes sense. But then there are newish bands with names that seem to have been chosen deliberately to defy Google (e.g. The Men, Girls) that still come up as the #1 search result when you search for their name + "band". I don't know, I guess it's mostly in my head, but I tend to avoid bands that jump on what appear to be band name trends; like if you formed some time in the middle of the last decade and have the word "Wolf" in your name, you were written off/pointedly ignored.
It's the all caps-no vowels band names in particular these days that have been bugging me. But at least this thread exists so I can take comfort in knowing I'm not alone in being unfairly dismissive!

why not just call your band "Autopilot" (actually, that's a better name) or "Phoning It In"
king gizzard & the lizard wizard
then i happened to hear one of their tracks accidentally and it was great

Trying to sound literate by naming your band after an author probably 50% of middle schoolers read: C/D. Also, trying to imply that your shitty indie band is the musical equivalent of a sober, clear-eyed political critic and one of the greatest essayists of all time -- not only highly unlikely, but highly un rock-and-roll even if true.
― ₴HABΔZZ ¶IZZΔ (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 15:16 (twelve years ago)

I like the fact the next buzz band to come along was called "Temples". CHVRCHES are fine, name aside, though.
Dirty beaches.I mean seriously dude? Two ridiculously overused words in post - 00 band names..lets just mash em together!
I had assumed that it's a juvenile "dirty bitches" pun rather than evidence of an interest in marine conservation, given that's how about 75% of the world would say those words in English, but i may be wrong.

Similarly: Gatsby's American Dream
I feel like there were a few other bands in the mid '00s who were heavily influenced by their high school summer reading lists, but the only other examples I can think of right now are shitty local bands.

You were assigned Rilke in high school?
I don't think even yr absolute standards are always a bad idea to draw from, e.g. I like the names of both Rollerskate Skinny (Catcher in the Rye) and the Boo Radleys (To Kill a Mockingbird). But "The Orwells" is just so lumpen and ham-fisted.
― emil.y, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 16:18 (twelve years ago)
I agree, and those are great examples. But when done wrong it's just a sad disaster.

Although it's neither a truly bad name nor a truly bad band, I kind of knew exactly what Perfect Pussy was going to sound like, and I just recently confirmed it.
― ₴HABΔZZ ¶IZZΔ (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 22:32 (twelve years ago)
The Orwells are stillI IN middle school iirc so give em a break. Almost all band names are really stupid if you spend more than a few seconds thinking about them so I maximize efficiency by spending no more than 1.1 seconds. I have never gotten to the end of ...and you will know us by the trail??? but I assume the ending is satisfying
