independent music marketing publicity done properly

lamp u should take this band under yr wing
― lag∞n, Monday, 30 January 2012 17:33 (fourteen years ago)
Again, this is the myth of cream rising to the top. There's a bajillion bands out there. In most cases you're not going to hear about a band without someone doing something to promote them beyond just having a bandcamp page and playing dive bar shows.
ya but the idea that someone should hear your band instead of someone else's band - I mean this is something you are doing to help humanity, in the big picture it's basically a vanity thing. so it's not a total bummer people aren't gonna be using money for this.
― iatee, Monday, 30 January 2012 17:36 (fourteen years ago)
this is not something you are doing to help humanity*
― iatee, Monday, 30 January 2012 17:37 (fourteen years ago)
yes it is
― the parable is the parable of the (Lamp), Monday, 30 January 2012 17:40 (fourteen years ago)
music doesn't help humanity?
― Full Frontal Newtity (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 30 January 2012 17:40 (fourteen years ago)
no I mean hurting's band not your band
― iatee, Monday, 30 January 2012 17:40 (fourteen years ago)
also shakey's band
shakey's band does not help humanity
― iatee, Monday, 30 January 2012 17:41 (fourteen years ago)
oh good, glad we cleared that up
― Full Frontal Newtity (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 30 January 2012 17:41 (fourteen years ago)
playing in a band is def about helping humanity or least the subsection of humanity that covers total babes.
― the parable is the parable of the (Lamp), Monday, 30 January 2012 17:41 (fourteen years ago)
and helping i mean helping them get on yr dick

I think humanity is a lot better off because there have been a select group of artists that have been able to reach larger audiences, get money to continue working on their craft, etc. rather than just a free-for-all of terrible hobbyist bands.
― frogBaSeball (Hurting 2), Monday, 30 January 2012 17:42 (fourteen years ago)

― You got to ro-o-oll me and call me the tumblr whites (Phil D.), Monday, 30 January 2012 17:44 (fourteen years ago)
so you think that
1. people can only reach large audiences through marketing budgets and 2. there is some implicit contribution in social welfare going on here, it's not just like picking between different types of peanut butter
― iatee, Monday, 30 January 2012 17:44 (fourteen years ago)
there is a version of this band that lives next to me and have terrible parties all the time and wear plaid shirts everyday. the really love the black lips/keys. next time they are out smoking on our porch i will tell them to change their name to 'two lights' to 'make buzz' but i dont think god himself could change them
― the parable is the parable of the (Lamp), Monday, 30 January 2012 17:44 (fourteen years ago)
peanut butter has been great for humanity btw
― Full Frontal Newtity (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 30 January 2012 17:45 (fourteen years ago)
no I agree, peanut butter is great, I just don't think that peanut butter would be less great if jiffy spent less money on marketing
― iatee, Monday, 30 January 2012 17:46 (fourteen years ago)

feel like the guy on the right ruins the picture by not wearing a patterned undershirt to go with the others. i guess there's a pattern on his jacket lining but it's NOT ENOUGH

$100,00
― max, Monday, 30 January 2012 18:00 (fourteen years ago)
maybe the way they are dressed is for marketing tho. "Meet the members of Two Lights: Stripey, Necklace, and Birdshirt!"
― ban opinions (reddening), Monday, 30 January 2012 18:02 (fourteen years ago)
kinda silly to say that making good music isn't going to be a big help for the marketing
I've seen a ton of random opening bands and it always seems like the ones that I enjoyed were the ones I'd see discussed on ILX/making 2nd or 3rd albums (Holy Fuck, Man Man, and Future Islands come to mind)
― frogs you are the dumbest asshole (frogbs), Monday, 30 January 2012 18:02 (fourteen years ago)

Someone tell them they can buy Andre's pink champagne for around $5.

i'm just saying i don't think "cream rises to the top" is really a myth
― frogs you are the dumbest asshole (frogbs), Monday, 30 January 2012 18:05 (fourteen years ago)
especially since "word of mouth" is way more of a thing now in the age of endless internet discussion and RYM
― frogs you are the dumbest asshole (frogbs), Monday, 30 January 2012 18:06 (fourteen years ago)
i guess i go back and forth on it. half the time i hear something and think "that's amazing, why doesn't everybody know about this?", it ends up getting some shine sooner or later. but most everyone has friends or local artists that do great work and never get heard on a wide level.
― the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Monday, 30 January 2012 18:12 (fourteen years ago)
i mean, by definition you're only going to know about the cream that does in fact rise to the top, right?
― the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Monday, 30 January 2012 18:22 (fourteen years ago)
yeah but a. there's no universal definition of cream b. there's too much music made and people only care so much

Those bands are all on pretty decent-sized labels though!
― frogBaSeball (Hurting 2), Monday, 30 January 2012 18:24 (fourteen years ago)
And unknown bands rarely even get opening spots for name bands without some kind of manager/publicist/booking agent/label
― frogBaSeball (Hurting 2), Monday, 30 January 2012 18:26 (fourteen years ago)
maybe they will when publicists don't have jobs anymore
