i finally listened to that yesterday. would be a great album if it was by someone else!

I'm just waiting for the outloud crü to gain its rightful place as the alpha and omega of all crews.
If we rise to power too quickly, we'll fall as fast. Nurture it like a babby.

I can't actually seem to get in tonight, btw. My computer's being pissy about loading a few threads, even. Not sure what's going on.
― emil.y, Saturday, 28 January 2012 01:09 (fourteen years ago)
Emil.y super otm. I started actually talking to people this year! It showed in my (first ever) ballot.
― La Lechera, Saturday, 28 January 2012 01:09 (fourteen years ago)
I've been on ilx for 6 yrs btw.

I'm glad you became more chatty. You're cool.
― EZ Snappin, Saturday, 28 January 2012 01:18 (fourteen years ago)
I've come out out of my comfort burrito just to mess w/ ilx polls. Seriously though there may be more people like me than one would imagine.
― La Lechera, Saturday, 28 January 2012 01:23 (fourteen years ago)
where can you buy these comfort burritos
― donna rouge, Saturday, 28 January 2012 01:26 (fourteen years ago)
I think I posted once or twice a week for years
― mh, Saturday, 28 January 2012 01:28 (fourteen years ago)
don't remember anyone repping for invisible conga people, steffi, danny daze or jacques greene to a particularly massive extent on ilx
Yeah and this ties back to lex's comment upthread that a lot of the dance tracks here weren't really ones that the bobbins crew got that excited abut (though in honesty the bobbins crew's taste can be a bit stuffy and doctrinaire at times)
all of these except steffi got posted to the chillwave or avant threads i think so did the cheaters remix and walk and talk. id hesitate to cite this as c influential since like 5 ppl read those threads and its not like ital or maria minerva or any of what i thought were 'big' h1pster dance tracks made the countdown but its maybe interesting?
― Lamp, Saturday, 28 January 2012 01:32 (fourteen years ago)
"walk & talk" technically had its own thread all year:

― ⚓ (gr8080), Saturday, 28 January 2012 01:50 (fourteen years ago)
i think lamp has def been a much more influential tastemaker this year

I'm not a writer or musician and don't really post on ilm much, but I just wanted to say that these were among my favorite threads this year (along with the bobbins and individual trax threads), and they definitely influenced my voting.
― Dan S, Saturday, 28 January 2012 03:12 (fourteen years ago)
the goon influence def felt lighter on teh poll this year.
maybe if they, including YOU, had voted, this would not be the case. that would have been welcome actually.
there is no other ilx poster who makes such a big show of being unbothered to vote but who is so keen to dissect the results afterwards, is it a means of pre-emptively absolving yourself?
I sorta feel like one of the things that make this a very ILM-ish year is the way that a lot of the songs arguably exist in the overlapping bits of venn diagrams of groups and aesthetics
yup plus the crews are not distinct entities: most people on ilx have diverse tastes (fancy that) and will be in more than one crew, even if they're less vocal in some than others
Does Poptimism still do an end of year poll?
it's on freakytrig. can't be bothered to type out but the top two is the same. people appear to largely believe azealia banks to be a talented rapper, it seems
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Saturday, 28 January 2012 03:40 (fourteen years ago)
i honestly don't know how people can pay attention to each others' tastes as much as they do here, and i don't mean that in a snarky way (much). i can barely keep up with all the music i want to listen to, can't begin to try to follow what anyone else wants to me to listen to.
― markarles (some dude), Saturday, 28 January 2012 03:43 (fourteen years ago)
id say youre pretty far on the side of not really using ilx to find out about music compared to most ilxors

lol lex otm
that said,
i honestly don't know how people can pay attention to each others' tastes as much as they do here
certain posters are def tastemakers, and despite being a pain in the ass a lot of the time, deej is one of the best at tipping people off to shit both new and old
people appear to largely believe azealia banks to be a talented rapper, it seems
its a TRACKS poll not a BEST RAPPER poll
― ⚓ (gr8080), Saturday, 28 January 2012 04:26 (fourteen years ago)
Also remember the crews aren't monoliths. I voted for mostly dance stuff but was unfamiliar with half the dance stuff that placed. (I guess the dance folks might be at the extreme for fragmentation among themselves though, but such is the nature of the genre. I wouldn't be that surprised if the metallers are the same way.)
― lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Saturday, 28 January 2012 04:54 (fourteen years ago)
I think jaymc and deej and others are right that the results of the tracks polls have changed over the last few years, have become more eccentric and subjective...more uniquely ilm and less p4k/p&j-centric (and much more ecclectic and interesting). To me it seems like it's a not a result of separate cliques and fragmentation so much as increasing confidence and influence and interaction of multiple voices here from all ends of the spectrum – maybe because people have gotten to know each other better as the board evolves resulting in more amalgamation of distinct tastes? - that kind of shepherds the flow of energy on multiple levels/in diff spheres into unusual places, directing everybody to listen to new things. I think that explains a lot of what showed up in this year's tracks poll
― Dan S, Saturday, 28 January 2012 05:04 (fourteen years ago)
i use the time i wouldve devoted to polling every one of staind's studio albums
― Lamp, Saturday, 28 January 2012 05:07 (fourteen years ago)
yes, i also think that the poll results themselves are sort of pushing ILM to listen to/champion and ultimately vote for a wider array of stuff
― ⚓ (gr8080), Saturday, 28 January 2012 05:08 (fourteen years ago)
that was an xpost
most people on ilx have diverse tastes (fancy that) and will be in more than one crew, even if they're less vocal in some than others
I would wager that "most people on ilx" are not in any crews at all.
― jaymc, Saturday, 28 January 2012 06:20 (fourteen years ago)
they're in the biggest crew of all - the lurker crew
― Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 28 January 2012 06:54 (fourteen years ago)
"crews" are just people who have similar taste to each other, as one will naturally find if one posts on a music board for nearly a decade. there's nothing scary or untoward about the word
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Saturday, 28 January 2012 08:44 (fourteen years ago)

― guilt is a useless emoticon (D-40), Saturday, 28 January 2012 09:17 (fourteen years ago)
i don't feel like i'm fighting anything, isn't that jaymc?
jaymc i was wondering whether you'd rather the ILM list was more like P&J/P4K? b/c those lists certainly have inbuilt biases of their own that means they overlook a shit ton of amazing music. the ILM list has traditionally excelled at unearthing a lot of that. it's not designed to be a reassurance that you're still keeping up like you did when you were younger.
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Saturday, 28 January 2012 09:22 (fourteen years ago)
I didn't mean that the crews are all autonomous separate things (obv they aren't), more that to my mind the tracks themselves (as a conglomerate) more strongly reflected this porousness than in the last few years.
― Tim F, Saturday, 28 January 2012 11:59 (fourteen years ago)

thanks smartass but fwiw i meant i have limited time to listen to music or look for music to listen to, as opposed to ilx posting that i can kill lots of time with in situations where i can't necessarily listen to anything
― markarles (some dude), Saturday, 28 January 2012 12:14 (fourteen years ago)
i think it's at the top of the ballots thread BUT it is also woefully incomplete. if you listen on spotify, you don't get "sade", for instance. no "sade" no credibility
xp
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Saturday, 28 January 2012 12:15 (fourteen years ago)
lex when are you gonna stop being appalled that spotify doesn't have every song ever made
― markarles (some dude), Saturday, 28 January 2012 12:16 (fourteen years ago)
thanks lex - will look it out
guess a youtube playlist wd've been better
― banterdict cumberswag (cozen), Saturday, 28 January 2012 12:18 (fourteen years ago)
"Sade" weirdly wasn't on youtube for ages either but the plus side was it meant I discovered that amazing amateur video clip on vimeo.
― Tim F, Saturday, 28 January 2012 12:20 (fourteen years ago)
it's just concerning that people defaulting to spotify exclusively for music consumption effectively erases non-spotify songs from existence for them.
"sade" was weirdly absent from the internet last year for a song that was given away free. some people said the youtube i uploaded of it had been taken down but i can still watch it?
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Saturday, 28 January 2012 12:22 (fourteen years ago)
But seriously:
http://vimeo.com/28460433
― Tim F, Saturday, 28 January 2012 12:25 (fourteen years ago)
this has never been true for itunes or any other popular means of consuming music. if it was, "Sade" wouldn't have even placed in the poll. it's amazing and unprecedented that we even HAVE a way to so easily assemble and share a playlist of all the songs that placed in this poll, and you're just sitting around bitching that it's only 95% complete or whatever.
― markarles (some dude), Saturday, 28 January 2012 12:25 (fourteen years ago)
As some dude already pointed out, when has this ever been the case? There has never been a complete library, music store or archive anywhere offering all music. Your statement is entirely "glass is half empty", as Spotify is one of the most complete musical databases free to enter ever, and most likely it will only expand.
― future debts collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 28 January 2012 12:34 (fourteen years ago)
youtube is way more exhaustive! hardly anything missing, and easy to u/l yourself if it is.
isn't the trend towards more record labels pulling music off spotify cuz it's not economically beneficial for them? i know several smaller labels refuse to have anything to do with it.
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Saturday, 28 January 2012 12:37 (fourteen years ago)
there is TONS of music that is not on youtube
― markarles (some dude), Saturday, 28 January 2012 12:38 (fourteen years ago)
among a dozen other reasons why i would never use it as my primary vessel for listening to music
― markarles (some dude), Saturday, 28 January 2012 12:40 (fourteen years ago)
you can upload music easily to youtube though.
not that i use it ever either, shitty sound quality innit. i need mp3s! so i can put stuff on my ipod and listen on the go.

― pandemic, Saturday, 28 January 2012 12:52 (fourteen years ago)
Ultimately, no, I'd rather it not be like P&J/P4K. As I said before, I'm glad that the ILM list is different enough to expose me to music I wouldn't have otherwise heard.
If I'm looking for a reassurance at this point, it's a reassurance that I fit in on ILM, despite not self-identifying with any of the crews that are now apparently the chief organizing factor of social interaction on the board.
― jaymc, Saturday, 28 January 2012 14:41 (fourteen years ago)
The thing is, for all the talk of ILM's list being eclectic, it isn't really as eclectic as all that. Where is the modern jazz? Where is the classical? Where is the DIY punk? Where is the avant-garde? Where is the non-mainstream/major-label indie? And I'm sure the metal crew will be happy to point out - where is the metal? And for me, well, I'm asking, where is the J-Pop? Where is the experimental folk?
I know that a lot of these genres will be covered in the albums list, and I'm sure some people will argue that these genres are better suited to album-length format, but I don't think that's true of all of them at all.
