but i feel like rap right now -- maybe because it's getting less popular commercially -- is sorta going thru the same sorta method of hype that indie rock goes thru... like we may one day look back on asap rocky as the tapes n tapes or clap your hands say yeah of this period in rap music
this is interesting. do you think that rap's inbuilt fetishisation of success adds to this? or is that more pertinent to jay & kanye STILL being the #1 commercial rappers, people taking rick ross seriously etc

uh lex no offense but if there was ever an adult who seemed to be trying to hear music through the ears of a tween it's you
― markarles (some dude), Friday, 27 January 2012 12:37 (fourteen years ago)
i mean, Tyler is like the exact same age as Mac Miller and Azealia Banks and Slim Dunkin and Tyga or like Biggie when he dropped his first single. The only reason his age is important is because he's a 20 year old who actually acts like a 16 year old, like running around and falling down to freak people out and calling everyone faggot because he thinks its funny
― dave cool, Friday, 27 January 2012 13:25 (fourteen years ago)
tbf Azealia Banks seems like a bit of an idiot too

at least she makes decent music though

i only mean "212" really lol, i don't like anything else she's done this year (weirdly the second best thing i've heard from her is the thing she did over ladytron's "17" a few years ago)

?? w/lex or in general? i wasn't a hater of ross, but i thought he was p average at best but i listened to deeper than rap the other day and thought it was a great big sounding commercial crime boss type album

offtopic (kinda) but has it ever come out who ghostwrites for ross?
― the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 27 January 2012 20:38 (fourteen years ago)
don't think so. i kind of like that its a semi-obvious possibly untrue fact that everyone ignores, old-school performer-not-auteur style
― guilt is a useless emoticon (D-40), Friday, 27 January 2012 20:43 (fourteen years ago)
i find listening to music with a third person viewpoint or some sort of meta removal/"What do the fans and critical response teach us about this music" to be profoundly uninformative and masturbatory; judging any music by any other primary standard beyond "Do I like it" is just the worst and presuming that simply because you don't like it that anyone else's appreciation is based on ignorance/trendhopping/bad taste is just the second worst.

disagree with this. i think the extent to which ppl are interested in talking about strictly formal properties of music barring any social context is pretty limited. evidence: Rolling YouTube 2012 YouTube Non-Drama YouTube Rap YouTube Thread

― Number None, Friday, 27 January 2012 20:49 (fourteen years ago)
i dont think that's semi-obvious, don't feel like his raps would've been /that/ hard for early-ross to write
― flopson, Friday, 27 January 2012 20:50 (fourteen years ago)

^^, p much. i kinda couldn't be bothered wading through it but there was some weird rumouring on a forum about jay electronica drafting verses for jay on watch the throne, i couldn't really keep up. jay's verses are mostly cool old contempo-dad jay on that rec though so i don't think i believe it

How to Rap: Is ghost-writing for someone else harder?
Big Daddy Kane: For me, ghost-writing for someone else wasn’t hard, because if I did it in my style that’s pretty much something good for you, and doing it in someone else’s style, if they have a more simpler style then it makes my job easier, because now I ain’t got to think too complicated. For example, writing for Biz, it wasn’t really about having hot rhymes, it was about having something funny, Biz just wanted something funny to say. And with [Roxanne] Shanté I could try to pretty much put it in her flow, but really with Shanté she wanted to do what I liked doing, just basically being sarcastic and she is like the master of sarcasm. So basically I’d be sarcastic like I normally would, but just make it to fit a woman.

i'd really like to see an in-depth article on this but i guess there's kind of an omerta in place
― Number None, Friday, 27 January 2012 22:17 (fourteen years ago)
unless ross is really keeping someone under wraps, the only person i could see ghostwriting for him is gunplay... which maybe explains why he's still riding with MMG even tho they don't seem to care much about his career
but honestly ghostwriting speculation bores me just as much as beef speculation... to me it's entirely plausible that rick ross -- and whoever else -- just became better artists as time progressed. in 2006 people really wanted you to believe that gillie the kid ghostwrote for lil wayne, which now comes off as utterly absurd.
― J0rdan S., Friday, 27 January 2012 22:20 (fourteen years ago)
ghostwriting (and rhyme biting) has been going on since the dawn of the genre. Dunno if Kane really counts as "ghostwriting" since he's credited on those Biz records.
― Full Frontal Newtity (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 27 January 2012 22:22 (fourteen years ago)
there are bajillions of examples - Cube and D.O.C. wrote lyrics for everybody in NWA etc
I don't think it really matters in terms of judging quality, but it is interesting from a formal/nuts-n-bolts perspective
― Full Frontal Newtity (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 27 January 2012 22:23 (fourteen years ago)
yeah well i guess Jay-Z etc. isn't proper ghost writing cos he's credited but i just find it interesting to think about the actual process

when its like 8 ppl vs. 2 i tend to say 'goon approved' -- i don't like everything that is goon approved either, lots of goons were into odd future & i certainly wouldn't say boldy james was goon approved. this isn't about me pushing my taste on anyone, lex, but i think if you look through that thread you'll find considerably more ppl enthusiastic about 'rich forver' than dissing it

this is otm. ross doesn't have a ghostwriter, c'mon, even his good stuff is totally consistent (in terms of flow, tone, word choice, etc.) with his not good stuff. he wrote most of diddy's raps on LTTP and all that stuff has transparently obvious ross flows, so did the ghostwriter have a ghostwriter? makes no sense.
― markarles (some dude), Saturday, 28 January 2012 01:46 (fourteen years ago)
i think the answer to that would be, ross could have an exclusive ghostwriter, and puff hired him
but that does seem a bit farfetched.

Shocked/pleased to discover it's the latter. This is pretty good.
