why is it bad?

guilt is a useless emoticon (D-40), Thursday, 26 January 2012 20:45 (fourteen years ago)

hilarious top 2 given how much blood has been shed over multiple threads slamming both artists the past 2 months

flopson, Thursday, 26 January 2012 20:47 (fourteen years ago)

Fuck Azaelia Banks and haven't heard Video Games but fuck Lana del Ray too. Nicki and Beyonce are the rightful winners. HARRUMMMMMPH. *folds arms*

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 20:51 (fourteen years ago)

haha brilliant xpost

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 20:51 (fourteen years ago)

these are some garbage songs today huh

'ok' (Lamp), Thursday, 26 January 2012 20:52 (fourteen years ago)

the wayne verse is my least fav thing about my fav song of the year, but it's an OK loverman weezy verse with some good lines & a nice flow. i agree with deej that it's not bad. the humour/wordplay is unnecessary, i like new position/i put her on my plate and then i do the dishes but think a more earnest or romantic verse would have been more appropriate, turn that girl into a rainforest is dope but ...brainstormin just kills the mood

flopson, Thursday, 26 January 2012 20:52 (fourteen years ago)

Emeli Sande is practically 'Unfinished Sympathy Pt. 2' no?

Moka, Thursday, 26 January 2012 20:53 (fourteen years ago)

Emeli Sande is practically 'Unfinished Sympathy Pt. 2' no?

yup, which is why it's so awesome

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 20:54 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I'll allow it the world could use more unfinished sympathies.

yeah i don't really mind brainstorming, the do the dishes line is a little corny but 'hold her like a conversation' is a nice period on the verse i think.

guilt is a useless emoticon (D-40), Thursday, 26 January 2012 21:05 (fourteen years ago)

Update re Perfume's apparent double-placing: 194th place is actually "King Louie - Too Cool", must have been a c+p error on my part.

As you were!

CJ Fam Club (seandalai), Thursday, 26 January 2012 21:05 (fourteen years ago)

LBI: The "enthusiasm" score is the points total of a track divided by the maximum total it could have from the same number of voters.

CJ Fam Club (seandalai), Thursday, 26 January 2012 21:06 (fourteen years ago)

So Enthusiasm = 1.0 if all voters for a track had it as #1.

CJ Fam Club (seandalai), Thursday, 26 January 2012 21:07 (fourteen years ago)

Lack of Kush Groove itt is painful. Thought that was a lock.

SOPA/PILLA (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 26 January 2012 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

Like (and voted for #1 & #2, in that order), but from their other output, I'd be content to never hear another song from either.

The Blawan is my clear favorite from today's batch, and I could listen to that on repeat.

Plato’s The Cave In Claymation (Sanpaku), Thursday, 26 January 2012 21:11 (fourteen years ago)

lol @ us liking the opposite corny wayne lines

flopson, Thursday, 26 January 2012 21:13 (fourteen years ago)

i don't mind either of those corny wayne lines

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 21:27 (fourteen years ago)

this is my annual announcement when i say i haven't heard any of these songs -- though it's not quite true this year, i must have heard the tune-yards since i played the record once through, and i heard the wild flag once though i remember nothing about it, and i think i heard whatever destroyer song was the first single from kaputt, which might have been one of these two. "212" is nice, i enjoy not being able to figure out what it's trying to do.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 26 January 2012 21:30 (fourteen years ago)

I might not 'get' this whole Chicago Juke thing

it's really important that that kid sister remix doesn't stop you from checking out juke lol

handy ban (lou), Thursday, 26 January 2012 21:49 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks for explaining Sean!

JF, the images look even more spectacular when they're all on one page like that!

CJ Fam Club (seandalai), Thursday, 26 January 2012 22:12 (fourteen years ago)

tracks from 2011that i loved but didn't get nominated for the ILM Poll

⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 26 January 2012 22:13 (fourteen years ago)

great poll, discovered lots of stuff, the #1 is pretty good as was the todd terje, full attention, heaven, schoolin life and kaputt (i don't like dan bejar's voice neither but the excellent, intricate music somehow makes up for this). thanks johnny and seandalai! there were a couple of songs i voted for which placed in the end. besides the wilco - which is actually quite lame esp. compared to art of almost, it was destroyer's the laziest river, kate bush's snowflake, video games (a consensus choice). i am quite disappointed that james blake's the wilhelm scream did not make it into the top 77. where did it finish?

alex in mainhattan, Thursday, 26 January 2012 22:20 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks everyone who voted and posted on the thread this week. May sound nerdy, but this is exactly what I wanted to do on my birthday! The eoy polls are my favorite thing on ilm every year.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 January 2012 22:43 (fourteen years ago)

happy birthday jf!

too bad i didn't have a chance to watch results unfold live today buuuuuut the results were pretty fantastic so it's hard to complain

teledyldonix, Thursday, 26 January 2012 22:51 (fourteen years ago)

Great work Johnny (and happy birthday)!

I think a lot of these results (whether I or you or etc love or loathe any particular song in question) really capture a certain ILM aesthetic, not so much in terms of a particular style, sound or genre, but in terms of some kind of broader notion of pop music and music fandom.

This is a rare tracks list which really reflects a love of one-song-at-a-time listening, sharing and enthusing. The majority of the songs in the top ten make me immediately flash to the threads where that occurred.

Tim F, Thursday, 26 January 2012 22:53 (fourteen years ago)

happy birthday and great job JF!

donna rouge, Thursday, 26 January 2012 23:10 (fourteen years ago)

Just got back from dinner and drinks.

Just want to say, Happy Birthday Johnny and thanks so much! I'll miss you ILM's TOP 77 TRACKS of 2011...

MikoMcha, Thursday, 26 January 2012 23:28 (fourteen years ago)

Dude (gast! of: meid!) the album countdown is still on the way! :)

future debts collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 26 January 2012 23:33 (fourteen years ago)

Another nugget...at joint 443rd place we have the four tracks that got a #1 vote and nothing else:

443 Acid House Kings - Would You Say Stop? 50
443 The Crystal Ark - Touch 50
443 Emeli Sandé ft. Naughty Boy - Daddy 50
443 Innercity - untitled 7" 50

"Touch" was my #1 (sob).

CJ Fam Club (seandalai), Thursday, 26 January 2012 23:37 (fourteen years ago)

things i voted for today

EMA - "California"
first heard this through the video like Gucci Gucci and really think that's an essential component. too many good lines to count before the song drags at the end

BRITNEY SPEARS - "Till The World Ends"
voted for the remix, love the original too. rare jam that can get me excited for "whoa oh oh oh oh oh oh oh"

missed the cut

Motivation - weird lapse, i.o.u. Kelly. this should have been high on my list
Snooze 4 Love - whoa didn't even know this! thanks ilx!
Countdown - last one I cut; knew it didn't need any help, best video of the year
Super Bass - not really a fan of the chorus
Videogames - Blue Jeans is better because of the tempo shift in the third quarter
212 - sure why not

Cosmo Vitelli, Thursday, 26 January 2012 23:39 (fourteen years ago)

happy birthday Johnny!! the eoy poll is always my favorite time of year too, thanks for making it so awesome.

i'm a teensy bit surprised that no gaga songs placed in the top 77, but i guess the only song people generally coalesced around was "the edge of glory" and no one seemed, like, super-wowed.

wish "countdown" had made it to #1 though

ban opinions (reddening), Thursday, 26 January 2012 23:52 (fourteen years ago)

thank you so much, johnny and seandalai! and happy birthday Johnny. :)

what a difference delay makes (c sharp major), Thursday, 26 January 2012 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

Well, that was a lovely way to spend an evening; playing 1m30s-2m of each track as I skimmed the intervening comments... Thanks to living in a bunker called suburban mid-aged dadhood for the last year(s) I had actually never heard the top two. They're in the right order.

Michael Jones, Friday, 27 January 2012 00:24 (fourteen years ago)

even though i don't actually strongly dislike any of the singles or anything lady gaga's 2011 output was bullshit imo

flopson, Friday, 27 January 2012 00:25 (fourteen years ago)

images look amazing on one page!

if there's one thing i missed it was people piling in with run-downs of their thoughts on each song, i encourage that to happen b/c it was great last year to read them. anyone & everyone please

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Friday, 27 January 2012 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

Born This Way was my #1 of the year, yet I voted for none of its tracks.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 27 January 2012 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

no one agreed on which gaga songs were any good in the album thread so none of her songs placing isn't surprising. i liked a few on the album but i can't say they were huge losses to the poll. "scheiße" and "electric chapel" were pretty great.

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Friday, 27 January 2012 00:28 (fourteen years ago)

Lex, will be doing a rundown hopefully at the weekend. Too busy right now.

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Friday, 27 January 2012 00:34 (fourteen years ago)

terje should have been higher. and the lack of omar-s is totally baffling to me!

psychgawsple, Friday, 27 January 2012 00:43 (fourteen years ago)

no lex, i hadn't

i think it's interesting how much more personalized 'tastes' seem to be getting, to the point that this list actually represents a lot of tastes that reach a certain group of people on ilx & when the right ppl cosign it, they sort of pick up steam. i'm think of, like, the love for 'drums' of course, and 'sure thing,' probably some others here; i guess this has happened for awhile, you could say the early interest in gucci was fairly ilx-centric, at least as far as critics go. Because I haven't seen much critic / blog love for "sure thing" or "drums" outside of ilx

anyway, i like 'drums' but think 'sure thing' is just ok, so this isn't a diss or w/e, just ~thinkin baout things~

seems like critic taste is more fragmented & localized on this new internets, moreso this year than in year's past, or maybe that's just more my perception this year than in years past, but anyway thought it was interesting

― guilt is a useless emoticon (D-40), Thursday, January 26, 2012 3:38 PM (4 hours ago)

how does it make any sense to lump 'sure thing' in together with 'drums'? the former was a huge hit! i mean i'm laughing as much as you are at ppl who know every note of the weeknd and all the other fake r&b blog songs but are just now discovering shit that dominated r&b charts like 'sure thing' and 'motivation', but 'sure thing' placing this well seems like a small victory to me

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Friday, 27 January 2012 01:28 (fourteen years ago)

im talking about critics

guilt is a useless emoticon (D-40), Friday, 27 January 2012 01:34 (fourteen years ago)

sure thing & drums, from a critical perspective, are ILX-only phenomenons, as far as I'm aware

guilt is a useless emoticon (D-40), Friday, 27 January 2012 01:35 (fourteen years ago)

unless i missed like a stereogum piece on miguel or something

guilt is a useless emoticon (D-40), Friday, 27 January 2012 01:35 (fourteen years ago)

i mean, i'm not complaining about that, just observing that we can have our own little niche favorites from the pop charts or from the obscure reaches, it doesn't matter -- that i feel like that's happening more now, where small communities will pursue their own aesthetic preferences right into the wormhole so to speak

guilt is a useless emoticon (D-40), Friday, 27 January 2012 01:38 (fourteen years ago)

very glad I removed Video Games from my ballot at the last minute, there is no way that was the best song of 2011.

skip, Friday, 27 January 2012 01:44 (fourteen years ago)

2nd best.

⚓ (gr8080), Friday, 27 January 2012 01:55 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I thought about including "Video Games," said to myself "Nah, it doesn't need my help," and left it off.
