I love Superbass. It had been a while since a pop song grabbed my attention on first listen. I only overheard it on a bar the first time and found myself with the chorus stuck in my head all night. It's stupidly perfect.

like, say whatever you want about "Rolling In The Deep", but that song is about how he fucked up and how she's not taking him back; compare that to almost every song on Beyonce's album, which is all "if you asked me to, I would tear the skin off my legs and wear it like a coat, whatever you think is sexy"
and it's not even like I think that type of narrative is invalid or anything, but when it's so ridiculously prevalent with very few contrasting viewpoints, it's kind of wearying

When the credits roll on the imaginary film of my 2011 they should be playing Super Bass. So many happy memories of this song.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:47 (fourteen years ago)
well to be fair a human flesh coat might be the only kind of coat that jayz doesnt have yet
― blurgh (jjjusten), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:48 (fourteen years ago)
Super Bass has genuinely buoyed my spirits on multiple occasions.
― La Lechera, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:48 (fourteen years ago)
haha! xp
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:48 (fourteen years ago)
oh yeah and I do like "Super Bass" a lot but I think it ended up just missing my ballot
xp: lol
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:49 (fourteen years ago)
ha LL being one of my best space-metal pals, it's a distinct pleasure watching her be all happy about Kreayshawn/Beyonce/Nicki Minaj
― ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:49 (fourteen years ago)
Oh I hadn't even considered Adele is not placing at all in the poll. I guess I'm not the only one who finds her annoying. Or... is she really the second spot?
― Moka, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:49 (fourteen years ago)
how is super bass not at least top 2? hmph.
― Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:49 (fourteen years ago)
xp It was mentioned upthread that she finished at #78.
― jaymc, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:50 (fourteen years ago)
Super Bass seems kinda Katy Perry at first blush; that was my objection with it, and I wonder if that's also crut's stumbling block
naw it's not because it reminds me of Katy Perry(???). I just don't like the beat on "Super Bass," or the hook, or the rapping, or the anything really. I accept that this is a personal problem.
― crüt, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:50 (fourteen years ago)
It is kind of weird and gross that the Year Of The Woman was spearheaded by a bunch of songs about women bending over backwards to change themselves into whatever the guy they were chasing wanted
i don't see how this is the case for "super bass". nicki makes it clear that she's the one dictating stuff even as she's being swept off her feet. "yes i did, yes i did, somebody tell him who the eff i is - i am nicki minaj, i mack them dudes up, back coupes up and chuck the deuce up"
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:50 (fourteen years ago)
I don't really count "Super Bass" in that list
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:51 (fourteen years ago)
DJP, I fucking love you mate.
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:51 (fourteen years ago)
(tbh I was really still thinking about Beyonce and Lana Del Rey)
xp - hahaeveryone likes to have fun! even me.
― La Lechera, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:51 (fourteen years ago)
Also No Foster the Peephole or Radiohead? I am dissapoint.
Actually this poll was pretty much perfect ignoring about 10 songs that I have no idea what's so special about them.
― Moka, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:52 (fourteen years ago)
I don't think VG really counts in the same way the Beyonce one does either - it's not like she sounds super stoked about the limits of the relationship
― Simon H., Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:52 (fourteen years ago)
naw it's not because it reminds me of Katy Perry(???).
sorry it does have that cotton candy fluffiness in the chorus that I associate with "California Girls" or something...
― ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:52 (fourteen years ago)
smdh kmft rmde
Oh please, I gave COuntdown and Super Bass their dues and enjoy them both. No need to get so acronymious.
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:52 (fourteen years ago)
oh okay
i think "video games" does that but it's more nuanced than just presenting that as how things should be - the song kinda conveys how fucked-up that situation is too
and beyoncé spends half the album chastising her partner for not WORKING as hard as she does at the relationship
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:52 (fourteen years ago)
yeah i thought 'video games' was a tongue in cheek subversion of the trope you're talking about
maybe i'm just reading too far into it?
― ciderpress, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:52 (fourteen years ago)
if you asked me to, I would tear the skin off my legs and wear it like a coat, whatever you think is sexy"
looooooooooli would add "you you it's all about you everything i say and do you you you tootle oodle oodle ooo have i mentioned you you you you"
― La Lechera, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:53 (fourteen years ago)
i am honestly pretty shocked that this didnt end up as #1 countdown #2 superbass actually
― blurgh (jjjusten), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:54 (fourteen years ago)
I kind of love VG simply for the fake lyrics it has spawned.
― CJ Fam Club (seandalai), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:54 (fourteen years ago)
I like "California Gurls" btw
― crüt, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

yesssssssss, I'm really happy with this turnout

# 1 of '11: 1,111 points.
― jaymc, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:57 (fourteen years ago)
I'll just say Video Games is horrible based on the music alone, I've not participated in any dialogue about LDR, nor read any of it, or heard her interviews, or seen her perform on TV. It's just a vile performance and song.

tho a tie would be a hilarious option!
hahahaha my turning in a track ballot secured the win for 212 over that videogames horseshit

whooooooa
― donna rouge, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:58 (fourteen years ago)
212 was my No.2 of the year.
I actually would have voted for Video Games had the stellar Club Clique remix been nominated. The original is no great shakes. Could see myself voting for Born To Die this year, though.
― Mohombi Khush Hua (ShariVari), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:58 (fourteen years ago)
Yay, after a fairly barren 20 for me I voted for the top 2. 212 was a late addition for me so glad it won.

― La Lechera, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:58 (fourteen years ago)
paging deej and whiney - their hatred of az banks was HILARIOUS
secret of "212": the whole "ayooo" section acts as a massive break, meaning that WHATCHU GON DO WHEN I APPEAR absolutely slays on a dancefloor
also u&k: derrick carter's 212 vs bhq bootleg: http://soundcloud.com/blucu/212-vs-bhq-mp3

― johnny crunch, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:58 (fourteen years ago)
lol i'd have given AZ a bunch more points than LDR
my number 1 didn't place at all. good results btw. Snooze is great. I voted for Lana, though it was pretty low on my ballot iirc. Good song.
