I love Superbass. It had been a while since a pop song grabbed my attention on first listen. I only overheard it on a bar the first time and found myself with the chorus stuck in my head all night. It's stupidly perfect.

like, say whatever you want about "Rolling In The Deep", but that song is about how he fucked up and how she's not taking him back; compare that to almost every song on Beyonce's album, which is all "if you asked me to, I would tear the skin off my legs and wear it like a coat, whatever you think is sexy"

and it's not even like I think that type of narrative is invalid or anything, but when it's so ridiculously prevalent with very few contrasting viewpoints, it's kind of wearying

When the credits roll on the imaginary film of my 2011 they should be playing Super Bass. So many happy memories of this song.

Super Bass seems kinda Katy Perry at first blush; that was my objection with it, and I wonder if that's also crut's stumbling block

naw it's not because it reminds me of Katy Perry(???). I just don't like the beat on "Super Bass," or the hook, or the rapping, or the anything really. I accept that this is a personal problem.

It is kind of weird and gross that the Year Of The Woman was spearheaded by a bunch of songs about women bending over backwards to change themselves into whatever the guy they were chasing wanted

i don't see how this is the case for "super bass". nicki makes it clear that she's the one dictating stuff even as she's being swept off her feet. "yes i did, yes i did, somebody tell him who the eff i is - i am nicki minaj, i mack them dudes up, back coupes up and chuck the deuce up"

Actually this poll was pretty much perfect ignoring about 10 songs that I have no idea what's so special about them.

I don't think VG really counts in the same way the Beyonce one does either - it's not like she sounds super stoked about the limits of the relationship

i think "video games" does that but it's more nuanced than just presenting that as how things should be - the song kinda conveys how fucked-up that situation is too

I actually would have voted for Video Games had the stellar Club Clique remix been nominated. The original is no great shakes. Could see myself voting for Born To Die this year, though.
