still don't get what's so great about this song

crüt, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:40 (fourteen years ago)

Glad Azealia and Lana are gonna be at the top. Mostly because I've heard of and voted for these records. And also cos they're new artists.

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:41 (fourteen years ago)

those are the actual lyrics xp

CJ Fam Club (seandalai), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:41 (fourteen years ago)

can't imagine listening to those verses and not just grinning from ear to ear

uberweiss, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:41 (fourteen years ago)

xp kind of feel like what's great about this song is EVERYTHING ABOUT IT and if you don't get that there's nothing that can be said to you to make you get it

DO NOT CALL (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

1,023 points would have won last year's poll btw (admittedly we had a few more voters this time)

CJ Fam Club (seandalai), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

i love how t-swift repped for it before it became big

wasn't this the thing that actually kickstarted it being big? as nicki herself has said. it was certainly v impt

the t-swift/nicki "super bass" duet was so perfect.

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

how is this "amazing"?

― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP)

That she felt the viral aftermath of that contribution was so big that she basically gave her credit for its success.

abcfsk, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:43 (fourteen years ago)

what's great about it: it's HARD AS FUCK and it's also BUBBLEGUM CANDY SWOON and it is all about having a massive crush on an amazing person and how that makes you feel even more of yourself and also totally powerless ALL IN ONE SONG

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:43 (fourteen years ago)

It is kind of weird and gross that the Year Of The Woman was spearheaded by a bunch of songs about women bending over backwards to change themselves into whatever the guy they were chasing wanted... and Azealia Banks talking about cunts

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:43 (fourteen years ago)

bonus points: seeing nicki having to pretend that one of the lines isn't "he might sell coke" whenever she performed it in front of kids or mainstream audiences

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:44 (fourteen years ago)

it's only flaw is its bridge but w/e everything else is so unfuckwithable and the greatest example of public pop in years that I can overlook it.

prolego, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:44 (fourteen years ago)

yeah I'm liking both Super Bass and Countdown way more than when I did my traxx ballot; def kind of wishing I put them on there

ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:45 (fourteen years ago)

well with countdown and super bass placing i guess i just saw my last two to make it

blurgh (jjjusten), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:45 (fourteen years ago)

also "and yes you'll get slapped if you lookin ho"! xp

donna rouge, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:45 (fourteen years ago)

it's HARD AS FUCK and it's also BUBBLEGUM CANDY SWOON

Yeah, that's a powerful combination.

jaymc, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:45 (fourteen years ago)

Super Bass seems kinda Katy Perry at first blush; that was my objection with it, and I wonder if that's also crut's stumbling block

ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:45 (fourteen years ago)

^^ this

bitch you ain't no barbie
i see you work at arby's
video gaaaaames

La Lechera, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:46 (fourteen years ago)

what lex and jaymc said is why the bridge works for me

rob, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:46 (fourteen years ago)

oops that was for this

it's HARD AS FUCK and it's also BUBBLEGUM CANDY SWOON

Yeah, that's a powerful combination.

La Lechera, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:46 (fourteen years ago)

nothing wrong with selling coca-cola, soda jerk is respectable employment

the star of many snuff films (Edward III), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:46 (fourteen years ago)

I love Superbass. It had been a while since a pop song grabbed my attention on first listen. I only overheard it on a bar the first time and found myself with the chorus stuck in my head all night. It's stupidly perfect.

Moka, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:47 (fourteen years ago)

like, say whatever you want about "Rolling In The Deep", but that song is about how he fucked up and how she's not taking him back; compare that to almost every song on Beyonce's album, which is all "if you asked me to, I would tear the skin off my legs and wear it like a coat, whatever you think is sexy"

and it's not even like I think that type of narrative is invalid or anything, but when it's so ridiculously prevalent with very few contrasting viewpoints, it's kind of wearying

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:47 (fourteen years ago)

When the credits roll on the imaginary film of my 2011 they should be playing Super Bass. So many happy memories of this song.

Matt DC, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:47 (fourteen years ago)

well to be fair a human flesh coat might be the only kind of coat that jayz doesnt have yet

blurgh (jjjusten), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

Super Bass has genuinely buoyed my spirits on multiple occasions.

La Lechera, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

haha! xp

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah and I do like "Super Bass" a lot but I think it ended up just missing my ballot

xp: lol

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:49 (fourteen years ago)

ha LL being one of my best space-metal pals, it's a distinct pleasure watching her be all happy about Kreayshawn/Beyonce/Nicki Minaj

ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:49 (fourteen years ago)

Oh I hadn't even considered Adele is not placing at all in the poll. I guess I'm not the only one who finds her annoying. Or... is she really the second spot?

Moka, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:49 (fourteen years ago)

how is super bass not at least top 2? hmph.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:49 (fourteen years ago)

xp It was mentioned upthread that she finished at #78.

jaymc, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:50 (fourteen years ago)

Super Bass seems kinda Katy Perry at first blush; that was my objection with it, and I wonder if that's also crut's stumbling block

naw it's not because it reminds me of Katy Perry(???). I just don't like the beat on "Super Bass," or the hook, or the rapping, or the anything really. I accept that this is a personal problem.

crüt, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:50 (fourteen years ago)

It is kind of weird and gross that the Year Of The Woman was spearheaded by a bunch of songs about women bending over backwards to change themselves into whatever the guy they were chasing wanted

i don't see how this is the case for "super bass". nicki makes it clear that she's the one dictating stuff even as she's being swept off her feet. "yes i did, yes i did, somebody tell him who the eff i is - i am nicki minaj, i mack them dudes up, back coupes up and chuck the deuce up"

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:50 (fourteen years ago)

I don't really count "Super Bass" in that list

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:51 (fourteen years ago)

like, say whatever you want about "Rolling In The Deep", but that song is about how he fucked up and how she's not taking him back; compare that to almost every song on Beyonce's album, which is all "if you asked me to, I would tear the skin off my legs and wear it like a coat, whatever you think is sexy"

DJP, I fucking love you mate.

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:51 (fourteen years ago)

(tbh I was really still thinking about Beyonce and Lana Del Rey)

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:51 (fourteen years ago)

xp - haha
everyone likes to have fun! even me.

La Lechera, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:51 (fourteen years ago)

Also No Foster the Peephole or Radiohead? I am dissapoint.

Actually this poll was pretty much perfect ignoring about 10 songs that I have no idea what's so special about them.

Moka, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think VG really counts in the same way the Beyonce one does either - it's not like she sounds super stoked about the limits of the relationship

Simon H., Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

naw it's not because it reminds me of Katy Perry(???).

sorry it does have that cotton candy fluffiness in the chorus that I associate with "California Girls" or something...

ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

Oh please, I gave COuntdown and Super Bass their dues and enjoy them both. No need to get so acronymious.

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

oh okay

i think "video games" does that but it's more nuanced than just presenting that as how things should be - the song kinda conveys how fucked-up that situation is too

and beyoncé spends half the album chastising her partner for not WORKING as hard as she does at the relationship

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i thought 'video games' was a tongue in cheek subversion of the trope you're talking about

maybe i'm just reading too far into it?

ciderpress, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

if you asked me to, I would tear the skin off my legs and wear it like a coat, whatever you think is sexy"

looooooooool
i would add "you you it's all about you everything i say and do you you you tootle oodle oodle ooo have i mentioned you you you you"

La Lechera, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:53 (fourteen years ago)

i am honestly pretty shocked that this didnt end up as #1 countdown #2 superbass actually

blurgh (jjjusten), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

I kind of love VG simply for the fake lyrics it has spawned.

CJ Fam Club (seandalai), Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

I like "California Gurls" btw

crüt, Thursday, 26 January 2012 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

#1 is gonna be "Junior Dad"
