i might like humor risk a bit more overall but county line is the best song on either.
his albums are really song collections and not tied by anything thematic or otherwise--best to try em both and pick and choose what you like.

All the Cass McCombs I need comes in his first two albums (A, Prefection) and the track "That's That" from Dropping the Writ. Everything else is zzzzz.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:13 (fourteen years ago)
also catacombs has a couple tunes that are as melodically pretty as this one.
He explained: "Wit's End was started years ago and it slowly made its way to the finish line. Humor Risk was just punched out. They're friends but they're different. Wit's End is like a stew; Humor Risk is the raw food diet."
this reminds me of how tori amos talks about her albums. another + point. i really really like "county line"!
this list has given me 4 pretty excellent new discoveries so far :)

guys, in many ways the Gus Gus connection is actually the stronger of the two I mentioned:

Dia De Los Muertos seemed liek a running theme for a lot of things in 2011. I also don't know if this has always been a thing or if only because we hosted a DDLM-style halloween night this year.
Could be like a more traditional cultural spin-off of the whole baffling (to me) zombie infatuation in recent years.
― John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:15 (fourteen years ago)
what's baffling about zombies?
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:16 (fourteen years ago)
I think it's replacing native American attire as the go-to visual/cultural fad.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:16 (fourteen years ago)
you lot are quite easily baffled, i dunno..
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:17 (fourteen years ago)
The song is okay. I don't think I'd want to hear it again, but I could imagine it slowly sink its roots into my brain if I heard it repeatedly, to the point that I'd like it. But no motivation to reach that point.
― John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:17 (fourteen years ago)
Dia De Los Muertos does look pretty amazing though, and the skulls and things are badass without being goth.
"What I've Lost", "County Line" - both new to me, good discoveries (and by far the better Benoit & Sergio track). Plus I voted for "Heaven", so things are picking up again after a disappointing run.
― mike t-diva, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:17 (fourteen years ago)
oh cool "county line" was my #1

― ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:18 (fourteen years ago)
haha in what universe is Dia De Los Muertos not totally fucking goth? all those vibrant colors become even more intense when put in a black room filled with incense
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:18 (fourteen years ago)
Maybe I am quite easily baffled, but this zombie thing has been a big deal for several years now and I don't see what's so fascinating about zombies enough to sustain that kind of fad.
― John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:18 (fourteen years ago)
couldn't get that into the album, but "county line" is really, really fantastic
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:19 (fourteen years ago)

don't really like the singer on that gus gus song but it's a good pick if i want to hear someone jam on a fender rhodes.

A fad that's been going on since 1932?
yeah this whole skulls spooky colorful wounded sexy birdie thing is not working for me, but i chalk it up to me being kind of past the expiration date for caring about stuff like that. i like don't give a fuck confidence a lot more as a theme, usually.
― La Lechera, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:21 (fourteen years ago)
"County Line" reminds me of something I can't put my finger on, but it's not "Wicked Game."

"Wichita Lineman"?

Generally zombie movies are less about the zombies, and more about (ooh!), the monster in us all.

"County Line" was my #1, which shocked the hell out of me considering I don't like anything else he's done, but it's so assured about its tone and mood. Plus I'm a sucker for songs about places, and this just kept resonating for me throughout the year. xps

Blawan placing high, huh? I'm not entirely sure if I've heard this partic one.

The world needs more disembodied Jacko house, clearly.
hey i placed another one!
― blurgh (jjjusten), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:23 (fourteen years ago)
Ironic title.
ah here we are
sounds basic when you first here it but it's a massive massive banger, just really intensely physical to dance to. also a great workout track.
i kind of love that brandy samples popped up EVERYWHERE last year. hopefully this means her much-anticipated comeback next year will be as big a fucking deal as it should be
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:23 (fourteen years ago)
There's been a major upsurge in zombie-themed everything over the past ten to fifteen years. To me it's pretty obvious. I don't have any stats to back it up with or anything though. Obviously zombies aren't completely new, and it would be more accurate to talk about it in cyclical terms, I guess.
― John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:24 (fourteen years ago)
finally the dreariness comes to an end

this was one of the highest placing dance tracks in eg p&j - that surprised me then so this doesn't now

I don't think I heard this one in my information gathering for the poll but I like it so far.
― John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:26 (fourteen years ago)
This is a good track but it doesn't really hit LOVE buttons for me, I don't know why (actually, I think I do know why; I am super super super SUPER burned out on this particular Brandy song and could happily never hear it again in any form, so no matter how stompy the track underneath it I still have this vague sense of being annoyed when listening to this)
