ha I thought County Line was going to be some country song I'd been listening to all year but didnt know the name of

lol the first things that came to mind from the Cass McCombs song were Chris Isaak's "Wicked Games" and Gus Gus's "Why", both of which I like a hell of a lot more

The apparent ILM popularity of this song is pretty baffling to me.

to be fair you hadn't heard OF "countdown" and "super bass" so...

i know who cass mccombs is (was recommended him years ago but don't think i ever got round to it) but didn't know people were being impressed by him this year, but...listening now, i can kinda see why this has placed highly. real strong sense of mood and melody - really like the sparseness of it. was it off an album?

This is at least the third recent video I've watched with a heavy dose of Mexican imagery (and I'm not counting Intentalo or stuff like that). Is this some sort of trend? Dia de los Muertos, Aztec (or other Native American) dancing, etc. Maybe it just jumps out at me because of my new(ish) location?

Love that Wicked Games is such a touchstone now.

xp Same here. I don't know what the hell's going on with this rundown, but in a good way. I love that the only stuff that gets a real beating - EMA, Wilco, Tyler - would be solid uncontroversial choices anywhere else.

Dia De Los Muertos seemed liek a running theme for a lot of things in 2011. I also don't know if this has always been a thing or if only because we hosted a DDLM-style halloween night this year.

i might like humor risk a bit more overall but county line is the best song on either.

his albums are really song collections and not tied by anything thematic or otherwise--best to try em both and pick and choose what you like.

All the Cass McCombs I need comes in his first two albums (A, Prefection) and the track "That's That" from Dropping the Writ. Everything else is zzzzz.

also catacombs has a couple tunes that are as melodically pretty as this one.

He explained: "Wit's End was started years ago and it slowly made its way to the finish line. Humor Risk was just punched out. They're friends but they're different. Wit's End is like a stew; Humor Risk is the raw food diet."

this reminds me of how tori amos talks about her albums. another + point. i really really like "county line"!

this list has given me 4 pretty excellent new discoveries so far :)

Could be like a more traditional cultural spin-off of the whole baffling (to me) zombie infatuation in recent years.

I think it's replacing native American attire as the go-to visual/cultural fad.

The song is okay. I don't think I'd want to hear it again, but I could imagine it slowly sink its roots into my brain if I heard it repeatedly, to the point that I'd like it. But no motivation to reach that point.

Dia De Los Muertos does look pretty amazing though, and the skulls and things are badass without being goth.

"What I've Lost", "County Line" - both new to me, good discoveries (and by far the better Benoit & Sergio track). Plus I voted for "Heaven", so things are picking up again after a disappointing run.

yeah this whole skulls spooky colorful wounded sexy birdie thing is not working for me, but i chalk it up to me being kind of past the expiration date for caring about stuff like that. i like don't give a fuck confidence a lot more as a theme, usually.

"County Line" was my #1, which shocked the hell out of me considering I don't like anything else he's done, but it's so assured about its tone and mood. Plus I'm a sucker for songs about places, and this just kept resonating for me throughout the year. xps
