iow Alex in Montreal otm

ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:00 (fourteen years ago)

it feels so heavily medicated, like she's singing it through this drugged-out fug in the corner of a club

i thought your entire argument against the weeknd was based on hating exactly this

jojo commits to an emotion and is also in a club, not her bedroom. idk she just paints a way more specific emotional picture

I don't hear posing in JoJo's version at all. she sounds vulnerable and hurt

otm - also mixed-up and a bit drunk too, though, which lends itself to things like the sexting line that la lechera might have interpreted as posing? she's playing the crazed ex-gf here but also creating a character the listener sympathises with

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:00 (fourteen years ago)

The Jhene one is good also. It just felt less confrontational and more needy to my ears. But also a highlight.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

I dunno, I guess I just hear someone who has nothing better to do with her time than lie around in a fug and sing about boys. I just think it's kinda lame, I dunno. I don't hate it or anything. Just not interesting to me personally.

La Lechera, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

call all destroyer, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:02 (fourteen years ago)

well i mean its a break up song (xp to LL)

ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:02 (fourteen years ago)

the closest i have gotten to placing a track today was voting for a different tyler song.

blurgh (jjjusten), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:02 (fourteen years ago)

which one jjj?

pandemic, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:03 (fourteen years ago)

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:04 (fourteen years ago)

Cass used to be p awesome, but idg him now.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

man it's funny
the drake version is the worst song i have ever heard
while the jojo version is, in fact, the greatest song i have ever heard

nathey, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

what the fuck are all these songs? I don't think I've heard anything in the last 5-6 tracks...

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

anyways Alex I thought the confrontational stuff in the Jojo was kind of rmde (though again surprising for coming from someone I had previously pigeonholed as teenpop) basically, I think Jhene's Marvin was basically my token Weeknd-ish Bukowski-soul song from this year

ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

i could not make it through that song

La Lechera, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:06 (fourteen years ago)

just goes to show how sprawling ILM can be... considering I'm on the music threads each day, every day and I don't recognise probably about 50% of the stuff in this rundown...

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:06 (fourteen years ago)

ha I thought County Line was going to be some country song I'd been listening to all year but didnt know the name of

ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:07 (fourteen years ago)

lol the first things that came to mind from the Cass McCombs song were Chris Isaak's "Wicked Games" and Gus Gus's "Why", both of which I like a hell of a lot more

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:07 (fourteen years ago)

The apparent ILM popularity of this song is pretty baffling to me.

CJ Fam Club (seandalai), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

yeah this kinda sounds like it might be "Hollywood sadcore"

ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

nothing much Hollywood about it IMO?

Simon H., Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:09 (fourteen years ago)

what the fuck are all these songs? I don't think I've heard anything in the last 5-6 tracks...

to be fair you hadn't heard OF "countdown" and "super bass" so...

i know who cass mccombs is (was recommended him years ago but don't think i ever got round to it) but didn't know people were being impressed by him this year, but...listening now, i can kinda see why this has placed highly. real strong sense of mood and melody - really like the sparseness of it. was it off an album?

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:09 (fourteen years ago)

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you...the gangsta Glenn Campbell

ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:09 (fourteen years ago)

xp just lol-ing Simon

ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:09 (fourteen years ago)

Chris Isaak's "Wicked Games"

heh, an alt country "wicked games", that explains why i'm liking it

("wicked games" is one of the best songs everrrr obv)

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

From the album Wit's End. xps

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

nathey, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

lex tread carefully.....most of cass's stuff is....not like this

call all destroyer, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

This is at least the third recent video I've watched with a heavy dose of Mexican imagery (and I'm not counting Intentalo or stuff like that). Is this some sort of trend? Dia de los Muertos, Aztec (or other Native American) dancing, etc. Maybe it just jumps out at me because of my new(ish) location?

John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

but he is wonderful so i hope you enjoy

call all destroyer, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

is the album recommended? i see he released two this year...

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

Love that Wicked Games is such a touchstone now.

xp Same here. I don't know what the hell's going on with this rundown, but in a good way. I love that the only stuff that gets a real beating - EMA, Wilco, Tyler - would be solid uncontroversial choices anywhere else.

Meme Rogers (DL), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:12 (fourteen years ago)

this is definitely the best track from that album, by far

Dia De Los Muertos seemed liek a running theme for a lot of things in 2011. I also don't know if this has always been a thing or if only because we hosted a DDLM-style halloween night this year.

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:12 (fourteen years ago)

i might like humor risk a bit more overall but county line is the best song on either.

his albums are really song collections and not tied by anything thematic or otherwise--best to try em both and pick and choose what you like.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

All the Cass McCombs I need comes in his first two albums (A, Prefection) and the track "That's That" from Dropping the Writ. Everything else is zzzzz.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

also catacombs has a couple tunes that are as melodically pretty as this one.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

He explained: "Wit's End was started years ago and it slowly made its way to the finish line. Humor Risk was just punched out. They're friends but they're different. Wit's End is like a stew; Humor Risk is the raw food diet."

this reminds me of how tori amos talks about her albums. another + point. i really really like "county line"!

this list has given me 4 pretty excellent new discoveries so far :)

guys, in many ways the Gus Gus connection is actually the stronger of the two I mentioned:

Could be like a more traditional cultural spin-off of the whole baffling (to me) zombie infatuation in recent years.

John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:15 (fourteen years ago)

what's baffling about zombies?

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:16 (fourteen years ago)

I think it's replacing native American attire as the go-to visual/cultural fad.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:16 (fourteen years ago)

you lot are quite easily baffled, i dunno..

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 17:17 (fourteen years ago)

The song is okay. I don't think I'd want to hear it again, but I could imagine it slowly sink its roots into my brain if I heard it repeatedly, to the point that I'd like it. But no motivation to reach that point.
