but in both og and remix, it's the pause when she sings "i don't wanna feel my...legs" that makes it for me

"motivation" is like a solid 7.5 or 8 of 10 for me... def a reliable radio jam but not something i ever really listened to myself

J0rdan S., Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

Hmm...

That Chicago Juke remix is dope.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

I almost feel like Lil Wayne is doing a public service by doing such a ridiculous self-parody tbh; "rain on my head/call it brainstorming" lol O RLY....

ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:43 (fourteen years ago)

and who would have thought she'd have a bigger hit than beyoncé in 2011!

"Motivation" was a bigger hit on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, but "Best Thing I Never Had" peaked higher on the Hot 100.

jaymc, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

wayne's lyrics are obviously totally inane but he sounds good on it, whic his also a rarity for him

J0rdan S., Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

what was the other record called "motivation"? mind blank

if you hate wayne that much listen to the kid sis version instead

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:46 (fourteen years ago)

I think they mean the Clams Casino/Lil B track.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:46 (fourteen years ago)

even tho "best thing i never had" peaked higher on the hot 100, "motivation" was around for way, way longer and in terms of airplay i doubt that there's even a conversation there

J0rdan S., Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:46 (fourteen years ago)

I think they mean the Clams Casino/Lil B track.

smh they're wrong

The very sound of Wayne's voice is horrible on this, he just sucks all the sexy out of the record.

Matt DC, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:48 (fourteen years ago)

"i put her on my plate then do the dishes"

ugh, fuck you!

wayne doesn't quite ruin it for me, though. i def voted for it.

def a reliable radio jam but not something i ever really listened to myself

yep, pretty much. lex- can't believe this wasn't a single in the UK!

handy ban (lou), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:49 (fourteen years ago)

I'd seen the next one talked about, but I never listened to it until last night. DAYUM!

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:50 (fourteen years ago)

ha, i think the thing that keeps "motivation" from being a classic is that it's really not all that sexy to begin with

J0rdan S., Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:50 (fourteen years ago)

poor drake :(

pandemic, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:50 (fourteen years ago)

this is good but I liked Jhene Aiko's better (and wouldve voted for that if I hadn't already had two Jhene tracks in my top 10)

ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:50 (fourteen years ago)

Wow, interesting. This track is cool, but super raw.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:51 (fourteen years ago)

this jojo thing might be the most hilariously ilx placement on any of these lists since i've been posting here

J0rdan S., Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:51 (fourteen years ago)

haha :)
amazing

nathey, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:51 (fourteen years ago)

prolego, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:51 (fourteen years ago)

I have no idea what this is at all.

Matt DC, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:51 (fourteen years ago)

Beastin isn't going to place, is it?

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

Hilariously ILX?

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

she sounds like robyn

call all destroyer, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

it's cool for what it is but i sorta feel like its placement here is just an overboard attempt to spite drake

J0rdan S., Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

"i've been up three days / adderall and red bull" is about as POW an opening line to a pop song as you're gonna hear

it feels so heavily medicated, like she's singing it through this drugged-out fug in the corner of a club, and i love that despite that her sheer contempt slices through the backing. "and when you're in her i know i'm in your head" SO RAW. i can't wait for her album :)

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

Isn't Jojo the woman who does jobbing cover versions of music that isn't on Spotify in like double-quick time?

Matt DC, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

~and when you're in her I know I'm in your head~

prolego, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

So many people have done a version of this it's crazy... including people on this list, like CL from 2NE1.

JoJo is the best, though. Shame her actual singles can't be like this and her mix tapes :\

abcfsk, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

Is there a thread about this? Feel like I'm missing some context...

CJ Fam Club (seandalai), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:54 (fourteen years ago)

btw has Jojo been bringing the rawness and swagger for a while now? Last time I knew anything about her was Too Little Too Late

ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:54 (fourteen years ago)

I have no idea what this is at all.

jojo's answer record to drake - like k michelle's "nothin' on you" in 2010, it was one of those answer messages that dissects the original lyrically as well as musically, looks straight at it and says "this is NONSENSE and here is why"

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:54 (fourteen years ago)

btw the whole flouting of Drake is kinda odk, like I feel like Marvin's Room was the song that pop starlets were lining up all year to prove that they could 'do better'...

ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:55 (fourteen years ago)

odk = idk, as in i dont know how to respond exactly

ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:55 (fourteen years ago)

what the hell

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:55 (fourteen years ago)

mdc how quickly you forget the 13-year-old starlet who gave us "leave (get out)" ;_;

I mean seriously, what the hell

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

my favorite Marvin's Room remake

ban dejar (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

I hear very little rawness and swagger in Jojo. I hear major posing, which is pretty repulsive to me. I can see how it would appeal to some people but this it feels so heavily medicated, like she's singing it through this drugged-out fug in the corner is just not my thing for real.

La Lechera, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

I didn't vote for the JoJo version of this song because I hate Drake. The rawness of it is just so much more intense, and the lyrics make more sense sung from her point of view

Dan S, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

i can't believe i have to listen to the drake version now

call all destroyer, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

JoJo is the woman who was previously the girl who is Leave (Get Out) and Too Little, Too Late and that puppy love rap duet with Bow Wow.

Then she was in label hell for a while and put out a decent electronic-ish r&b mixtape and then this.

(And it's not just about spiting Drake. It takes everything I love about Marvins Room - production, melody - and gets rid of everything I can't stand - Drake's weak delivery, the creepy/uncomfortable character narrating the whole thing - and replaces it with strong vocal delivery and a narrator who is actually flawed but interesting instead of just calling up ex's while drunk and negging them.)

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

it feels so heavily medicated, like she's singing it through this drugged-out fug in the corner of a club

i thought your entire argument against the weeknd was based on hating exactly this

J0rdan S., Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:57 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i didn't vote for this to spite drake at all - if anything jojo showed me that there was worth in an original i had no use for at all
