"novacane" sounded great on the radio too
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:47 (fourteen years ago)
i didn't vote for "novacane" but i dig it
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:48 (fourteen years ago)
i mean even way-past-her-prime MJB had several better jams on her album than this. "mr wrong"! or anthony david's "god said" which was as powerful a ~statement~ as was made in r&b last year
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:49 (fourteen years ago)
frank ocean would be alright if instrumental, he sounds like he's in an attic and can't get down again and also maybe a bit in the early stages of constipation
better than his other record though. all 4 records today inoffensive
― Cashmere Combabe, Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:49 (fourteen years ago)
EMA is so, so bad and unnecessary. why would you need that when you have like... the mellow parts of Sonic Youth songs?
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:50 (fourteen years ago)
glancing over my EOY list now. literally nearly 100 r&b songs i'd give the time of day before anything by f.ocean
the weeknd better not fucking place anywhere

lol good luck with that lex
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:50 (fourteen years ago)
I don't even really care about The Weeknd (maybe heard 1 song?) but I fully expect to see them pop up on this list
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:51 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, I don't dislike Novacane enough to complain about it. It's nice enough, don't go out of my way to listen to it.
It's basically....7/10 for me. Nowhere near amazing enough that I'd put it on my tracks ballot but I understand why people enjoy it and don't begrudge it placing.
― Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:51 (fourteen years ago)
seriously though. what would it take for teedra or k michelle or tiffany evans to get the same sort of traction as this dude? a sex change and a tumblr account? ughhhhh
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:52 (fourteen years ago)
It's like all the tedious critical bait that we've been patting ourselves on the back for avoiding has all slurried into this section of the list. Tenner on the Weeknd to come next.

Frank Ocean is okay, just okay. Hardly makes me want to jump for joy.

It's like all the tedious critical bait that we've been patting ourselves on the back for avoiding has all slurried into this section of the list.
This happens every year! I don't see why it continues to be a surprise.
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:55 (fourteen years ago)
I'm with lex on today's entries so far :/
btw lex you totally should have started threads for "For My Cinderellas" & "Marilyn Monroe", came across yr tumblr via Tom E's and discovered heaps of great stuff on yr EOY list!
― etc, Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:56 (fourteen years ago)
And yeah, Marilyn Monroe deserved a thread of its own, etc. etc.
― Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:57 (fourteen years ago)
they should just let the one person who knows the most about music compile the list ;)
― nathey, Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:57 (fourteen years ago)
(xp follow on to my previous post) It's completely understandable, too; a lot of people like a lot of critical darlings but think they're somewhat overrated, so they end up floating around the 6-15 spot on about a bazillion ballots, which is going to overwhelm any record that 3-4 people feel really passionate about
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:57 (fourteen years ago)
This is true actually, things usually perk up for the top 10 though.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:57 (fourteen years ago)
"for my cinderellas" is ridic good
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:58 (fourteen years ago)
FWIW I have now heard "Countdown" and it's ricockulously brilliant.
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:58 (fourteen years ago)
More people hear less records than people who hear more records, and the buzziest stuff tends to place higher because of it. I don't have any real problems with any of the tracks that have placed so far today (Yonkers is kinda stained by my own opinion of TTC), but yeah...people (even ilmers) who don't track down music obsessively and just kinda listen to what their friends like or what blogs/sites/magazines are covering tend to be working from a shallow pool when voting comes. (Not a slam, btw...do what you like!)
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:59 (fourteen years ago)
as is "marilyn monroe" yes!!!! brianna should be getting the traction that az banks is (though i love 212 too)
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:59 (fourteen years ago)
I actually like "Novocane" better than the last three; I think my moment of overwhelming bitterness was the Destroyer track, my feelings on which are probably very similar to what Lex is feeling now
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:59 (fourteen years ago)
think i've tried 3 or 4 times with that k.michelle song. not happening.
― pandemic, Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:59 (fourteen years ago)
(Also: Dan, curious as to your opinion on this!)
― etc, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:00 (fourteen years ago)
I don't think there's anything special or distinctive about "For My Cinderellas" at all, aside from coming out 12 years too late?
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:00 (fourteen years ago)
OH MY GOD ETC WHY DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS

i just think "for my cinderellas" is fantastic songwriting from a specific wry perspective that you don't hear too much - really good commentary on the ecosystem of relationships - and it's brilliantly performed, you can hear how she's wry and accepting and kinda maybe a bit sad but still good-humoured about the whole situation
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:03 (fourteen years ago)
I'm at work now so I can't listen to this - I know I've got it at home. How does this one go - does it have a vocal hook?

sigh the top 20 is not being kind to me at all. benoit & sergio...most overrated dance act of 2011. where is "the l word" ;_;

Whereas to me it sounds like someone went "I want you to do an 'Unpretty' but don't make it so much of a downer"
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:06 (fourteen years ago)
Maybe because they're wrongly classified as dance? This is totally rainy day subway music.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:06 (fourteen years ago)
What I've Lost is lovely, that was top 10 for me. It's a 70s rock record rather than a dance record to me.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:07 (fourteen years ago)
Also, it reminds me of "Streets of Philadelphia" by Bruce. It's the recurring keyboard bit in the background.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:07 (fourteen years ago)
I only really like Walk & Talk by B&S - the rest is a bit wishy washy, non-descript. Don't mind the one about "do a little cocaine with me" but that's about it. Principles is okay, I guess...
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:07 (fourteen years ago)
xp sonically yeah (but you're not really going to either for the revolutionary arrangements) but "for my cinderellas" is about a completely difft subject to "unpretty"!
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:07 (fourteen years ago)
