Lots of parallels between Goblin and Hissing Fauna Are You The Destroyer, IMO.

why is the "teenage boys trying to shock people" aesthetic revered by so many
Why is anything revered?
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 14:57 (fourteen years ago)
classic bonkers
― nathey, Thursday, 26 January 2012 14:57 (fourteen years ago)
ha dog latin how dare you make me want to hear a Tyler album!
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 14:58 (fourteen years ago)
Terrible fucking record. Next.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 26 January 2012 14:58 (fourteen years ago)
and it's more than "I'm just out to shock you" - there's a lot of power in that video, through composition, the use of focus, expression - it is a really great bit of pop art. The fact he eats a giant cockroach and throws up everywhere is a Brucie.
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 14:58 (fourteen years ago)
idk I thought EARL was p much superior to this in every way; I think I even like "French" more than this
but Tyler is right about 'Yonkers' being a cool word
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 14:59 (fourteen years ago)
I don't have audio at home so I don't know what the song's like, but the gimmick of the video seems to be... that the guy eats a bug and then hangs himself? Don't know what's so "woah!" about that, looks pretty juvenile to me.
― Tuomas, Thursday, 26 January 2012 14:59 (fourteen years ago)
(several x-posts)
everything about tyler the creator is fucking juvenile. puerile maybe a better word. "towering work of art" my ass.

This is how I write off pretty much all OFWGKTA
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:01 (fourteen years ago)
"yonkers" will probably be the single best song to ever come out of OF
beat is a classic anyway
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:01 (fourteen years ago)
the beat is like someone took a good idea and leeched all energy out of it
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:02 (fourteen years ago)
They're both about inner lives and mental breakdown I guess? The latter is less about eliciting a reaction in the listener and more about confession tho. (bits of Goblin are "confessional" I guess but they feel more self-consciously performative / persona-driven.)
― Simon H., Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:02 (fourteen years ago)
The beat is suitably paranoid and jittery and would fit right in on a mid-90s ICP album.
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:03 (fourteen years ago)
well actually "yonkers" is still a step down from "EARL" but that's a 10/10 for all time
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:03 (fourteen years ago)
The only track I remember from the Tyler album is "She," but I've never seen the "Yonkers" video.
― jaymc, Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:03 (fourteen years ago)
xp lol I was gonna say
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:04 (fourteen years ago)
yea yonkers is a fantastic track; 1st thing on my ballot to place! lol
goblin as a record as for the most part boring & juvenile id agree w/
― johnny crunch, Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:04 (fourteen years ago)
i hoped it was just a cover of bonkers by dizzee :(
― nathey, Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:04 (fourteen years ago)
"Which is the right Goblin" is like "which is the right Ghost"
(this guy is not the right Goblin btw)
I am going to tune in for the top 20 because someone has to be the person who does that.

Show me an example of decent/interesting pop/hip-hop that isn't juvenile/puerile/base/provocative/whatever. I don't get it?
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:05 (fourteen years ago)
And the beat rules. So there.
in happier news "i am the best" is totally growing on me, i am getting over my "i don't understand the words" block
xp sade

first off, in what universe is "provocative" equivalent to "juvenile", "base" and "puerile"
secondly, are you fucking KIDDING me

That was the only Destroyer track I voted for.
― jaymc, Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:10 (fourteen years ago)
phew another one i feared would be way higher

― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:10 (fourteen years ago)
This guy's going to win the albums poll isn't he?
― fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:10 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah this guy is kinda weak sauce for me.
― La Lechera, Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:11 (fourteen years ago)
bit of a wobbly start to the top 20
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:12 (fourteen years ago)
this is my prediction :(

― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:12 (fourteen years ago)
I've ended up liking this album a lot, was surprised by the negative reaction itt. That said, I could have probably done without another track.
― MikoMcha, Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:12 (fourteen years ago)
xp: this American does not know from Destroyer (until this poll I assumed it was a crossover doom metal act!)
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:13 (fourteen years ago)
it would be nice to see chris jericho win the royal rumble

The Destroyer album would probably have made my top 50 if I'd done one. Don't love it or hate it.
― CJ Fam Club (seandalai), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:14 (fourteen years ago)
Not sure he (or rather his keyboardist, who composed most of this track) is going for balearic as much as new-age movie soundtrack. Reminds me of, like, Dave Grusin in places.
― jaymc, Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:15 (fourteen years ago)
(until this poll I assumed it was a crossover doom metal act!)irl lol!
― La Lechera, Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:15 (fourteen years ago)
so... I am not OPPOSED to slow builds etc, but why did it take this song 4 minutes to start
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:16 (fourteen years ago)
― fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods)
I'd guess PJ Harvey will win that, maybe Beyonce will be ahead too.
― Kitchen Person, Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:16 (fourteen years ago)
i do think that this song could be a good gateway drug for people who didn't know they wanted to hear 20 min songs...that's something.
― La Lechera, Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:16 (fourteen years ago)
wiki says this song is supposed to be only 7 mins, not the 20 mins that the Youtube seems to imply
it's...okay-ish?
wouldve been awesome if a Blanck Mass album track placed at #19 instead of this, but yknow, I'm dealing...
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:17 (fourteen years ago)
This is meant as a Side D bliss-out, not a single, and should be listened to knowing that.
― Simon H., Thursday, 26 January 2012 15:17 (fourteen years ago)
multixpReminds me of this, which is on spotify if you want to compare it.http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d9/Al_century.jpg

Okay, this Destroyer thing lasts for 19 minutes and begins with some synth drones (had to get my headphones so I get to listen to this stuff) that sound like early 90s ambient... Is the rest of the song like that too? I didn't know so many ILXors like ambient.
I also listened to "Yonkers", and I just don't get it. Is this kind of teenage angsty stuff + Co Flow style beats some new form of undie rap that I haven't heard of? Basically, I've nothing against juvenile tunes if they're about sex or partying or drugs, stuff adults can relate to too, but this tune isn't like that at all.
