Yeah, I mean I have no problem with rock-format music being supplemented by electronica - in fact it's staple listening-fodder for me. WSGM, Jon Hopkins & King Creosote, Console, Panda Bear, John Maus - all good stuff. But I do wonder if guitar-pop as we know it is actually over for now? I think this dearth is what's brought on this recent spate of metal and hardcore listening in me because once you replace all the live instruments in a song with electronic sounds, you're essentially swapping roughness/organic-ness(?) with cleanly precision. I love the latter, but sometimes rock songs still need that margin of human error. Think that's why I was so hypnotised by Weekend Nachos the other day - it was like going out to live in the woods after a month sat indoors playing video games.
The gigantic logical flaw in this argument is the idea that all electronic sounds on a record are sequenced rather than played through a MIDI instrument and all loops are perfectly quantized (the Jamie XX/GSH album undercuts both of these ideas IIRC) (also the Jamie XX/GSH album was terribad)

ha i'm so glad someone agrees on this. i don't think it was DREADFUL but it was negligible and gigantically overrated due to the double name factor
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHNNY FEVER what better present could there possibly be than the top 20

usually it's customary for people w/ birthdays to receive presents and not spend their whole day giving them

I think a good one would be to go to the Mirel Wagner thread and listen to "No Death" and post on it while we wait!

early 2012 pick from the only man who can wear sunglasses indoors: Mirel Wagner

i did not see any reason for that to have been the other way round

Okay, yeah some electronic stuff is played "live" through a MIDI, which will give it a bit of an effect, but it's still digitally synthesised and often electronic music has to then be quantised/cleaned up in order for it to sound good, otherwise you just end up with a James Blake album and it all sounds horrible.

what is GSH BTW?
Gil Scott Heron
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 14:45 (fourteen years ago)
I don't really like Jamie XX's stuff for the above reason as well. I prefer electronic music quantised and clean or else it sounds like some kid bashing away on toy instruments.

Well, I'm glad it's not any higher than this.
― MikoMcha, Thursday, 26 January 2012 14:53 (fourteen years ago)
i thought this would be top 10 for sure. I do think it works best as a video mind you. And yes, I know you've all seen the vid a million times, but I was definitely kind of "woah!" when I first heard and saw this for the first time.
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 14:54 (fourteen years ago)
song + vid together is a of towering work of art.
― jed_, Thursday, 26 January 2012 14:55 (fourteen years ago)
this is basically a charm-free Gravediggaz filtered through Insane Clown Posse
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Thursday, 26 January 2012 14:55 (fourteen years ago)
I held off of Goblin for ages because people were making out that it's 99% rape and faggot jokes. I've listened to it probably three times all the way through - which is enough - but it's really not as bad as people had made out.
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 14:56 (fourteen years ago)
i'm glad it wasn't higher too
relistening w/o video and it's just such a drag, goes on forever and nothing he says resonates with me at all.
video was shit, why is the "teenage boys trying to shock people" aesthetic revered by so many

Lots of parallels between Goblin and Hissing Fauna Are You The Destroyer, IMO.
why is the "teenage boys trying to shock people" aesthetic revered by so many
Why is anything revered?

Terrible fucking record. Next.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 26 January 2012 14:58 (fourteen years ago)
and it's more than "I'm just out to shock you" - there's a lot of power in that video, through composition, the use of focus, expression - it is a really great bit of pop art. The fact he eats a giant cockroach and throws up everywhere is a Brucie.
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 26 January 2012 14:58 (fourteen years ago)
idk I thought EARL was p much superior to this in every way; I think I even like "French" more than this
but Tyler is right about 'Yonkers' being a cool word
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 26 January 2012 14:59 (fourteen years ago)
I don't have audio at home so I don't know what the song's like, but the gimmick of the video seems to be... that the guy eats a bug and then hangs himself? Don't know what's so "woah!" about that, looks pretty juvenile to me.
― Tuomas, Thursday, 26 January 2012 14:59 (fourteen years ago)
(several x-posts)
everything about tyler the creator is fucking juvenile. puerile maybe a better word. "towering work of art" my ass.
