Holocene wasn't even on the nominations list, otherwise I'd say yes. Not that kind of year, especially not in ILX terms. Would you call Midnight City indie-rock? If so then that.

I didn't know California was so popular. Pretty much all the guitar rock bands I voted for (Fucked Up, Yuck, Joy Formidable) have placed in one form or another. Maybe not for singles, but albums we might expect PAnda Bear, St Vincent, When Saints Go Machine, Tom Waits, Kurt Vile and a few others...

If "I Be Beastin'" doesn't place, I'm a punch haters up in they jaw.

Not looking forward to Boring Ivor placing... I wonder who's more likely to send me to sleep first - Grizzly Bear or him.

Yeah, I have no idea really, just thinking of acts that were high in the pfork list that have some sort of ilx following. Only indie rock thing I voted for was Wild Beasts iirc, but don't really expect to see them here today.

Forgot about Wild Beasts. Whenever I listen to that album it just sounds like a whispier non-electronic version of When Saints Go Machine. I'm honestly starting to believe all those columnists who write "rock'n'roll is dead" articles, because really - what is out there that's really making an impact and pushing things forward without "interesting-up" with electronic sounds.

These New Puritans are my benchmark for indie bands pushing things forward as you put it, but obviously they've dumped the whole basic guitar band format. No releases from them in 2011 though.

Yeah, I mean I have no problem with rock-format music being supplemented by electronica - in fact it's staple listening-fodder for me. WSGM, Jon Hopkins & King Creosote, Console, Panda Bear, John Maus - all good stuff. But I do wonder if guitar-pop as we know it is actually over for now? I think this dearth is what's brought on this recent spate of metal and hardcore listening in me because once you replace all the live instruments in a song with electronic sounds, you're essentially swapping roughness/organic-ness(?) with cleanly precision. I love the latter, but sometimes rock songs still need that margin of human error. Think that's why I was so hypnotised by Weekend Nachos the other day - it was like going out to live in the woods after a month sat indoors playing video games.

I was really really pulling for the Dirtbombs and Toro y Moi to make this countdown

I didn't think the Dirtbombs record was as good as it ought to have been. Filed it in my "Failed Experiments" drawer. Still never check out Toro Y Moi - think the chillwave tag always put me off.

We'll I've given up on the Dirtbombs placing here at least (but you're wrong obv); idk why but I still am holding out hope that Stil Sound mivht break top 20, though when I posted that last night I was met with stony silence and that's not really a good sign...

I have that TYM record and I have no idea which track Stil Sound even is, so good luck with that Drugs

ha i'm so glad someone agrees on this. i don't think it was DREADFUL but it was negligible and gigantically overrated due to the double name factor

Okay, yeah some electronic stuff is played "live" through a MIDI, which will give it a bit of an effect, but it's still digitally synthesised and often electronic music has to then be quantised/cleaned up in order for it to sound good, otherwise you just end up with a James Blake album and it all sounds horrible.

I don't really like Jamie XX's stuff for the above reason as well. I prefer electronic music quantised and clean or else it sounds like some kid bashing away on toy instruments.
