I'm leaning towards all-time (I guess more than a lean, because I already voted "all-time").

I def think there should be a 'no-poll' option.

speaking of which, not to derail, but what is the status on the single-artist polls?

I'm down but thinking about all the time it would take me to dig in my memory archives for underground gems that nobody else but me cares about makes my head hurt.

All time music video poll would probably get more people participating and it's less exhausting but we'll end up with all the common suspects. Decade by decade would probably reveal more interesting things in the lower ranks.

that seems like a totally different thing - i don't think people judge live footage in the same way that they do a music video

(though i wouldn't be averse to a poll of live clips at some point, because many over the years have been pretty amazing)

Just split the polls in that case, there's probably only a handful of videos pre-MTV era whereas there are several TV performances from the 80s onwards.

There are actually *shitloads* of soundies and scopitones and early filmic presentations pre-MTV, guys. But I'm not going to argue with "pre-80s" as a grouping, I think that should work out okay.

Hm. I'd say give it a little while, as we haven't even finished the EoY polls yet. I don't tend to participate in the balloted artist polls but I'd say that this is a big enough thing to stand alone. But I dunno, maybe ask in the organisation thread?

To me it's a video.

I always felt this way, but if a segment from a feature can be shown as a stand-alone clip on TV out of context and still look like an awesome video, then why shouldn't it be? I think excluding clips from TV shows or movies limits the options way too much, especially for clips from the 60s and 70s. This would mean we can't include James Brown "Please Please Please" because it was part of a movie? That's just stupid reasoning IMO.

If the 2010's are going to be included, maybe do that one last so that more time can pass. I would vote against lumping them in with the 2000's.

The 10's are a decade of its own but maybe we should just ignore post-2010 in these polls since it's been only two years.

I was thinking, poll the other decades first.. If people want to do the 2010's by the time all the others are finished, then go for it.

Just had a thought - should we get people to just post up the short links that don't auto-embed? Otherwise all the threads will be a massive pain to load. Or should we just figure that people will know those threads are youtube-heavy and 'enter at your own risk'?

short links arent a bad idea but it being a music video poll i feel like we should go w/ embeds

Oh yeah, I'd expect the results thread to have embeds! The noms threads will have way more videos posted, though.

I agree with short links in noms...if there are multiple videos I want to watch in a thread I'll usually open them in new tabs anyway as otherwise I'll forget there's something playing and navigate away.

how long was this era though? i remember seeing tons of music videos in the early 00s on mtv or its offshoots. can't remember when youtube really started but this must only have been a couple of years

There was that era around 2000-2005 when videos were tagged onto CD singles so people could watch them on their computer. I suppose as well it was still a necessary promotional tool for those acts who couldn't make it to Romania or wherever.

i know this only applies to the musical 1% but fwiw TRL was on the air till 2008

why couldn't they make it so any image URL you post automatically becomes an image in the thread with no BBcode formatting required? that would actually be super useful all the time and wouldn't make loading threads a pain in the ass, unlike youtubes.

Any more thoughts on doing this, gr8080? If you're not up for it, I'm willing to take over... though it'd be my first poll-running experience, so you'd doubtless be the better candidate.
