I think with songs you love you *might* be more likely to vote the videos higher, but for hated songs an awful lot of people will just refuse to vote for the video, no matter how good.
― emil.y, Thursday, 26 January 2012 03:21 (fourteen years ago)
xpost Yeah, JF, that's exactly what I mean. I just don't think that a current 'Total Eclipse' would get the props (unless the hivemind loved it, obviously).
― emil.y, Thursday, 26 January 2012 03:22 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah me too.. If the song sucks, the video is pretty much worthless IMO.. although cases have existed where a video was strong enough that I ended up liking a song that I previously hadn't.
― billstevejim, Thursday, 26 January 2012 03:23 (fourteen years ago)
And cases where video and song are forever linked.
What a wonderful turn of events. In case people were wondering, the Rihanna song was the one track with higher Spotify popularity than "Give Me Everything".

wow i am really not feeling much of this last section, after being p enamored with the past few days of selections. i think "kaputt" is great but i voted for "the laziest river" instead (at #1!), and the album (also v v high). i guess i dig "sade" and "we found love" quite a lot too but i didn't vote for anything btwn 40-21
my predictions for 20-11: omar-s, storm queen, maybe even julio bashmore unless he comes in higher. terje is a lock for top 10 imo, and i have no idea if "the laziest river" will place but i damn well hope it does because that shit is amazing

this would have been depressing day of tracks if I had been following along. Voted for Kaputt but that was it. "Another Girl" is a good one, as is "Call Your Girlfriend" but I don't really consider that a 2011 song.
― skip, Thursday, 26 January 2012 04:41 (fourteen years ago)
it's a shame I slept all the day through and missed today's rollout; gonna throw my two cents in now
40 - BEYONCÉ "Schoolin' Life" - dope!
39 - GOTYE ft. KIMBRA "Somebody That I Used to Know" - so fucking appalled to see this place, at least I'm SURE I'll have my venegance when all you UK/USA ppl will be sick of this song in few weeks from now
38 - 2NE1 "I Am the Best" - damn, I'm trying to keep track of what's going on in k-pop but this song somehow slipped from my fingers, dunno why bcz it's one really fine song
37 - WILCO "One Sunday Morning (Song for Jane Smiley's Boyfriend)" - tl,dl
35 - JAY-Z & KANYE WEST "Niggas in Paris" - woah Jay's verse here is really dope
34 - REBECCA BLACK "Friday" - ":D". I mean I like the song, but I'm glad it didn't land up any further in the ranking
32 - TERROR DANJAH ft. RUBY LEE RYDER "Full Attention" - recently this one really grew on me, but in the end I much prefer "Champion" (which I had on my ballot and surely there's no way it's going to place now)
31 - SEANY MAC "One of Those Days (Organ Mix)" - didn't hear about this one before, thanks ILM! there's never too much of good house tunes (also - why "organ"? I don't hear any organs in it)
29 - DESTROYER "Kaputt" - meh27 - ROBYN "Call Your Girlfriend" - the weakest single from Body Talk, IMO. I don't get the appeal.
26 - KATY B "Broken Record" - yay Katy! I still hoping for "Witches' Brew" tho
24 - NYAN CAT "Nyan Cat Theme" - considered voting for this one, but thankfully changed my mind, although I really like the melody
22 - RIHANNA "We Found Love" - really wish I hadn't forgotten to nominate the Funkystepz remix, there was no way I would vote for this dull original version
(not a single track from my ballot today, that's funny)
― V79, Thursday, 26 January 2012 04:55 (fourteen years ago)
also: is today's rollout going to be a regular one or a longer one? there was some debate yesterday I think?
― V79, Thursday, 26 January 2012 04:56 (fourteen years ago)
i think JF said he was gonna do the top ten on friday
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 26 January 2012 05:25 (fourteen years ago)
Well, I think I'm gonna do the full 20. I was worried I wasn't going to have time to get all the jpegs done, but I only have a couple left now.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 26 January 2012 05:26 (fourteen years ago)

i think it's better this way since people can usually guess the top 10 once there's only 10 left, so spreading it out is more anti-climactic than tension-building
― ciderpress, Thursday, 26 January 2012 06:30 (fourteen years ago)
More thanks and appreciation Johnny, this poll is totally getting me through the week.

So yeah, all done. Full top 20 will be rolled out tomorrow, starting approximately 15 or 20 minutes after I wake up. -_-

― Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 26 January 2012 07:04 (fourteen years ago)
LMFAO was my #3, and would have been my #1 if I didn't stick some dance stuff that's definitely not appearing now ahead of it. Blah, you lot probably wouldn't have voted for "Surfin' Bird" or "Pump Up The Jam" either.
Hoping there'll still be some dancehall ("Coloring Book"/"One By One"?) show up but looking increasingly unlikely; hopefully the track-hyping threads for "Fuck'd Up"/"Kush Groove"/"Drumz" worked their magic for the top 20.
On the 2011 yacht-rock tip, Billy Currington's "Love Done Gone" >>>>>>>>>> Destroyer.

I hadn't heard "The Party Rock Anthem" before someone played it at Outloud.fm a couple of weeks ago, and I kinda fail to see what's so awesome about it. I've always loved good novelty(-ish) dance tunes, but that one didn't seem to offer anything that would distinguish it from the generic "rap + Eurodance" sound that's been the trend for novelty club tunes for the last 5 years or so. At least last year's "Let Me Smang It" had an irresistably freaky and unique feel to it, so it deserved to be on list.
― Tuomas, Thursday, 26 January 2012 07:58 (fourteen years ago)
my votes that placed today:
WILCO "One Sunday Morning (Song for Jane Smiley's Boyfriend)" (my #2)one of my beefs with Wilco is that Tweedy doesn't write very many songs that suit his voice. He's found an ideal match here, and backs it with a gorgeous pastoral cycle (think jaymc said something similar upthread). this hangs above everything else they've ever done and at 12 minutes is just about long enough.
JAY-Z & KANYE WEST "Niggas in Paris" (my #1)itunes says i've listened to this 65 times, but i know it's alot more than that and it gets me goin every single time. killer melody/beat, kanye even gets a classic absurdist line here, love the will ferrell break, grandiose ending, the different moods tossed around.
BIG K.R.I.T. ft. 2 CHAINZ, 8BALL & MJG "Money on the Floor"im with Lex re: this and Country Shit are all i really need.
JOE GODDARD ft. VALENTINA "Gabriel"love the valentina-bot's fragile command so much.
― Cosmo Vitelli, Thursday, 26 January 2012 08:01 (fourteen years ago)
country shit is big k.r.i.t.'s like 30th best song

lmfao are recording a song with paris hilton atm
can't stand "party rock anthem" (mostly cuz i find THEM so dislikeable, which isn't the case with pitbull at all) - am wondering whether paris will salvage lmfao or they'll drag her down to their base level. in any case it seems appropriate though

she released an entire album in 2006! it was good!
― donna rouge, Thursday, 26 January 2012 08:10 (fourteen years ago)
Really? I find that kinda hard to believe, though I guess I shouldn't judge until hear it. Haven't most albums by celerities-turned-singers been pretty awful, though? Can't think of a single good example...
― Tuomas, Thursday, 26 January 2012 08:14 (fourteen years ago)
my #2 album of 2006 <3 one of the best songs (though it's hard to pick just one) http://youtu.be/cA3Cpq9RiGs
bonus: "stars are blind" inspired my favourite ilx post of all time. of. all. time!
yeah! well you've also got "suicide" as merely "stupid pride", a somewhat hardline xtian sentiment which that indeed daring pantheism x astrology "gods are crazy / stars are blind" double whammy immediately vexes. and then yr everyday manichaean "be the devil and angel too" chaser. paris milton more like.

kylie minogue and j-lo, to name two off the top of my head, built entire pop careers on it

Okay, that Paris Hilton tune is quite okay! Don't understand why it needed to have a hard rock guitar though, since it's clearly a dance tune. Also, I think it could've been sung by pretty much anyone (I assume Hilton didn't write the music or the lyrics, sorry if i'm wrong), don't hear enough personality in it to justify why it needed to be sung by Paris Hilton. No wonder she didn't become a pop star.

Sorry, I should've clarified that I meant celebrities who weren't already singers to begin with... Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Lopez and Minogue both began singing very early in their careers, even if they both became known as actors first?
― Tuomas, Thursday, 26 January 2012 08:27 (fourteen years ago)
Hmmm, now that I think of it, one of my favourite singers of all time, Grace Jones, was a model before she became a musician. So I guess it is possible, just not very common.

Stars Are Blind also 'inspired' the excellent eponymous Zhanna Friske single that promted Russia's biggest music station to introduce a special 'Plagiarist Of The Year' award at their annual awards show.

I'd never realised this record was actually by Rihanna before, it barely even sounds like her, like all trace of personality in her voice has been sanded away. Song isn't much cop either.
You guys are going to regret being so charitable when Calvin Harris becomes American pop's ubiquitous go-to crossover producer.
