Nyan Cat - Much prefer the smooth jazz version but this ones ok too, better than most of other stuff so far anyway (didn't vote for it though)

Cashmere Combabe, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:25 (fourteen years ago)

hate that badger thing though

Cashmere Combabe, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:25 (fourteen years ago)

wow, never heard "sade" before and it is terrific

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:25 (fourteen years ago)

also thx for reminding me of hamster dance, youtubing it now

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:25 (fourteen years ago)

really great day!

prolego, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:27 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, "Sade" is gorgeous. I'm so glad I finally got around to downloading the mixtape, it really is essential to the whole LTTP story.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:28 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe "story" is the wrong word, but it really rounds out the experience.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:29 (fourteen years ago)

"...we all went home and jammed some Sade. The end."

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:30 (fourteen years ago)

(sorry jvc; i was just messing around)

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:30 (fourteen years ago)

yeah as a pretty avowed non diddy fan i was shocked by how much i loved "sade", i should prob investigate further but yeah chris brown and coming home are big impediments for me

blurgh (jjjusten), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:32 (fourteen years ago)

"Ass on the Floor" is pretty great, too. I was going to get Last Train To Paris on release day until I found out Chris Brown was on it.

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:33 (fourteen years ago)

No offense taken! Really just trying to get across the point that if you loved LTTP, you really need to hear the mixtape too!

(xpost)

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:33 (fourteen years ago)

well you know if only all stories ended like that ;)

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:40 (fourteen years ago)

Every story should, imho. Juno might have been tolerable.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:43 (fourteen years ago)

Oh wow, another two of my votes "Another Girl" and "Sade" placed. I didn't really expect either at this point.

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:50 (fourteen years ago)

Every year there's at least one (sometimes more) track which blows me away and makes me mad I wasn't listening to it all year. This year, it's 2NE1's "I Am the Best". SO EFFING GOOD.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

^^otm

I tweeted about it after I listened to it today and was linked to this: Pop Utopianism

encarta it (Gukbe), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:59 (fourteen years ago)

Didn't vote for 'Sade' but really glad to see it here, so beautifully produced. Best moment for me is when the woodblock-type percussion comes in over the synths in the intro.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

xp 2NE1: Then you should go on a youtube spree to watch it live (in addition to checking out their other stuff, of course) - fanchants from the audience and all: http://youtu.be/7epNrIkjBv8

abcfsk, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:03 (fourteen years ago)

xp

kudos to frank kogan, he was going on about k-pop YEARS ago before it randomly became a thing this year

Naega jeil jal naga!

Unfortunately, this isn't really true. Other than when on a whim I reviewed Drunken Tiger in 2000, I didn't hear any K-pop until 2009, when I casually posted a Wonder Girls vid on my lj more for the plot (background becomes foreground) than the sound, and anhh and then Sabina and Tari and Mat poured in, embedding videos, making informed comments, and so forth.

Link for the definitive, transcendent live performance of "I Am The Best," with CL being the most incandescently effervescent (or effervescently incandescent) creature I've seen in music, probably ever. Also greatest fancam.

"Can You Follow Me" possibly ranks with "I Am The Best" in the 2NE1 pantheon.

By the way, here are several of us from the Singles Jukebox in the audience at the Freaky Trigger Awards Gala displaying a range of reactions to "I Am The Best"'s finishing unexpectedly high (4th place) in the Freaky Trigger Readers' Poll. I'm the guy on the left in the white jacket.

you bought childish gambino! don't act like you have any purchasing dignity!

for others interested in LTTP btw the chris brown songs are NOT negligible, lex is the only person on ilm who thinks this - the whole thing is great though definitely track it down

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:09 (fourteen years ago)

You see, this Dirty Money shit, it ain't for everybody
It's a muthafuckin vibe
It's for muthafuckas that's patient

So happy this placed - top ten track for me.

Hadn't realised "Nyan Cat" was, er, original c.2011 - I'd grouped in my head w/"Always" & "What Is Love?" & "Tarzan Boy" as a YTMND-esque exhumation.

etc, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:09 (fourteen years ago)

today's was the best 20 songs yet!

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:10 (fourteen years ago)

lol, Childish Gambino happened on a whim because I liked the "Bonfire" video without paying much attention to the fact that the song wasn't that good

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:11 (fourteen years ago)

also to my knowledge Donald Glover never beat up his girlfriend and then acted like a privileged unrepentant dick about it

Anyone who hasn't really been catching up with K-pop this year might also want to check out Hyuna's 'Bubble Pop'. It's not quite as amazing but still absolutely fantastic.

For something in a vaguely similar maximalist style to I Am The Best, Taiwan's Lollipop F have a song called 'Dance' that may be worth a look.

Mohombi Khush Hua (ShariVari), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:15 (fourteen years ago)

just wish there was someone around to smack jordan around and dan for calling 2011 jay-z 'great', dudes had free reign to be posting nonsense

unfortunate xp w/ chris brown comment re: "smack around" :/

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:16 (fourteen years ago)

check out Hyuna's 'Bubble Pop'

Quite fun.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:26 (fourteen years ago)

'Bubble Pop' is a fun track, yeah.

emil.y, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:29 (fourteen years ago)

Regarding 2NE1:

Apricot's new girlfriend did indeed matriculate for a couple of years in Boston, and before that had spent her teens in Maine. In fact, 2NE1 is fairly international/American in its upbringing: besides Bom's life in New England, producer/writer Teddy Park lived his adolescence in NY and Los Angeles; Dara's teen years were in the Philippines; and during CL's elementary school years she moved with her family from Korea to France, the U.S., Japan, and back to Korea (her dad's an academic, a physicist). Nonetheless, she's still the baddest female Seoul City ever had. (Minzy, the ace hip-hop dancer, is the only one to have spent most all her life in Korea.)

40 - BEYONCÉ "Schoolin' Life" (258 Points, 9 Votes, 2 First-Place Votes)
39 - GOTYE ft. KIMBRA "Somebody That I Used to Know" (260 Points, 9 Votes)
38 - 2NE1 "I Am the Best" (264 Points, 6 Votes, 2 First-Place Votes)

3 of my top 8 right there. What a wonderful start to the top 40!

danzig, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

38 - 2NE1 "I Am the Best" (264 Points, 6 Votes, 2 First-Place Votes)

I thought there would be more voters for 2NE1 - I remember lots of people raving about this and then I went back to the k-pop thread and in fact it was just the same few people going on about this ad nauseum.

Nevertheless, is this the track with the highest average points?

danzig, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:35 (fourteen years ago)

oh so much of what has been said in this thread today has been stupid.

but i got to hear seany mac make a ukg song, so i still luv y'all

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:36 (fourteen years ago)

(My favorite HyunA performance from 2011 was actually this live version of "Just Follow" with Zico, where she chooses swag over bubbles:

Frank Kogan, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:38 (fourteen years ago)

Oops. Sorry, didn't mean to embed that, didn't think I had. A moderator can take it down. Here's the link.

Frank Kogan, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

whoa this seany mac song

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:42 (fourteen years ago)

in fact it was just the same few people going on about this ad nauseum.

We've identified some users who would've placed it high up indeed, but didn't vote, but whatever -- people seem to have noticed it now.

abcfsk, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:48 (fourteen years ago)

whoa this seany mac song

yeah I can't think of a single song more likely than this to be ILX catnip, aside from 2NE1

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:48 (fourteen years ago)

This Big K.R.I.T. song is not my thing at all, really. It's basically like G-Funk and Three Six Mafia had an enervated baby.

― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, January 25, 2012 12:47 PM (4 hours ago)

wha

(lol xp speaking of ilm catnip)

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

Really glad KRIT placed, it was in my top five. Struggling to think of any rap beyond Yonkers and Gucci Gucci that has a chance of placing from here on though.

Number None, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:57 (fourteen years ago)

"sade" is great obv, but my fav DDM thing from this year was their cover/mash-up of "no ordinary love"

SO OTM. It's like the perfect music tailor made for me.

DO NOT CALL (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 23:05 (fourteen years ago)

I can't go that far with it, but as someone who generally hasn't given a shit about Sean Combs in over a decade, I was shocked by how much I loved the album.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 23:07 (fourteen years ago)

Not really sure I'm feeling the love for the 2NE1 thing. I did like the bit with the machine guns, other than that it's girls aloud with a bloghouse soundtrack. Maybe just not my bag..

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

haha and you fail to see how this fits into the ILM wheelhouse????????
