nyan cat is sorta fascinatingly annoying but i think i like less gimmick-y are at least gimmick-y in a different way youtube only stuff
itd be sweet if more mario paint compositions made ilm eoy lists tho. or like 'america, now' jams or w/e
― sisqó inferno (Lamp), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:05 (fourteen years ago)
i mean one of the major things about pop music is that it's broken into discreet manageable units, if that's not your bag then ok cool but i would suggest that we're dealing with something else now
oh, broken into discreet manageable units is very much my bag, it's what nearly all music is, isn't it? Nyan Cat is different though. Get it?
xp lol indeed
― future debts collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:05 (fourteen years ago)
huh i can still play my youtube!
the weirdest thing is that the song was given away on a free download in the first place so i have no idea what product they think they're protecting by yanking it
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:05 (fourteen years ago)
eh ok if the claim is that the future direction of pop music is infinite loops then we will just wait and see

Who's saying anything about direction? It could be a one-off, who cares? It is there, it exists now.

all i'm trying to say is that framing it as "pop music" revolutionary or otherwise makes no sense to me

It existed 8 years ago in a much less annoying form when Weebl did "Badger Badger Badger", is what we keep telling you.

LBI otm; part of the implications of infinite loops is that there pop music doesn't need a future

minus one "there"
More recently a dubstep version called "Guess I got My Badger Back" was released based on "Swagga" by Excision & Datsik.[11]

ok u guys, i give up. i won't even talk about how absolutely no one would ever be riding for this without the cat gif and meowing as an instrument.

(though I love the Aja Dante Daft Penguin ytmnd thing and wouldve totally voted for it if i were around when whoever it was set that up)

Yeah, Badgerbadgerbadger was funny, I liked it, but not as a track. Nyan Cat appeals to a lot of what I like about music. And cats.

Yeah, that is a bold claim impossible to prove. And even if so I don't see how that is even remotely relevant? It is what it is.

just FYI, using "it is what it is" is the 2012 version of Godwin's Law

You could say the same thing about how no one would ever be riding for Lady Gaga without her image, weird dress style, exhuberant videos etc.

yeah Lamp & lex otm; "Sade" is great
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:15 (fourteen years ago)
... except that wouldn't be true, because people really started paying attention to Lady Gaga and taking her seriously when the video of her playing "Poker Face" on the piano on Japanese TV started circulating and ppl realized she could really sing and play (IOW, there was "substance" under the "artifice" that allowed people to relax and enjoy the spectacle)
also "Sade" is amazing, I should grab that mixtape
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:17 (fourteen years ago)
oh lol now I remember why I blanked DDM, Chris Brown is on the album

Uhm, Dan, I don't disagree with that? It was CAD who argued that one couldn't like Nyan Cat without the cat and the .gif. Which remains unproven, because Nyan Cat happens to be the outcome of; music+gif+cat. Which is what I meant by "it is what it is". Not a 2012 Godwin, just a response to CAD trying to argue that the Nyan music wouldn't be as succesful without the video or gif. Which can't be proven tbh.
― future debts collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:20 (fourteen years ago)
Anyway, enough with Nyan hogging the thread now
the mixtape is basically the entire album remixed in a lush r&b style - such a neat idea (and kind of illustrative of the amount of creativity bubbling around DDM) and v effective too
the chris brown songs luckily happen to be the most negligible
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:20 (fourteen years ago)
what I love about "Sade" is the high drama: love the twinkling beginning & Diddy's exhausted come-on -> the climax & then drop when the singers finally come in. & the singers on the "chorus", the "I don't know what to do", when they're singing so high that it sounds like the song is going to crack: so tense!
― Euler, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:21 (fourteen years ago)
So pleased that Sade made it this high, my number 2 as well.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:22 (fourteen years ago)
Nyan Cat - Much prefer the smooth jazz version but this ones ok too, better than most of other stuff so far anyway (didn't vote for it though)
