Is Calvin Harris the 2011 version of Robert Miles?

http://nyan.cat/
^despite the incorrigible imitation animation, this site is a perfect representation of what LBI is getting at. You basically turn it on, listen to Nyan Cat for however long you want and then shut it off. Basically you, the listener, decide how long the piece of music is. That's what revolutionary about it. The cuetsy cat meme aspect is just the vehicle for what amounts to almost a platonic ideal of one of the principles behind a lot of house music, including many of the songs in this countdown: the idea that pop music doesn't have to be about 'songs'--discreet units w/ beginnings and endings--but instead can be about a continuum

LBI, see Satie's "Vexations" (1893). Loops have a looooong history.

The original version of the song "Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!" was uploaded by user "daniwell"[4] to the Japanese video site Nico Nico Douga on July 25, 2010.[5] The song features the Vocaloid Hatsune Miku (初音ミク?). The Japanese word for the sound cats make, "nyā" (にゃあ?), is the equivalent of the English language word "meow".[1][6]A user named "Momo Momo" ("もももも") uploaded a remixed version of the song "Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!", adding the repeating vocal sound "nyan" throughout the song, to Nico Nico Douga on January 31, 2011.[7] The added vocal sound was created using the singing synthesizer software UTAU with the voice preset, "Momone Momo" (桃音モモ).[8] The UTAU voice preset, "Momone Momo", gets its name from the kanji "momo" 桃, meaning "peach", and "ne" 音, meaning "sound".[9] The voice source used to create the Momone Momo voice was Fujimoto Momoko (藤本萌々子?), a Japanese woman who lives in Tokyo.[10]

lol I know I've heard Wilco before but they apparently made absolutely no impression on me because I'm surprised this song sounds like this
I am also 100% certain that within 15 seconds of finishing this song I won't remember how it goes

I don't know about that, I have a lot of hate for him ever since I saw him on tv going "I GET ALL THE GIRLS I GET ALL THE GIRLS" five years ago.
Also his gormless face in the Dizzee Rascal video gets me pretty angry.

Yeah I'm really confused as to how suddenly Nyan Cat is the revolutionary loop, because, uh, no it's really not.

Yes, I know loops have a long history, jeez. I am into repetitive and minimal music myself. But I never before stumbled onto a piece of music that goes on forever, not before Nyan Cat.

― blurgh (jjjusten), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 20:56 (fourteen years ago)
trust me the amount that i liked that song was as surprising to me as it is to most of you
OMG my #2! "sade" is so incredible - the groove is so DEEP, and dawn and kalenna's delivery is so spot on - just the right amount of tension vs sinking into it.
I JUST WANNA GET HIGH, KICK IT ALL DAYYYYY, LISTENIN TO SADEEEEE
^^applies to this song as well as sade herself!
my #1 musical moment of 2011: when nguzunguzu opened their second set at night slugs with this, extended twinkling intro and all - those notes just hang in the space so amazingly - and then mixed it into this remix of sade's "cherish the day"

<3 u but this is wacky--as a listener i don't have the slightest desire or need to control how long the piece of music is, that's what the artist is supposed to be doing. and that fact about nyan cat is the case because it lacks a lot of the great qualities of, well, music (variation, complexity, forward progression, contrast).
i mean one of the major things about pop music is that it's broken into discreet manageable units, if that's not your bag then ok cool but i would suggest that we're dealing with something else now.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 20:57 (fourteen years ago)
here's a youtube of "sade" http://youtu.be/45xQ-XwqZiU
(i uploaded it quite recently, it doesn't show up when you search for whatever reason)
(i am really thrilled to see it place so high)

Sade! Another one that got cut last minute from my ballot. There was so much good stuff this year. Sigh.
― Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 20:58 (fourteen years ago)
holy fuck "Sade" is great, how did I miss this
I guess blanking DDM because of the irritating omnipresence of "I'm Coming Home" was a mistake
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 20:59 (fourteen years ago)
I don't how anyone can use "Loituma" and "Hamster Dance" as counter-examples to "discredit" "Nyan Cat". They are great loops too, and they should've placed in ILM previous polls as well. Let's just be happy we finally got it right this year!
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 20:59 (fourteen years ago)
i find it pretty remarkable that even after giving us a massive sprawling epic album as good as LTTP, one of the best diddy dirty money songs was still to come on a free mixtape a few months later

I don't how anyone can use "Loituma" and "Hamster Dance" as counter-examples to "discredit" "Nyan Cat".
Perhaps you should read the defense that posits Nyan Cat as something revolutionary and new and not the newest iteration of an Internet meme that is pushing 15 years old.
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 21:02 (fourteen years ago)
diddy dirty money in generally is the project that keeps giving - i'm expecting dawn richard's mixtape to place, and kalenna's just kicked off her solo career with this AMAZING BANGER (that i assume emerged too late in the year to have a shot here - i encourage everyone to listen to it though) http://soundcloud.com/k-diddybop/kalenna-gotowork

nyan cat is sorta fascinatingly annoying but i think i like less gimmick-y are at least gimmick-y in a different way youtube only stuff

xp lol indeed

huh i can still play my youtube!
the weirdest thing is that the song was given away on a free download in the first place so i have no idea what product they think they're protecting by yanking it
