back from lunch

I have zero (0) opinion on the Destroyer track other than to agree with the PSB invocation; dude's voice is VERY similar to Neil Tennant's when he's in sotto voce mode. I will probably never intentionally play this again.

PJ Harvey is manifestly brilliant; this and "On Battleship Hill" are my two favorites from the album.

I never heard "Call Your Girlfriend" before now; I kind of hated Body Talk Pt 1 and completely avoided everything that came after it. This is a decent song but I feel like many of the tracks behind it are more interesting/engaging.

Katy B track is great.

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:16 (fourteen years ago)

Yes!

Meme Rogers (DL), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:16 (fourteen years ago)

catching up too.

destroyer - i tried a bunch of times but i don't like his voice or the production. it's just boring.

pj - this is uh not what i expected. is the rest of the album like this?

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:16 (fourteen years ago)

Ooh nice, was a bit lukewarm on this at first, but it (ear)wormed it's way in. Thought it might be a bit higher.

fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

cad: kind of? it's a very... contemplative album

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

listening to "Gabriel"; at some point it went from "oh this is nice" to "woah I LOVE THIS" and I'm not sure what happened

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah this is a really good song. Someone on here described it as sounding like early Basement Jaxx which is spot on.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

Oh DAMN, forgot to vote for this. Love it. Loooove iiiiiiit.

DavidM, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

oh i like "gabriel" a lot, was way more impressed by it than i thought i would be - didn't make my ballot though. like john talabot, i like that it uses cut-up vox to convey euphoria rather than ~melancholy~

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

as far as uk dudes in bands trying their hands at dance numbers went last year, joe goddard >>>>>>>> jamie xx

the chutzpah of calling your track "gabriel" is funny too - lives up to it though!

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:20 (fourteen years ago)

Never heard "Gabriel" before, it's definitely pleasant though I wouldn't have voted for it anyway.

Got to head out now, really sad I'm going to miss the reveal of #24!

CJ Fam Club (seandalai), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

the cut-up vocal drove me nuts before the end. Like it wasn't cut up enough, maybe? Good song though,

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

feel like this is the heaviest dance list since i've been around ilx

i really did not know that there were still robyn tracks eligible for voting, oh well

"broken record" isn't really one of my favorite katy b tracks... much prefer "movement" or "witches brew"

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

my fav part is in the middle before the beat comes back in -- "for he was stronger than i was" etc.

that's a pretty bad robyn song

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

xp Katy B def sounds like Basement Jaxx "Remedy".. good call.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

Love the way that the Joe Goddard's (?) vocals echo Roy Davis's 'Gabriel'. Or is it a sample?

fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

"Call Your Girlfriend" is ok but didn't kick my ass as much as "Hang With Me."

billstevejim, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:24 (fourteen years ago)

"Broken Record" has a bit of Paranoid Android going along, but I kinda dug how a lot of the prior singles were about mastering different types of dance music and bringing in dazzling sonics, and this one was more about songwriting

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

i like that it uses cut-up vox to convey euphoria rather than ~melancholy~

... how is this NOT a melancholic song?

roy davis jr's "gabriel" = very very classic garage track

xp is it a sample? gonna relisten to check

there's also dj technic's "gabryelle" too, it's kind of a talismanic uk garage name

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

that's a pretty bad katy b song

DavidM, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

I mean, it's a minor key stomper about broken hearts and not being strong enough and how Gabriel needs to hang his head in shame; how does any of that scan as "euphoria"?

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:26 (fourteen years ago)

oh i don't know

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:27 (fourteen years ago)

I like dis song. I don't like dat song.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

lol

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

who is valentina, btw?

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

Okay catching up:

Big KRIT - Never heard this before, fucking love it, that purring bass noise is amazingly sleazy.

Robyn - I kind of hate the very IDEA of Robyn, the indie-safe pop star marketed to people who deep down don't like pop music very much even when they pretend to. When her tongue is firmly in her cheek she is appalling. Thankfully this is the good Robyn, the one with the soaring end-credits melodies that I really loved on Be Mine, Who's That Girl, With Every Heartbeat. This isn't quite as good as any of them but it's getting there. Pleasantly surprised.

Katy B - I voted this in my top three, I think, I've played it incessantly this year. Now we're old enough to have a generation of young people who are young enough to have been played rave music as babies, it's hardly surprising this sound has taken off again, and Geeneus and Katy were astute enough to notice that Baby D's Let Me Be Your Fantasy is one of the most fondly-remembered number ones of the 90s. The "like a broken record" bit where the Amen break kicks back in is basically my hands-in-the-air heartmelting pop moment of 2011. Magnificent.

Joe Goddard & Valentina - Also magnificent, also in my top 5 or 6 I think. The songwriting and the voice are just so charming and so strong. Makes me yearn for the alternative reality where Hot Chip did a Basement Jaxx and got fantastic guest vocalists in for every song and became the best British band of the 00s.

I mean, it's a minor key stomper about broken hearts and not being strong enough and how Gabriel needs to hang his head in shame; how does any of that scan as "euphoria"?

Dude blurring the emotive boundaries between euphoria and heartbreak is pretty much the central pillar of house music!

Dat song sux. Dis song real good doe.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:30 (fourteen years ago)

this song rules. this song sux.

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

That said I can totally imagine Gabriel working as a torch song as well as it works as a dance banger.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

haven't caught up with the whole list but just want to say that 2NE1 song is INCREDIBLE, easily my favourite new discovery from the list so far. would have put that pretty high on my ballot if i'd heard it. was there a thread for that song? there should have been a thread!!

jabba hands, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:32 (fourteen years ago)

if you think people posting their opinions on songs is silly you should prob consider getting out of this thread

Quite like "Gabriel", but don't fully get the love for it. Perhaps if I'd heard it in a club... yeah, like THAT'S going to happen, at my advanced age. Still, I'm enjoying Goddard's work with 2 Bears, so All Is Not Lost.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:34 (fourteen years ago)

Keep meaning to start a 2 Bears thread but I should probably hear the album first.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

broken record - like this much more than the last katy b song. seems to have more of a destination. there's something really acute about her songs that i can't decide whether i like or not.

gabriel - can't comment on context at all but the vocal is great. takes a little while to get going.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

I don't see why "dance banger" automatically means "happy and uplifting". There were entire dance subgenres dedicated to the idea that dancing can arise out of more than just happiness, from gabba through techstep, plus every smiley happy anthem has a sinister or melancholy counterpoint that bangs just as hard.

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 19:36 (fourteen years ago)

'gabriel' is a good one
