@ EZ: the RD guitarist/singer is a bit exhibitionist in self-directed videos as well as a fashion/interview photoshoot.

Plato’s The Cave In Claymation (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:06 (fourteen years ago)

RD guitarist/singer has a page on ModelMayhem though I dont remember her name

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:07 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks for the crash course. I heard a song of theirs once, thought it was cut-rate second-hand shoegaze and never gave them a second look.

I think self-exploitation is very different than the Yuck thing.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:10 (fourteen years ago)

lol i keep thinking of ruff diamondz when i see rd

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:11 (fourteen years ago)

Was the Yuck video that bad? I think I must have been doing something else instead of watching, cause I don't really remember it.

CJ Fam Club (seandalai), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:11 (fourteen years ago)

naked hitchhiker, band looking bored, naked girl looking bored. i liked the song tho.

pandemic, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:13 (fourteen years ago)

they also cover her in a gooey substance

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:13 (fourteen years ago)

I like RD, but never knew anything about her exhibitionism (should see videos at some point, I guess).

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:13 (fourteen years ago)

I missed the anal glands thankfully, but covering a naked girl with yellow cooking oil that looks kind of like urine is pretty bad imo.

rob, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:13 (fourteen years ago)

it was more just out of the song's character but what i'm realizing is that since music videos are only viewed on the internet every band is like "may as well throw some tits in there"

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:14 (fourteen years ago)

anal gland thing is their other video.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:14 (fourteen years ago)

Haven't seen it. Thanks for the warning.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

i thought the hitchhiker's hands being tied behind her back whilst being baptized in cooking oil was kinda key

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:16 (fourteen years ago)

good general policy with their videos, it seems.

xpost

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:16 (fourteen years ago)

Many many xps: jaymc nails it re: that Wilco song. I like it for exactly the same reason I like long, gorgeous, repetitive dance tracks. The length is the point: at four minutes it would be just a pretty little tune. This way it's hypnotic.

Fucked Up are so plainly a brilliant thing that I deeply regret my instinctive dislike of the hardcore bark.

Meme Rogers (DL), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:16 (fourteen years ago)

Remember the abuse Roger Waters got for his Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking album cover? Yuck's video more or less that, plus nonchalance on the part of the band. Their other video for Rubber, is a good deal more upset worthy.

Not trying to derail, just bemused by the indie/rap double standard wrt exploitation.

Plato’s The Cave In Claymation (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:17 (fourteen years ago)

It's not even the vocal quality as much as it is the full-on contempt for the voice as a musical instrument, really.

I haven't heard the F'ed Up but I do think this is a pretty good description of a particular school of hardcore vocals, for example, The Ex. It could be a deliberate decision to make the vocals unmusical in order to emphasize the political content of the lyrics. It's like: Don't listen to how I'm singing - listen to what I'm singing.

ciderpress, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

Aieeeeeeee

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

i think "kaputt" is my most played track of 2011 via last.fm

ciderpress, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:21 (fourteen years ago)

this one is ok. i like it in a "will never listen to this again" kind of way

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

Also wow this 2NE1 track is off the hook. THIS is what the last MIA album should have sounded like.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

oh god i hope this doesn't presage a top 30 full of destroyer songs

ilm love for that godawful album makes me want to rescind everything nice i've ever said about the board

his voice is so intolerably fey, it's just...feeble feeble music, this really weak attempt to create vibes

HATE THIS SHIT SO MUCH

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

I actually like the sound of this Destroyer album, except for the vocals, which ruin it for me. (I mostly I don't like rock vocals of any sort, I guess.)

John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

This is the Destroyer I voted for (other candidate was "Suicide Demo for Kara Walker)...like the John Maus I enjoy the vibe of the album but it doesn't keep my attention for the whole length.

CJ Fam Club (seandalai), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

I actually like the sound of this Destroyer album

(The part I got through anyway.)

John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

Is there a version of this Destroyer song with the Fucked Up guy singing?

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

lol. if only

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

lex posting very much in character there...buckle up, you'll get through this!

CJ Fam Club (seandalai), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

this is okay-ish; I did not get into any Destroyer this year

oh god i hope this doesn't presage a top 30 full of destroyer songs

I feel like this is a little silly

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

x-posts:

With guest rap by Pitbull.

John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

i can actually respect the fucked up singer so much more even if i can't listen to him

there is nothing to respect about destroyer

i've disliked several songs on this list but this is the first instance of RAGE AND HATRED i believe

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:25 (fourteen years ago)

Everything about this Destroyer record is... slimy.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:25 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not a Bejar fan, but him doing yacht rock pet shop boys is kinda interesting.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

^I'd buy that

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

Yacht rock PSB deserves better treatment than this.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:27 (fourteen years ago)

Bejar's voice is still a dealbreaker for me, but Kaputt is musically the best album he's made.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:28 (fourteen years ago)

That Destroyer track is pretty boring guys, come on.

emil.y, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:28 (fourteen years ago)

HATE THIS SHIT SO MUCH

Yep. Love lex's hyperactive bouncing from "YESSSS!!!! <3 <3 <3" to this.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:30 (fourteen years ago)

If anything is the definition of pastiche in this thread, it's this.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:30 (fourteen years ago)

Bejar's ultra-nasal voice can be as much of a distancing effect as hardcore shouting. Maybe it's an acquired taste. I do think that on this album he's figured out the best way to use his voice though.

o. nate, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:30 (fourteen years ago)

"slimy" is a good descriptor

donna rouge, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:30 (fourteen years ago)

Kaputt is like a lovingly curated museum exhibition of every single oily 80s sophisti-pop record that ever made my skin crawl. Yacht rock PSB? If only.

Meme Rogers (DL), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:31 (fourteen years ago)

Much prefer "Savage Night at the Opera", but I do like this. There is something fascinatingly repellent about the '80s cocktail bar feel of the whole thing... but somehow I'm not put off.

DavidM, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:31 (fourteen years ago)

every single oily 80s sophisti-pop record that ever made my skin crawl

I'm a big fan of the sound, so it may be why I'm giving him more of a pass than I ordinarily would.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:32 (fourteen years ago)

why would you pick up a saxophone in 2011 and make it do this?

rob, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:33 (fourteen years ago)

I used yacht rock PSB as a shorthand for what I hear him aiming for. After one listen of one song I can't judge how the album, or even this song, achieves that goal.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:33 (fourteen years ago)

saxophones were trendy this year actually!

ciderpress, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:34 (fourteen years ago)

kinda hated every other destroyer record maybe b/c of bejar's voice but this one uses it perfectly imo.

omar little, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 18:34 (fourteen years ago)
