I can totally deal with Damian's vocals in short bursts, but whole Fucked Up albums are too much for me.

Yeah, I kind of like this Fucked Up song. I don't think the sweet female vox would work so well if not paired with shouty shouty male ones, though. Don't think he sucks at all, his vocals are very much aligned with a tradition here. If you don't like that style, then you don't like it, but it doesn't "suck".

also re: "only good guitar record this year" - maybe it would help if you listened to some guitar records, eh?

No fucking way. Though most of the 'guitar records' in this list are pretty pants.

Claiming Damian's vocals suck is pretty much besides the point.

I think screaming works in the following circumstances:

- with really aggressive music
- in short bursts as punctuation/interjection
- when directly juxtaposed with another, more conventional vocalist

two minutes of this dude screaming, and not even actually screaming all that forcefully, over a song that doesn't really support it until the female vocal comes in is not my thing at all

(please note: by "direct juxtaposition" in that previous post I mean "one on top of the other")

It sounds nothing like Blink 182 ffs lex. Its just as dismissive of you to say shit like that as it would be for someone to claim that all house beats sound alike.

No I don't want to act like a big h/c stan, I don't really rep for the genre (even though I was bigging up Weekend Nachos on that other thread) - but take out the vocals and Queen Of Hearts is a proper pop song. It's the vocals that trick you into thinking it's this big hoary angry track, but it's a love song essentially, and a sweet one at that.

The female vocals in the song are done by the girl from Cults, right?

Tbh, I'm not much of a fan of hardcore-style singing -- I like Fucked Up mostly for the melodic intertwining guitars.

I mean, despite my rep it's not like I am averse to songs with people screaming on them; this is one of my favorite songs of all time.

(although note that he's actually screaming on notes)

I agree! That's why I said first that I like the song itself, and I like their songwriting in general quite a bit. I've had a problem with his vocals for years because of the hardcore associations with that style of singing.

My only moan about FU (and the album in general) is that they went to all that work to make a concept album with a story and setting, and yet all the lyrics are basically indecipherable and all the songs are, well not "the same" but samey - there's no relief or release through the whole record and much as I can enjoy one/two songs max, I can't listen to a whole 70 mins.

Voted for this too! Yay! My number #8. So it's a decent tune - big bass sound but not too wobblecore. Singing is cool as well. Just generally like it.

Love the Fucked Up album, voted for this song,(my first pick to hit the list) but I get how the vocal might grate to those not into hardcore and such. By the end of the album I'm tired of it. His vocals remind of Sick Of It All.

If he was attempting to scream on pitches, that alone would make it much much more listenable to me; as it stands, the beginning of that Fucked Up song is like listening to the "WAKE ME UP!" part of Evanescense's "Bring Me To Life" looped for two minutes.

It's not even the vocal quality as much as it is the full-on contempt for the voice as a musical instrument, really.

"Full Attention" coming in after this is kind of hilarious and yeah, actually I think dude's vocals could work really well on a track like this.

Or using it in a way that you don't approve of. If I make a track by hitting a de-tuned piano with a brick, that isn't me displaying contempt for the piano as an instrument, it's me using it in a way you don't.
