only good guitar record this year tbh
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:54 (fourteen years ago)
Thought the dude on the far right in the Fucked Up photo was Dr3w D.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:55 (fourteen years ago)
Not sure if it's due to being in the context of some really trying tracks on this list but Friday sounds better now than when it came out.
― Cashmere Combabe, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:55 (fourteen years ago)
Yay, great song.
― monster_xero, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:55 (fourteen years ago)
I voted for this - my number 5. Take or leave the overlong album, but this is pure pop-punk fun! Supremely catchy, but matey's vocals give it the edge and then her singing comes in and it's a Bangles song. Insane! <3 Def one of the best songs of the year.
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:55 (fourteen years ago)
it is really a shame about this vocalist
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:56 (fourteen years ago)
today's been wonderfully diverse with each new entry :)
― nathey, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:56 (fourteen years ago)
Dunno, sometimes just shouting really loudly is enough.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:56 (fourteen years ago)
i got 25 seconds into "fucked up" what is that voice i cannot even
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:56 (fourteen years ago)
back to "friday" :)
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:57 (fourteen years ago)
okay the female singer should be singing this entire song
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:57 (fourteen years ago)
lex posts very much in character
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:57 (fourteen years ago)
The songs Fucked Up write are great, but can't get past that dude bellowing.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:57 (fourteen years ago)
lex, skip to 1:55
you guys are pussies. what is wrong with the vocalist??
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:57 (fourteen years ago)
Fucked Up sounds like Thin Lizzy, or is that just me?
No fucking way. Though most of the 'guitar records' in this list are pretty pants.
― emil.y, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:58 (fourteen years ago)
Take or leave the overlong album
Yeah, the album felt kind of oppressively wearying to me, but I like individual tracks. Prefer "Under My Nose" and "The Other Shoe," but "Queen of Hearts" is fine.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:58 (fourteen years ago)
Oh posted twice sorry
― Cashmere Combabe, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:58 (fourteen years ago)
This is alright, think I preferred the Yuck song though.
― CJ Fam Club (seandalai), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:59 (fourteen years ago)
he sucks?
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:59 (fourteen years ago)
I can totally deal with Damian's vocals in short bursts, but whole Fucked Up albums are too much for me.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:59 (fourteen years ago)
fucked up is cool i voted for the album not the trax though
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:59 (fourteen years ago)
Up to this last point, today has been like reading the Bristol stool chart tbh
― Derartu Cthulhu (NickB), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:59 (fourteen years ago)
sometimes you just wanna hear a guy screaming his head off for 90 mins...
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:00 (fourteen years ago)
I did my time with hardcore and can't say I want to go back there, even for good tunes.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:00 (fourteen years ago)
some people on this board are so bloody anti-rock they come out the other side. what is wrong with the vocals? for the style of music they don't suck at all.
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:00 (fourteen years ago)
Fucked Up turning dog latin into a tough guy.
― John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:01 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, I kind of like this Fucked Up song. I don't think the sweet female vox would work so well if not paired with shouty shouty male ones, though. Don't think he sucks at all, his vocals are very much aligned with a tradition here. If you don't like that style, then you don't like it, but it doesn't "suck".
― emil.y, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:01 (fourteen years ago)
also re: "only good guitar record this year" - maybe it would help if you listened to some guitar records, eh?

Great. I know where to go next time I need to hear a frog croak "I couldn’t take the pains of the underclass, trying to smile through gritted teeth."
― Plato’s The Cave In Claymation (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:01 (fourteen years ago)
ah yes if you start at 1:55 it is better, though not "good" because the backing is still like blink 182
OH GOD HE STARTED SHOUTING AGAIN SHUT THE FUCK UP AARGH OFF OFF GET OFF MY STEREO
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:02 (fourteen years ago)
Claiming Damian's vocals suck is pretty much besides the point.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:02 (fourteen years ago)
I think screaming works in the following circumstances:
- with really aggressive music- in short bursts as punctuation/interjection- when directly juxtaposed with another, more conventional vocalist
two minutes of this dude screaming, and not even actually screaming all that forcefully, over a song that doesn't really support it until the female vocal comes in is not my thing at all
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:02 (fourteen years ago)
(please note: by "direct juxtaposition" in that previous post I mean "one on top of the other")
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:03 (fourteen years ago)
It sounds nothing like Blink 182 ffs lex. Its just as dismissive of you to say shit like that as it would be for someone to claim that all house beats sound alike.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:03 (fourteen years ago)
i like this track! though the guy's vocals were a bit of a shock at first
― teledyldonix, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:03 (fourteen years ago)
i agree with everybody
― nathey, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:03 (fourteen years ago)
I think he bellows rather well. Just not my cup of tea anymore.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:04 (fourteen years ago)
It's actually like Andrew WK rather than Blink 182 but that's hardl going to convince Lex.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:04 (fourteen years ago)
Seriously, if the vocals are the dealbreaker for many of you, try the second youtube linked up there. It's got kids!
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:04 (fourteen years ago)
On second listen I do actually f/w this. Probably would have been obsessed with it when I was 15.

No I don't want to act like a big h/c stan, I don't really rep for the genre (even though I was bigging up Weekend Nachos on that other thread) - but take out the vocals and Queen Of Hearts is a proper pop song. It's the vocals that trick you into thinking it's this big hoary angry track, but it's a love song essentially, and a sweet one at that.
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:05 (fourteen years ago)
The female vocals in the song are done by the girl from Cults, right?
― MarkoP, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:05 (fourteen years ago)
Tbh, I'm not much of a fan of hardcore-style singing -- I like Fucked Up mostly for the melodic intertwining guitars.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:05 (fourteen years ago)
I mean, despite my rep it's not like I am averse to songs with people screaming on them; this is one of my favorite songs of all time.
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:06 (fourteen years ago)
(although note that he's actually screaming on notes)
aghhhh i hate andrew wk so much

lol @ all reactions to this track
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:07 (fourteen years ago)
Couldn't make out a word, but from transcribed lyrics, I kinda wonder if Fucked Up is going to follow the Crass path or the Chumbawamba path...
