Voted 'Friday'. Not particularly high on my ballot, but a worthy song to place. It's no Nyan Cat, though.
― emil.y, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:38 (fourteen years ago)
it was definitely one of the most FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN threads on ilx last year
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:39 (fourteen years ago)
It's not a stretch to me to think that "crawl before you ball" is kind of demeaning in context and not the innocent analogue to "walk before you run" that DJP suggests, even if you don't think Kanye literally wants the girl to get down on her knees and crawl. In other words, I read Nitsuh's "prostrate" as being just as metaphorical as "crawl" is.
many xps

am glad that Nyan Cat placed higher than Friday

nyan cat will be number 1 though right?
― nathey, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:41 (fourteen years ago)
I'll admit soft spot for Friday (Fucked), which wouldn't exist without Ark Music Factory.

cmon haters friday had to be represented, u know it was v. important to the year.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:41 (fourteen years ago)
Like I said, it's really fucking easy to make Kanye look terrible given the amount of ammunition he freely hands people (note me not saying a word about the bathroom stall line, for example).
I assumed he was talking about that whole section. Those are the lines right before the bathroom stall one, after all. I mean, I understood that whole scenario to be included in what he was saying.

― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:42 (fourteen years ago)
This thread moves too fast, but let me muster another quick defense of Wilco for the kneejerk "lol dad rock" haters:
"One Sunday Morning" -- at 12 minutes, cyclical, and gently atmospheric -- isn't that different from a lot of dance tracks in its structure and effect.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:43 (fourteen years ago)
partying partying YEAH
it's all coming back to me <3
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:44 (fourteen years ago)
Then why isn't the argument "why is Kanye using demeaning imagery to balk at making a commitment"?
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:44 (fourteen years ago)
definitely too low, i was hoping for top 10. happy to see it though :)
― teledyldonix, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:44 (fourteen years ago)
I don't care if it's dadrock or not, I've just never liked a single song I've heard by Wilco. I think I may have listened to this track when I was sifting through the nominations, but I don't remember if I made it all the way through.
― John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:44 (fourteen years ago)
I was disappointed when it fell out of the top 20 never to return. :( xp
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:44 (fourteen years ago)
yay, Pitbull. My #2.
idg "Niggas in Paris". Voted for "No Church..." instead, which i hoped might sneak in to the 77, but unlikely now.
i realized this like two months in but the album would've been legit great if it was a jay solo album -- it would've been way, way better than what they ended up putting out and way, way better than anything jay's put out since the black albumI said this on the WTT thread in week 1 and got shouted at! (Not by you, J0rdan)
"Friday": pfffft

Can't believe people voted for this over "Ordinary Pop Star"
― CJ Fam Club (seandalai), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:45 (fourteen years ago)
Sorry Rebecca Black, but I kind of prefer the Weeknd's "Glass Table Girls" for "fun fun fun fun."

"Haters, said I'll see you later/Can't talk to you right now/I'm getting my paper"
― Plato’s The Cave In Claymation (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:46 (fourteen years ago)
xps but I'm in rant mode now.
The one where someone needs to prostrate herself (and run to the bathroom stall) to prove she’s worth West’s attention? The one that makes his sex life sound like it operates on the same basic principles as Fear Factor?
I mean, there is nothing metaphorical in this representation of the lyric. nabisco is good with words; I presume that he wrote what he intended to say, and what he's saying here is half-right but the part that's wrong is REALLY wrong, considering that there's a cogent, coherent argument to be made there (see my previous post).
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:46 (fourteen years ago)
ugh the rb thread was so much fun. actually the whole weekend when friday got big was so much fun.

it was fun fun fun fun
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:48 (fourteen years ago)
there is nothing metaphorical in this representation of the lyric
The formulation "to prostrate oneself" is a pretty standard metaphor though, some might say cliche even.

DJP, the thrust behind Nabisco's argument wasn't "Kanye is a horrible person", it's that "when it comes to exploring these BIG concepts, Kanye tends towards lapsing into cliche"--"crawl before you ball" as "walk before you run" isn't necessarily much more profound "crawl before you ball" as some Kanye-as-Ping Jiang trope
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:52 (fourteen years ago)
Not not sure if it's in the context of some really trying tracks today but Friday sounds better right now than when it came out

Not sure if it's due to being in the context of some really trying tracks on this list but Friday sounds better now than when it came out.
― Cashmere Combabe, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:55 (fourteen years ago)
Yay, great song.
― monster_xero, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:55 (fourteen years ago)
I voted for this - my number 5. Take or leave the overlong album, but this is pure pop-punk fun! Supremely catchy, but matey's vocals give it the edge and then her singing comes in and it's a Bangles song. Insane! <3 Def one of the best songs of the year.
