Still not heard a K-Pop song that I really like. This is OK, but I don't get why it stands out for the ppl hyping this stuff.

'Polite' in J-Pop more often than not is synonymous with 'completely fucking insane'.

2NE1 vs. C&C Music Factory and it's kind of astounding.
I feel like the only person who's really big on the US scene at the moment who is really going for a sonic palette like what's happening in this 2NE1 song is Lady Gaga; there is something beyond just the synth timbre that is really evoking early 90s hoover rave bumping up against acid and pop music that is essentially aural catnip to me, only with a stronger editor behind the song to avoid Lady Gaga's songs' unfortunate tendency to become scattershot and unfocused.

I enjoyed the Chicken McBites comercial before "I Am the One." Kind of a washed out by sun 70s film look.

Gotye reminds me of dEUS a little bit actually...

emil.y - that video was gonzo, but the sonics were super sugary and squeaky clean.

I really loathe that Gotye/Kimbra song. She's a pox on New Zealand music, ugh, and this spend far too long at #1. emil.y OTM.
2NE1 is great - I've dipped into the kpop threads but hadn't chanced upon this.
― etc, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:10 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah I got that feeling too. Some of it sounds like a boringified "Serpentine".

Again - Wilco are still putting out records? Hm.

xposts Yep, definitely like a smoothed out version of something off In A Bar Under The Sea.

The visuals may be crazy but the song is pretty reserved/restrained; I do not get insane unless I actually watch the video.
or in other words, EZ OTM

lol I know I've heard Wilco before but they apparently made absolutely no impression on me because I'm surprised this song sounds like this
I am also 100% certain that within 15 seconds of finishing this song I won't remember how it goes
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:13 (fourteen years ago)
The Wilco is a fine shuffle (something I like in general) but damn, it never ends!
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:14 (fourteen years ago)
xxxxxxp There are no standard k-pop or j-pop sounds anymore but generalizing you could say that k-pop is about hip-hop meeting club music and j-pop about rock meeting bubble pop. Maybe. I made that up now, though. Doesn't really account for Nakata's j-contributions. I think both can get "insane" sonically but in different ways. PonPonPon is clearly amazing.
― abcfsk, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:14 (fourteen years ago)
lol @ the guy second from the left
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:15 (fourteen years ago)
Also, I prefer J-Pop, but that's because J-Pop sounds like J-Pop, whereas K-Pop sounds like UK/US pop but in a foreign language.
Yeah, almost all of the K-pop I've heard just sounds like UK/US pop I don't like to begin with. I haven't heard a ton of it, but absolutely none of it has hooked me in, so I am not inspired to dig into it.
― John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:15 (fourteen years ago)
do we have a thread for old rock guys with that haircut?
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:15 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, it would be a great little shuffle track at 3 mins. At 12, it's fucking with me.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:16 (fourteen years ago)
Wilco - yawwwwwwwwwwwwn
Re: something like Ponponpon, yeah, perhaps it isn't the best example of complete nuts J-Pop sonically, though I think it does still stand with my point that J-Pop is much more culturally different to Western pop than K-Pop is. Perfume and Capsule are *relatively* Westernised, but a) they're fairly recent concerns, J-Pop has been a thing for a very long time, and b) they're hella mainstream.

i'm not particularly "into" k-pop, i hear a handleful of the bigger tracks of the year, but come the fuck on, "i am the best" is ridiculously good

Wilco are pretty boring, aren't they?
That said I haven't heard the new album, maybe they've gone speed-ragga or something?

it's kind of hilarious that right when I was submitting the post about how the J-Pop video may look insane but sounds totally normal, I flipped back to the video in time to catch the appearance of floating skulls singing along with her
When I think "mental J-Pop", I think of Tomoe Shinohara (which probably tells you when the last time I paid attention to J-Pop was)
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:18 (fourteen years ago)
also jesus fuck how long is the fucking Wilco song
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:19 (fourteen years ago)
seriously, I think Wilco is a bit old-hat for p4k to be even paying homage for him, but LJ made kind of a deal about this song in the rolling dilettante convocation thread a few months back
I didnt end up voting for it, but I'm glad other ppl did. And I am roffling at it being juxtaposed with 2NE1 (which is great obv)
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:19 (fourteen years ago)
i didn't know wilco had any music out this yr lol
― teledyldonix, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:19 (fourteen years ago)
Probably the best thing resulting from the Gotye/Kimbra was this PNC track, which samples/screws'n'chops the chorus:http://soundcloud.com/pnc-1/pnc-stranger-pt-1-2
