Gotye: Someone played it to me at the weekend. I was on holiday with a group of people I only vaguely know and it seems that a key part of what they grew up with was what I can only describe as '90s MOR - Counting Crows, Matchbox 20, Jimmy Eat World and stuff like that. This kind of fits into it. I can imagine my sister absolutely loving this, the same way she did "Shape Of My Heart" (Sting) and "Lemon Tree" (Fool's Garden) back in the day. So yes, a lot of that stuff was revolting, but maybe the reason it works is because it taps into a style of music that kind of faded away come the 2000s - Seal, Sting, I dunno what else.

totally underrated by the single jukebox, btw
This would have been my #1 if I had done a tracks list.
This being 2NE1
The weird glory of ILM...
― MikoMcha, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:51 (fourteen years ago)

I Am The Best was my no.1.
― Mohombi Khush Hua (ShariVari), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:52 (fourteen years ago)
The first tune on this list that i've never even heard of. And I absolutely love it.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:52 (fourteen years ago)
amazing
― nathey, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:53 (fourteen years ago)
Korea is a country I always intend to pay more attention to, practically every musical act* I've encountered from there has been incredibly charming
*note: this would be 2 whole acts
― I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:53 (fourteen years ago)
i can't connect to k-pop for some reason. i think i'd love it if it was in english. i recognise this is a failing on my part, not the song's, but...i just never wanted to listen to it

I'm assuming from the outfits that this record includes ultra-processed guitars, synths and robot vocals, right?
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:55 (fourteen years ago)
Maybe a motorbike or chainsaw noise here and there?
it being in korean is such a huge plus for me. for one, i don't have to hear nearly as many completely moronic lyrics, and also the korean language is just super catchy, especially with random english phrases thrown in
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:55 (fourteen years ago)
Darn, EZ Snappin, you should have. Think this could've gone higher with some more promotion.
― abcfsk, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:55 (fourteen years ago)
one of the best parts of k-pop is the netizens, some of the comments on allkpop are incredible
― nathey, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:56 (fourteen years ago)
Okay this is wonderful!
― pandemic, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:57 (fourteen years ago)
kudos to frank kogan, he was going on about k-pop YEARS ago before it randomly became a thing this year
― tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:58 (fourteen years ago)
I definitely would've voted it up on my ballot if I'd heard it in time.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:58 (fourteen years ago)
I really should have voted, even if only for 10 tracks. My bad.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:59 (fourteen years ago)
hm also I appear to have a new girlfriend in the lead singer
she even was living in Boston 9 years ago, while she was at college

I think I prefer the sound of J-Pop to K-Pop, the latter being a bit too abrasive for me, but yeah this is excellent.
― Angrrau Birds (seandalai), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:01 (fourteen years ago)
Oh dear, I was thinking that Gotye song was like a more insipid Jens, kinda mumblecore boring but not offensively bad, then that chorus comes in. Fucking hell this is AWFUL. Quite possibly the worst song in the whole countdown.
2NE1 is K-Pop, right? It's pretty rad! Also, cute kitten in the video.
Uh, I wrote this ages ago and multiple xposts, but I'm just going to leave it as it stands.
― emil.y, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:01 (fourteen years ago)
xp! the guy has what strikes me as a very 80s voice for some reason...Phil Collinsesque?

Peter Gabriel actually
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:02 (fourteen years ago)
The abrasiveness adds to the appeal. J-Pop can get too sugary for me.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:02 (fourteen years ago)
Also, I prefer J-Pop, but that's because J-Pop sounds like J-Pop, whereas K-Pop sounds like UK/US pop but in a foreign language. That doesn't mean that song isn't awesome, though.
― emil.y, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:03 (fourteen years ago)
J-Pop is far too polite for my liking, yeah.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:03 (fourteen years ago)
Not sure there's such a thing as a standard J-Pop or K-Pop sound any more.
― Mohombi Khush Hua (ShariVari), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:05 (fourteen years ago)
Um... POLITE?

I voted for Kimbra's debut album, but I somehow have avoided "Somebody That I Used to Know" until now. I even sort of thought I had listened to it, but I must have just played the beginning before and decided I didn't want to hear it. It's good, nothing I'd listen to a lot. I feel kind of like Dan about it. Re lex's comments: I'm okay with the prospects of Kimbra nude, don't particularly want to see vulnerable naked Gotye.

i'd always associate perfume with 'the j-pop sound' (eurodance) and snsd as 'the k-pop sound' (cheerleader pop)
― nathey, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:07 (fourteen years ago)
Still not heard a K-Pop song that I really like. This is OK, but I don't get why it stands out for the ppl hyping this stuff.
― Jeff W, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:07 (fourteen years ago)
'Polite' in J-Pop more often than not is synonymous with 'completely fucking insane'.
― emil.y, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:07 (fourteen years ago)
This mash-up is relevant to the current discussion:

2NE1 vs. C&C Music Factory and it's kind of astounding.
I feel like the only person who's really big on the US scene at the moment who is really going for a sonic palette like what's happening in this 2NE1 song is Lady Gaga; there is something beyond just the synth timbre that is really evoking early 90s hoover rave bumping up against acid and pop music that is essentially aural catnip to me, only with a stronger editor behind the song to avoid Lady Gaga's songs' unfortunate tendency to become scattershot and unfocused.

I enjoyed the Chicken McBites comercial before "I Am the One." Kind of a washed out by sun 70s film look.
― John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:09 (fourteen years ago)
Gotye reminds me of dEUS a little bit actually...
