Despite knowing this is from Yamaha, my brain sung this to the tune of "Muah" by Electrik Red à la "I'm not a stripper but I dance like that / I'm not a stripper but where that money at".

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:25 (fourteen years ago)

Love Schoolin' Life, prefer it to anything on the actual album, even Countdown.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:25 (fourteen years ago)

hey jf are we doing 20 today?

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:26 (fourteen years ago)

20 today, but I'm starting to lean towards spreading the top 20 over Thursday and Friday. I just have too much to do that I'm not doing.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:28 (fourteen years ago)

feelin ya

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:28 (fourteen years ago)

My number 1!

Tim F, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:28 (fourteen years ago)

"schoolin' life"!!!!

feels so right that this placed by itself given its bonus track status contra the (a bit unwarranted) mockery of B's lyrics upthread, i think "schoolin' life" is genuinely kinda inspiring life wisdom. it's so celebratory and inclusive. i love the ring of self-mockery in the "this is for them sexysomethings / that body won't always get you out of everything" section - like it's something B herself had to learn. i want to play this song to anyone going through self-doubt. and i think i might actually just print out the last few lines and stick them to my wall:

there's not a real way to live this, for real
just remember to stay relentless
don't stop running until it's finished
it's up to you, the rest isn't written

<3 <3 thx b <3

Surprised to see that one. I didn't think it was even known outside Holland and Belgium tbh

future debts collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:33 (fourteen years ago)

what is this?

Angrrau Birds (seandalai), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:34 (fourteen years ago)

Huge in Australia apparently, and it did well on the Singles Jukebox.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:34 (fourteen years ago)

50 million views and I've never heard of it!

pandemic, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:34 (fourteen years ago)

This song is surprisingly heading for the top 10 here in the UK at the moment.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:35 (fourteen years ago)

... huh

I have no idea what I actually think of this. It's good at what it's doing, but I am not sure I ever am in the mood for something like this.

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:35 (fourteen years ago)

Those Beyonce lyrics read like trite self-help book nonsense on the page but they sound great in the song.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:36 (fourteen years ago)

the video for this song is very unsettling

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:36 (fourteen years ago)

I don't hate it but the vocals sound like Sting to me, kinda.

pandemic, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:36 (fourteen years ago)

was wondering where i'd heard the name gotye before, found an elderly supermayer remix from a few years ago in my itunes. i am not into this...twee mumblecore folky stuff though. and why are naked people such a thing in indie videos these days? put it away we don't want to see YOUR bodies

tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:37 (fourteen years ago)

I thought Gotye was only popular because of Triple J, but his shows always seem to sell out here in the Netherlands. Wikipedia informs me he's 'Belgian-Australian'.

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:37 (fourteen years ago)

Actually it's growing on me a bit.

I was just about to post exactly this. It's especially noticeable in the chorus.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:38 (fourteen years ago)

xp! the guy has what strikes me as a very 80s voice for some reason...Phil Collinsesque?

Angrrau Birds (seandalai), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:38 (fourteen years ago)

This song is surprisingly heading for the top 10 here in the UK at the moment.

it sounds like the kind of thing that's SO on some ipod advert or something

tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:39 (fourteen years ago)

"gotye, play desert rose!"

nathey, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:39 (fourteen years ago)

"Somebody That I Used to Know" is the only song that I voted for that I hadn't actually heard until 2012.

jaymc, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:40 (fourteen years ago)

It does sound like Sting but hey we gave Jamie Woon a free pass last year for channeling the spirit of Phil Collins.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:43 (fourteen years ago)

imo if Sting were making songs like this in 2011, he wouldn't be the punchline he is. Maybe it does sound like ipod commercial fodder, maybe it's a little mumblecore, but I think it's well put together and I love that synth bit that comes in around the chorus.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:43 (fourteen years ago)

Before reaching back to the '80s progenitors, the first thing this reminded me of was an acoustic version of Twin Shadow.

jaymc, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

imo if Sting were making songs like this in 2011, he wouldn't be the punchline he is.

He still would have recorded "Russians".

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

this is like evolutionary adult contemporary, huh?

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

this is surprisingly not hateful.

Jamie_ATP, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:45 (fourteen years ago)

Have you seen Sting lately? He now looks like one of those bald Egyptian cats, it's fucking scary.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:45 (fourteen years ago)

xp haha my thought exactly

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:45 (fourteen years ago)

you know what i really like about it? it just *ends* logically but not abruptly.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:46 (fourteen years ago)

He still would have recorded "Russians".

touché

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:46 (fourteen years ago)

(I think this song is very pleasant actually but yeah it's totally this year's Feist 1-2-3-4, which I also liked)

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:46 (fourteen years ago)

I like this song but it takes too long to get to the good part.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:47 (fourteen years ago)

Bookies are taking bets at $1.10 odds for this to win JJJ Hottest 100 tomorrow. I feel so prophetic.

Tim F, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:47 (fourteen years ago)

this beyonce song is super silly btw

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:48 (fourteen years ago)

What's the betting like for the ILM top 10?

oh this is badass

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:51 (fourteen years ago)

Gotye: Someone played it to me at the weekend. I was on holiday with a group of people I only vaguely know and it seems that a key part of what they grew up with was what I can only describe as '90s MOR - Counting Crows, Matchbox 20, Jimmy Eat World and stuff like that. This kind of fits into it. I can imagine my sister absolutely loving this, the same way she did "Shape Of My Heart" (Sting) and "Lemon Tree" (Fool's Garden) back in the day. So yes, a lot of that stuff was revolting, but maybe the reason it works is because it taps into a style of music that kind of faded away come the 2000s - Seal, Sting, I dunno what else.

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:51 (fourteen years ago)

totally underrated by the single jukebox, btw

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:51 (fourteen years ago)

This would have been my #1 if I had done a tracks list.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:51 (fourteen years ago)

This being 2NE1

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 14:51 (fourteen years ago)
