SOPA/PILLA (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 21:22 (fourteen years ago)

well I mean we still have the top 40

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 21:33 (fourteen years ago)

I am still hoping for strong Schoolby Q/Kendrick Lamar presence

also lol Jay-Z/Kanye

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 21:35 (fourteen years ago)

True, just a random observation. I really haven't heard many of these tracks. My scope was really narrow in '11, this is helping to round it out a little.

SOPA/PILLA (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 21:36 (fourteen years ago)

not to mention Kreayspawn xp

Derartu Cthulhu (NickB), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 21:36 (fourteen years ago)

Just getting home, and I just gotta say, there's a lot to like on this list.

MikoMcha, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 21:39 (fourteen years ago)

Waka Flocka Flame - this is just boring really, no bounce, no rhythmic interest, the beat just slugs along the floor. Painfully limited MCs can work over the right beat but this isn't it. Whole thing just feels lazy.

Yeah but I have zero interest in arguing with you so just pretend I'm not.

I Love Pedantry (D-40), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 21:51 (fourteen years ago)

Love how many of these are outside the P&J top 200 or DNP. By this stage I've gone through so many EOY lists that even the records I love end up evoking an "Oh you again" response and I feel like I've caught up on everything. Then every year the ILX poll rolls out and I have no idea what most of the tracks are and standard critics' favourites are bobbing around amid a bunch of dance tunes and it feels like even after listening to so many records on so many lists there was a whole other 2011 happening, and one that it turns out I love. So that's good.

Meme Rogers (DL), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 22:06 (fourteen years ago)

Don't know if it's been suggested yet, but how about a general all-encompassing rolling thread where people post up key things they or other people have been digging on the other threads? A kind of music "excelsiorism".

For instance, I wanted to start a thread about the Weekend Nachos I just listened to spellbound after reading about it on the metal countdown. I'm not into metalcore in any big way at all, but I'm sure there are loads of other cool things on that thread. Still, I'd also like to talk about it outside of the metal thread realm.

Thoughts on this?

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 22:07 (fourteen years ago)

AFAIK there is no reason not to just start threads about the stuff you want to talk about, under whatever format you think would be interesting

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 22:09 (fourteen years ago)

like, if you want to so a "random musical evangelism 2012" thread, go for it

if you want to start a thread about Weekend Nachos*, go for it

* I now can't get the phrase "I WANT WEEKEND NACHOS, NOT WEEKDAY NACHOS" out of my head

There was this:
Rolling dilettante convocation 2011

jaymc, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 22:12 (fourteen years ago)

(dancing bear in this video FTW!)

― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, January 24, 2012 9:31 AM (2 hours ago)

lmao for a second i thought you were referring to the very NSFW 1st google result for "dancing bear"

⚓ (gr8080), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 22:13 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I was gonna mention the dilettante convocation, but it never got that much interest. Personally I liked it, would be good if people wanted to do more of that thing.

emil.y, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 22:16 (fourteen years ago)

Just a wild guess here, but maybe the name was slightly off-putting?

Derartu Cthulhu (NickB), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 22:20 (fourteen years ago)

How about "The generalists's circle jerk"?

John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 22:23 (fourteen years ago)

NB. "Taking Over The Dancefloor" is not too slow, it's (relative) slowness is the entire point! This is what makes dancing to moombahton so fun, especially in public settings with really hot people.

Tim F, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 22:32 (fourteen years ago)

its >_<

Tim F, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

A rolling thread about everything would be pretty difficult to keep up with. What'a wrong with just starting a thread about an amazing song?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 22:36 (fourteen years ago)

^^^ some of my favourite threads

Tim F, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 22:39 (fourteen years ago)

So far I'm 1/25 and I have a feeling the 13 dance tracks I voted for got shut out altogether. :(

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

on the plus side, will be very interested to see yr ballot, Rev

rob, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 22:45 (fourteen years ago)

i'm glad i voted this year because i really regretted seeing the results play out last year w/o having a say in them

i'm a little miffed the nominations happened on the sandbox instead of waiting till real ilx was back, but i guess that's my own fault

we should do a "2011 tracks you loved but weren't on the ballot" thread

You're forgetting "A$$" tho. And to be fair, the version of "Nobody" that leaked last year didn't even have Quik's verse.

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:19 (fourteen years ago)

im not sure ringtone cru really rallied around anything this year

I Love Pedantry (D-40), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:23 (fourteen years ago)

of today's tracks, i voted for 'romance' and 'hey moon.' i didn't discover 'hey moon' until i was going through the spotify tracks playlist and at first i thought it was kind of dirge-y and blah. but when it was over i wanted to hear it again and it ended up growing on me quickly.

really happy to see '1 + 1' place even though i didn't vote for it. i love the production on the studio version, but i think i might prefer the live dressing room version someone posted in the album thread. also happy to see katy b even though this wasn't the single i voted for.

ban opinions (reddening), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:24 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah true xp and xxp.

SOPA/PILLA (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:25 (fourteen years ago)

I didn't really carry the goon flag at all this year. Even the rap I voted for was like Trina and Ying Yang Twinz. I ended up having to cut Trouble and Cousin Fik at the last moment. :(

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:29 (fourteen years ago)

Lots here to fritter away the last of my monthly Spotify minutes on (yeah, YouTube - but the sound's always inferior there, isn't it?). Maus track is pretty and reminds me a little of a smearier Mag Fields circa House of Tomorrow.

Invisible Conga People, Danny Daze, Talabot/Glasser all good, second GGD track a pleasant surprise; Bush and Battles standouts but I knew I already liked those (I'm very out of touch).

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:33 (fourteen years ago)

I love that Invisible Conga People track so much.

"Blue" Meme Tyranny (WmC), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:35 (fourteen years ago)

think the most depressing thing now is the impending inescapable odd future invasion of the top 40

Jamie_ATP, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:51 (fourteen years ago)

i'm 9/37

wait what

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:53 (fourteen years ago)

"yonkers" and "novacane" MIGHT be in the top 40, but that's hardly an invasion

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:53 (fourteen years ago)

the full length version of the nadia oh track is great, such a weird combination of chintzy and epic. tim f otm about the slowness being totally key.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

otm, they had nothing else of note. xp

SOPA/PILLA (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

I didn't vote, but of things that placed I would've voted for:

65 - JOHN TALABOT ft. GLASSER "Families" (204 Points, 7 Votes)
51 - KONSHENS "Nuh Pull It Up" (230 Points, 6 Votes)
47 - KATY B "Easy Please Me" (244 Points, 9 Votes)
41 - THE RAPTURE "How Deep Is Your Love?" (257 Points, 11 Votes)

DO NOT CALL (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

i'm doing p good this year i voted for invisible conga people, the two john talabot tracks, the nina sky and the benoit and sergio one

judith, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:56 (fourteen years ago)

everything i didn't vote for is super terrible

judith, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:56 (fourteen years ago)

so upthread I said "lol Kanye/Jay-Z" and then went back and spent the rest of the day listening to Watch The Throne, which is maybe the most overtly political album I bought all last year and really, really, really fucking excellent

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:58 (fourteen years ago)

love "Banana Ripple". It was my #2. It just really hit me at some point in the late summer.

encarta it (Gukbe), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:59 (fourteen years ago)

really hoping that Seany Mac - One Of Those Days features

Jamie_ATP, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:59 (fourteen years ago)

I bet it will
