Voted the frank ocean album v high on my ballot, and, i think 'novacane'. Love this track too.
i'm not nor would i want to be a critic

pandemic, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:09 (fourteen years ago)

Why does critical acclaim play any part in your Frank Ocean hate. I mean, I kinda get it...fans of some bands turn me off to the bands themselves, so I understand the external influence being a factor. But instead of using critics as a red herring, come at Frank Ocean (or whoever) directly.

I just like his voice/beats. Big deal. I don't think about the larger landscape of real/fake r&b when I'm listening to him.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:10 (fourteen years ago)

"Novacane" is the one I voted for, too.

Chaka Collar, lemme rock you (DJP), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:10 (fourteen years ago)

now Novacane, that is anything but an unremarkable song

skip, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:12 (fourteen years ago)

Thinking About You is the one Frank Ocean song I like.

SOPA/PILLA (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:12 (fourteen years ago)

i like this song and "novacane" but not crazy about either of them

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:13 (fourteen years ago)

"Swim Good" has an appealing smoothness: doesn't seem unbearably angsty nor does it seem exceptionally hooky

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:13 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, I wouldn't have voted "Swim Good" if I'd heard it before now but it lies pretty directly in my comfort zone (and tbh, I just like dude's voice).

oh well initially i listened to the album and thought it was completely unremarkable as skip says - no reason to listen to or think about it again, would've just gone on to the pile of listened-once-forgot-about-forever albums were it not for critics/blogs/whoever rallying around him and suddenly making him a *thing*

i don't think he's terrible like the weeknd but i do think his songwriting is really basic and his voice seems kinda weak to me, not emotionally compelling anyway. i loved the song he wrote for beyoncé but that just illustrated that his material needs a really strong performer

tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:14 (fourteen years ago)

there was one song on the album i did like more than the others but i can't remember which one. not "novacane"

tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

There's a world of difference between saying 'I'm not into this' or 'I dislike this because...' and 'who the fuck voted for this bollocks?'

This was pretty much my point. I'm all for "this is such a weak beat" or "I really don't like his voice" type stuff.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

I think both "Novacane" and the hook singing he does on "No Church For The Wild" (another song from my ballot) are strong performances.

Chaka Collar, lemme rock you (DJP), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

every time i listen to frank ocean i say "oh i should listen to this guy more" and then i completely forget about it.

me 100%

aside from "thinking about you", "songs for women" and the one that samples "strawberry swing" are the best ones

i have no problem w/ lex's criticisms of him tho

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:17 (fourteen years ago)

^ i can't remember who played this in outloud the first time, but i thought it was amazing then and i like it probably even more now. wish i'd remembered to vote for it.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:18 (fourteen years ago)

oh this john talabot remix is very good. didn't think it was as great as "families" but very good nonetheless

tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:18 (fourteen years ago)

yes! love cheaters remix

Dan S, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:18 (fourteen years ago)

HEY THERE!

didn't vote for 'Cheaters', but I totally dig it

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

every time i listen to frank ocean i say "oh i should listen to this guy more" and then i completely forget about it.

lol this is also how i am w/ his music

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

that is why he is a critical darling rather than a hit artist, lol

Chaka Collar, lemme rock you (DJP), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

my favorite John Talabot remix this year though is of Mario & Vidis'
"Changed"

Dan S, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

ILM hipster house crew making their presence felt...

Angrrau Birds (seandalai), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

Anyway, this is great; thinking I should have voted for it

Angrrau Birds (seandalai), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:21 (fourteen years ago)

now this is an amazing track.

skip, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:21 (fourteen years ago)

this is a nice track

Chaka Collar, lemme rock you (DJP), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:21 (fourteen years ago)

Oh amazing, so didn't expect that to place, Talabot's finest hour and way better than the original.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:21 (fourteen years ago)

i think if i'd heard "cheaters" in a club it could've been an amazing moment that would've pushed it up to LOVE for me but it avoided me - i'm not pleased about that ;_;

tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

This was top five for me, glorious stuff.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

man the last time I was in a club... okay was last year at M.I.A./Rye Rye

I miss dancing ;_;

Chaka Collar, lemme rock you (DJP), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

i like this a lot

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

relistening and it is pretty fantastic huh

I AM GOING RAVING MORE IN 2012 i will not be cheated out of these moments by "injury" or "work" or "tiredness"

tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:25 (fourteen years ago)

i need to listen to "cheaters" again, i feel like i should've liked it a lot, but iirc it kinda left me cold

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:25 (fourteen years ago)

wow so that was great

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:25 (fourteen years ago)

frank ocean crit love = turns out that when r&b's made by a miserabilist faux-profound dude in his bedroom SUDDENLY critics are all over it

― tinie tempurah (lex pretend)

Critics do seem to love other kinds of R&B too though, for example Pitchfork seems to throw in a few R&B albums in their lists each year which have recently included The-Dream, Erykah Badu and this year Beyonce, you know albums you love. I'm no Frank Ocean fan, but your reason for disliking him seems strange. It's the same way you hate Robyn because she's the pop act a lot of indie kids like.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

really happy danny daze placed, i voted for "down her", though

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

wonder if this is a track that only makes sense if you've ever stepped foot in a club. i haven't and as such it just seems pleasant.

pandemic, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

I can definitely appreciate it outside the context of a night clubbing.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:27 (fourteen years ago)

fair enough

pandemic, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:28 (fourteen years ago)

yeah this is good

ciderpress, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:28 (fourteen years ago)

btw, I'm not much of a clubber. In my club days, I was the guy sitting at the table watching sweaters and purses of all the girls I'd come with as they danced.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:29 (fourteen years ago)

i'll have to try it again cause my reaction was same as pandemic's

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:29 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i don't dance much but i still enjoy listening to dance music, i don't think it's a club-only thing at all

i was wondering which katy b tracks would place - i voted for the album, no tracks, but i could imagine many of them placing

tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:32 (fourteen years ago)

such a corny song

ciderpress, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:32 (fourteen years ago)

standing in the bar with my friend olivia is one of my favourite lines practically ever

pandemic, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:33 (fourteen years ago)

nice! I'm afraid Katy suffered from vote splitting, though :/
