'Mindkilla' is the first song in this countdown I really like since Quik, and yet, seeing it here makes me die inside a bit

(bcz 'Adult Goth' was my #1 pick)

xp, Mountains by Mary Timony is very good. I did rather like Helium's Dungeons & Dragons period and it's not a million miles away from that.

I def think I'm gonna check out some Mary Timony solo stuff; The Magic City is a rad record!

I think if they play London any time soon, I'll go. Festival was alright, but they were on a bit of a weird stage and I reckon they'd put on a much more interesting show at a gig.

"mindkilla" is superb - the interpolation of "mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird" works so well - love the distortion on her voice there

GGD are amazing live, i saw them at xoyo last year and it was superb

Also - I nearly jumped for joy when I found I could understand the sample of Chinese High is saying "Good Morning!" (teaching myself Mandarin Chinese since Christmas, slowly but surely)

GGD and Battles albums were both disappointing follow-ups for me, but Mindkilla and Ice Cream were the best songs off each imo. Didn't vote for either, have scored zilch so far.

GGD aside, these are not the indie songs I was hoping for. Go Team is probably my favorite of the bunch, but still seems slight

fucking love this song, was very very high in my ballot - one of my dead certs. the counterpoint melody! the vertiginous drops! the autumnal male diva! this is everything i ever want from dance music.

yeah that's amazing - half the length though

although I don't understand where you're getting "counterpoint melody" from, lex; in fact the melody is kind of the exact opposite of counterpoint in how 90% of it follows exactly the notes and rhythm of the baseline

also Lex is very OTM about all these melodic lines being intertwined (a better term...?) here, the "wordless vocal hook" coming surfacing out of nowhere rules hard

oh okay! tbh "melody" threw me there, I was expecting to hear something more fugue-like with sustained interlocking musical lines going along (kind of, um, like what the tune-yards stuff does)
